Kent / Teynham, birthplace of my father, Albert James Baker, 1904
« on: Saturday 01 December 18 18:14 GMT (UK)  »
My post/subject focuses on Teynham and "World's End," the location where my father, Albert James Baker, was born in 1904.

I have a 1938 newspaper ad (William Willett Ltd.) describing a "XVIth Century Cottage Residence," in "Kent, World's End, Teynham" (photo attached). I would like to find out if my grandparents, Albert William and Frances Elizabeth (Pilcher) Baker, lived in that house, as boarders or tenants, from approximately Feb 1903 to April-June 1906. Their address, on a baptism register (William George Baker) in Feb 1903 was Lucerne Street, Teynham, but no house number.

In the NO-census year of 1904, is it possible to find house numbers and the names of the occupants of the houses on World’s End? Are there deed records, tax records, post office records, or any other type of documentation that may reveal occupants names.

On the Google map of Teynham, I see a short road off of Lewson (formerly Lucerne) named World's End leading to a "Y" and the left fork changes to a farm lane. On the ground view the Google camera van does not travel down World's End from Lewson, and I cannot zoom in enough on the aerial view to examine certain features. I was looking for that massive chimney which may have remained on the house (if it exists at all) over the decades of restoration, renovation and modification.

For those reading this request who live in Teynham:
Does "World's End" refer specifically to that road or street that I see on the maps or  does it encompass part of Lucerne Street too? Do you have ancestors who lived at either place? Do you know the history of The Plough Inn, Lucerne Street, World's End, and the residence in the photo, from available archives of the area or from your family history? My grandfather worked on a farm, probably close to that house in the photo. I saw on the Google aerial map farmland (crops) on either side of that farm lane extending from World's End. Did that same farmland exist back in 1900-1906 and were there dairy farms in the area?

Canada Lookup Request / Descendants of James Copeland Elliott
« on: Friday 16 February 18 21:08 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find someone in the McCrea, Tummons, Quinn or Chase families (there are no Elliotts as he had no sons), or their descendants, who, through their family histories, might know the circumstances by which my grandfather, Albert W. Baker, an immigrant arriving in Toronto in 1904 to be placed at a farm in the provinces by the Farm Labor Bureau, was sent directly to Mr. Elliott’s farm in Tweed.
I would most gratefully appreciate a response.

(Note: I posted a similar request in mid-2017 but I had no descendants names. I think it is time to try again.)

Canada / Albert W. Baker -- James Elliott connection 1904
« on: Friday 30 June 17 15:38 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find descendants of the James C Elliott family, Canada, 1911 Census, Tweed, Ontario. Family members were wife Elizabeth, daughters Emma and Ida, and step-daughter Ethel Finley. My grandfather, Albert W. Baker, was an immigrant who left Kent, England in 1904 aboard the SS Lake Champlain. From POA Montreal, he went to Toronto and from there he ended up at the farm of James Elliott. While I am still around I would like to how that happened. What process or system did the Farm Labor Bureau use to select my grandfather and send him straight to the Elliott farm?
Maybe there are living descendants, who through family history passed down through the generations, know the circumstances of how my grandfather arrived at the Elliott farm.

Kent Lookup Requests / Grandparents in 1901
« on: Thursday 28 July 16 15:10 BST (UK)  »
I would  like to know census status of grandparents in Kent in 1901 before their marriage in Bromley in 1902.
Albert William Baker b.1873 or 1874 (born in Milstead I believe) and,
Frances Elizabeth Pilcher b.1875
(They were both living in Bromley at the time of their marriage March 29, 1902. My grandmother may have already been living there.)
Thank you, Ken Baker

Canada / Grandfather association with Salvation Army - Albert W. Baker
« on: Thursday 16 June 16 17:44 BST (UK)  »
First time here. Looks overwhelming.
My granddaughter is doing some Baker genealogy research. She has brought up something about my grandfather that I have never known and I would like to get the answer while I am still around.
My grandfather Albert W. Baker was 30 years old when he departed Liverpool on August 2 1904 on the SS Lake Champlain and arrived at Montreal on August 12; his final destination was Tweed, Ontario.
I don't know why he left Kent County and a wife and two small boys to start a new life in Canada. Did he turn to the Salvation Army for help and be accepted into the Hadleigh farm colony and then be selected by some type of evaluation process for the overseas colony in Canada? He went from Montreal, via Toronto maybe, to the farm of Mr. and Mrs. James Elliott in Tweed. Was that arranged by the Salvation Army and Mr.  Elliott?
And then two years later his wife Frances (Pilcher) Baker and sons William G. and Albert J. (my father) departed on the SS Virginian in
April 1906 and after arriving at Montreal, joined Albert W. in Tweed.
I sent an email to jove dot carew (at) sympatico.ca over a month ago (I found via Google Salvation Army that Col. Carew is director of an Archives Department and his address is Toronto, so that was my first hope). I have not received a reply. It might be an email provider malfunction. Of three emails to him, I received "invalid recipient" on two of them.
Through surfing I found this website and decided to send this request and will wait and see what happens.
Would appreciate any help.  Thank you,  Ken
(Hope I get an email notice if there is a reply. I might not find my way
back to this site--but I do have it saved in my notes)
   Notes/Reference: Marriage: Albert W. Baker (30), Frances Pilcher (28)
