Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Cause of Death: Catherine Tucker
« on: Saturday 06 February 21 12:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I've come across a death record for my great-great-aunt, Catherine Tucker. I'm struggling a bit with the cause of death. ". . . . . Convulsions 4 days certified."

I think it could 'uremic' or 'uremia' but as on other words on this sheet, they don't always dot the i's. The start of the word is very similar to the start of 'spinster' but I'm still none the wiser.

I hope the genius of rootschat might shed some light on this for me.

Waterford / Dispensation granted for marraige
« on: Friday 17 January 20 13:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have a marriage between Michael Walsh and Mary Walsh in Waterford 25th July 1857 in St. John's Parish. The record mentions that a dispensation was given by Rev D OBrien.

I'm curious why a dispensation would be needed. Given they have the same name I had wondered if perhaps they were cousins? The only other thing I can think of is if one of them was Catholic and the other wasn't.

Any ideas? It's the first time I've seen this on any of records.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Who's the Mammy?
« on: Tuesday 19 November 19 13:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Hopefully you can guys have better luck with this than I did.

My 3 times great grandmother Eliza Loughlin married Edward Connolly 10th October 1874. Her civil record gives her fathers name as James Loughlin and living at 25 Nicolas Street. When I looked to the parish record to find her mothers name the fun began.

It looks the scan of the page wasn't very clear and the image is a little unfocused. To make it worse don't think the handwriting is all that clear anyway.

I think the mothers name is Bridget. . . Dwyer's? . . . Sayer?. . .  xxxyer?

I can't go any further back until I have her name. Admittedly, these are Famine generation reletives so there probably isn't much to find. . .

Any and all guesses welcome

Dublin / Registrars Office Archives
« on: Wednesday 30 October 19 14:00 GMT (UK)  »
I have an ancestor who married in a Dublin registrars office 28th December 1885. The image I found on Irishgenealogy.ie isn't very clear so I'm unsure of details like the occupations. I think they say coachman or something similar.

Would records from the registrars office show any further details? Irishgenealogy.ie just shows the registry entry.

The reason I'm asking is that my ancestor John Edney had two daughters called Margaret. Margaret born 31 Dec 1859 and Margaret Mary born 11 may 1863. I'm not sure which Margaret is the bride in this marriage. Marrying in a registrars office would mean it's unlikely there was a parish marriage that would have shown the mother, clearing this up. Even if there was a blessing ther most likely isn't a record of it.

Dublin / La na mBan Pledge
« on: Tuesday 29 October 19 18:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I've been doing some research around the conscription crisis in 1918. My 3x great uncle died in France 9th June 1918 - La na mBan back home. I know the march happened in Dublin with women signing the pledge against conscription and back filling men's jobs.

My question is if any register or record survives on this. I haven't been able to find mention of the record kept for Dublin. I know it's available for other places, Kilkenny for example.

We had Cuman na mBan women in the family around this time and I wonder if they signed. It would be interesting family history.

Dublin / 4 the Coombe
« on: Wednesday 21 August 19 13:39 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

My family lived in 4/5 the Coombe from at least 1911 up to the 1940s that I have records of. My 2x great grandmother died at St. Kevins hospital and gave this as her address. We also have Guinnesses work records that confirm the address.

Does anybody know who they would have paid their rent to? A landlord isn't metioned in the census forms. I'm hoping to be able to follow the rent records, as unlikely at this is.

I'm asking because the Guinness records mention that her "aged son" was living with her at the time. Joseph was 50 when  she died in 1940 and the work pension was being paid to him while she was in  hospital. I'm hoping to confirm if and how long he stayed there after his mother's death. I haven't found his death record yet but I haven't had the chance to properly look.

His 39 year old brother married  Mary Byrne who was under 21 in 1935 and would most likely have moved out of the single room the family had at 4 the Coombe.

Unfortunately theres nobody alive in my family who would have remembered these relations.

On a side note, does anybody know when the houses in that area would have been privately owned? The house doesn't have a folio on the property register.

