Lincolnshire / Lincoln electoral register
« on: Saturday 09 October 21 11:11 BST (UK)  »
I’m interested in the Swanpool Garden Suburb (just off Skellingthorpe Road, Lincoln).  It came under Tritton ward in the 1990s.  Prior to that it came under Foss ward.

I can’t find the addresses from 1936 and earlier, though.

Does anyone know which ward it would have come under?  The houses were built around 1919.

Thanks

Channel Islands Resources & Offers / 1870 birth - Jersey
« on: Sunday 22 September 19 10:02 BST (UK)  »
I’m on holiday in Jersey this week.  It’s triggered me to look into a 3 x great aunt who was born here.  She’s the only family member with a channel island connection.

The 1881 census shows she was living in Lincoln with Henry and Catherine Hughes (presumably both her parents).  She was 11 and a scholar.

I’ve checked Jerripedia and I can’t spot a birth or baptism for her.

I’ve no idea how her parents came to be there.  Going by the birth locations for siblings, they weren’t there long.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

England / Pneumonia, 1924
« on: Tuesday 04 June 19 15:17 BST (UK)  »
My great grandfather is said to have died of pneumonia after standing in the rain at a football match.  He was 50 and he died on 16 Jan 1924, aged 50.  He was Thomas Hunter.

I'm not aware of him having any health problems before then (admittedly, I know very little about him).  He was a sheet metal worker in 1911.

Any thoughts on:
a) is it possible to be vulnerable to pneumonia as a result of being wet and cold?
b) is it more likely to be linked to being in a crowd of people (and the rain was a coincidence)?
c) how long did people take to die of pneumonia, at that time?
d) I've spotted two matches where it was noted it was raining, 01/01/1924 & 12/01/1924.  Is there a good resource anyone can recommend for checking the weather.

Thanks

Lincolnshire / Jessie Stimpson - was she in a home from childhood onwards?
« on: Monday 25 February 19 13:02 GMT (UK)  »
Her birth was registered 1/4 ending June 1921.  I can't find any other record for her.

I'm told that one of the siblings was in a "Big Hospital" in Yorkshire and that her mother and eldest sister would go to visit.  I suspect it may have been her as I'm struggling to find info to the contrary.

My source thought it was a daughter that went into "care" but didn't know if it was because they were disabled or just unwanted.  Parents went on to have 7 more children (both girls and boys) so unwanted only seems likely if her mother had some sort of health crisis around that time.  (There were 4 siblings at the time of her birth; aged 2 to 7.)

If a disabled baby was born in Gainsborough, which institutions would likely to be used in the 1920s?

Wouldn't occupants of residential homes be listed on the 1939 Register?

Any thoughts welcomed.

Thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1881 census, only one word needed
« on: Monday 31 December 18 14:36 GMT (UK)  »
Sorry, I tried to do an attachment but the file is too large.  I don't know how to reduce it on an iPad.

1881 census.  John Burr of Washingborough.  His name is on the tenth line down.  He's followed by his wife, Mary, and son, Charles.  His granddaughter Eliza is the entry I'm interested in.  What's the word after "Eliza"?

(I've not yet tracked down which of his children Eliza belonged to.  My Ancestry subscription has lapsed so that bit will need to wait for now.)

I've been looking for any connection between an acquired aunt.  It turns out she was probably a blood relative.

(In case it helps, citation is RG11/3236/40 p 17)

Thanks

Lincolnshire / memory tricks
« on: Monday 26 November 18 09:23 GMT (UK)  »
I know our memories can play tricks on us so I'm checking for evidence to back up a relative's recollections.

These particular memories relate to World War 2 and Lincoln.

Was there a convalescent home for servicemen in Lincoln?

Was there a munitions' factory in Lincoln?  (I've only found reference to 20 around the country and none are close to Lincoln.)

Were there any incidents that led to a group of schoolgirls being killed (10+, due to a bomb dropping?).

I've been trawling through the newspaper archives and haven't found anything that fits in with the recollection.

Thanks

Census and Resource Discussion / British Newspaper Archive - tips sought
« on: Wednesday 24 October 18 21:37 BST (UK)  »
I have read the tips on the website itself.

Can anyone here suggest where I'm going wrong?

Specific example, Lincolnshire Echo on 16/10/1944 had a family notice saying, "Hughes. -Walter, reported killed in action during September, the dearly loved nephew of Mr and Mrs Allen, 38 John Street,"

I discovered it as I searched under "38 John Street".  When I look up under "Walter" and "Hughes" it doesn't trace this item.

This might be the reason I'm not finding death notices for other people.  I just can't spot where I might be going wrong.  Even if I leave all the trace options open (all areas and all article types) it only brings up the death notice when I input the address.

Any ideas?

(As an aside, putting in the address has brought up the odd interesting advert for eras prior to popular phone ownership.)

Thanks

Hertfordshire / Herts electoral roll
« on: Friday 12 October 18 22:39 BST (UK)  »
I’ve been struggling to find a date of death for my great grandfather (only recently discovered who he was).

I know he was alive in 1954 as he appeared on the Islington electoral roll.  He was living with his wife.

I’ve found no record after this.  His wife died in 1960 and her death was registered in St Albans.  I wonder if they moved to Herts, if she moved to Herts following his death, or perhaps it’s a wild goose chase.

They were both born in 1892.  She was born Mildred Violet Dorothy Barnes.  He was Francis James Hughes.  (They married on 24/03/1913.)

From the Herts website it appears you have to go in person to check their electoral roll.

Is anyone going there?  Would they mind checking for either of them?  If there’s any trace I’d like to know the address(es) and who else was at the same address.

(I’ve used various key phrases to check the British newspapers to try to get a lead.  I’ve not found any trace of a grave or death for him.  No trace in probate records either.)

Any other ideas welcome.

Thanks

I discovered recently that my great grandfather was Francis James Hughes.  Using various sites (including newspaper records and a military site) I've not been able to track his death down.  In fact, all I seem to find is details relating to people connected to him rather than about him himself.  No hints ever flagged up on ancestry.co.uk either.  When he was 17 he was an iron turner.  Family history suggests he was known as Frank.

What I know - he was born Apr-Jun 1892 in Lincoln.
He had a son in 1909 but didn't marry the mother (Margaret Rossington).

I believe he married Mildred Violet Barnes Jan-Mar 1913 in Leeds.  She was born Oct-Dec 1892 and died in St Albans Oct-Dec 1960.

They had a son, Walter James Hughes in Leeds (Holbeck) 1915 and he died in Italy in 1944 (an obituary from his aunt and uncle confirmed this connection).  Walter was married to Eva Alice Course.

There also appears to be another son, Norman Hughes who was born and died Apr-Jun 1918 registered in Holbeck.

Any suggestions for me?

Thanks