Tipperary / Michael Walsh And Mystery Of The Census Returns
« on: Tuesday 07 May 19 21:25 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm hoping I can rely on the boundless wisdom that is Rootschat.

My great-great-grandfather was a Private in the British Army. He enlisted with the 18th Royal Irish between 26th April 1897 and 20th April 1898 (between his marriage to Margaret Carey at Waterford and the birth the birth of his first child). This would have been just before the outbreak of the second boer war. I dont whether he was with the 1st of 2nd battalion. 1st would have sent him to South Africa and the 2nd to India via Malta.

1901:
I can't find the family in the 1901 census, ostensibly because he was stationed abroad. Would his family have been with him? I presume (always dangerous in family history!) that the army would have recorded these people even though they weren't at home? Can this be accessed?

1911:
In 1911 theres another odd one for me (read:headache). There is a census showing Margaret living with her two youngest children. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Tipperary/Clonmel_East_Urban/River_Street/817463/. A note on the census form says that Michael, head of the family is enumerated on form H, which I believe is a barracks return form. Naturally, I can't find this! I believe the 18th Royal Irish were stationed at Clonmel in 1911.

The census says they have 6 children living of 7. I found the below records:

James 20th April 1898 Waterford, Waterford
William 19th October 1903 ( my great grandad) Fermoy, Cork
Margaret Christina 24th December 1905 Fermoy, Cork
Mary 1st January 1907 Buttevant, Cork
Alice 10th May 1910 Clonmel, Tipperary

I dont know where the three eldest are in 1911 or where there other children are. With the gap between James and William I imagine theres a missing child in there, possibly born abroad? Sadly when William ended up in Dublin ( oh, the family scandal!) the family lost contact with this branch of the family.

Sorry for the block of text. If sombeody can point me in the right direction on any of the above I'd really appreciate it.

Cork / John Walsh - Suicide - Burial Records
« on: Monday 18 March 19 12:18 GMT (UK)  »
This might be a sensitive subject for some, but I’m hoping somebody can point me in the right direction.

September 9th 1898 my 3rd great uncle (by marriage) ended his own life on his farm near Millstreet, Cork. Sadly, there was even a small write up about it in the Cork Examiner. He was a widower with two young girls who ended up living with his parents-in-law. I have the administration papers from his estate dated 1903 where the grandparents had to be recognised as the girl's legal guardians to request administration on their behalf. His daughters were Bridget (15 – in 1903) and Mary (13 in 1903).

I’m planning a trip to Cork to visit a few of the family graves. I have records of certain family members being buried in Kiskeam cemetery but I’ve been unable to find any burial record for John.

Seeing as he died by suicide would they still have been so strict on Catholic teaching at the time that he wouldn’t have been buried on consecrated ground? It’s possible that the burial records have just been lost. As it is I’m still trying to trace his wife’s death so I’ve no idea where she’s buried that might help narrow it down.

Thanks in advance

Dublin / Searching for Will or Papers of Administration for Joseph Isaac Tucker
« on: Friday 23 November 18 08:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hopefully somebody can point me in the right direction.

I'm looking for a will or papers of Administration for Joseph Isaac Tucker who died a widower in Dublin in 1953. Considering the year he died I know I won't find Revenue papers for CGT like I did for his son. You can easily find his sons records by searching his name on the National Archives website but no such luck for Joseph Isaac.

I have no idea if he had a Will or not but I assume there would have been papers of Administration for him if he didn't. Far as I know he had a "spinster" daughter living with him when he died but I don't know if he had much of an estate to be administered beyond maybe a bank account. I've tried going through the calendar of grants on CIGO.ie but can't find anything. Its also a bit of a pain having to scroll down over 500 pages of dead text in each file.

Considering I really only have his date of death and full name is it possible to find out if he even had a will (or admin papers drawn up after the fact)? He died the same year the daughter living with him bought a house in Sandymount so we had speculated that perhaps she bought it with some inheritance.
