Midlothian / Tolmie/Porteous Dalkeith
« on: Sunday 24 June 18 23:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I've found a branch of my Irish family originally came from Dalkeith.

I found Henry Tolmie in the 1841 census with his father William, brother William and mother Jean. His mother is Jean Porteous. Her parents (as far as I can work out) are James Porteous and Isabel Cummings. Henry's grandparents on his father's side (again as far as I can work out) are John Tolmie and Elizabeth Canker.

From his first marriage to Ann Maxwell (1852) they had one child Christina. Ann died at some point before 1861, when Christina is found living with Henry's brother William.

Christina married William Warrington circa 1893/4 in Edinburgh. They had (an illegitimate) daughter Christina in 1893. Christina (sr) and William both died in the first couple of years of 1900's. Christina Warrington then married Jame Crichton a miner from Dalkeith. I think Christine Crichton died in 1974.

So, I've found a fair bit although some of it, especially the older links, aren't 100% certain.

I was just hoping somebody might have a few extra sources for the Tolmie or Porteous families working back, or even the Crichtons.

Thanks in advance,

Paul

Lancashire / Patrick & Bridget Toole 39 Woodland Rd, Seaforth, Liverpool
« on: Tuesday 25 July 17 21:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm trying to track the next step of Bridget Toole, any additional info on Patrick, or anything on their 3 children.

Patrick died in April 1916 in WW1 (Royal Dublin Fusiliers). We know he's buried at Bois-Carre Military Cemetery, Haisnes. The 'Find a Grave' info gives Bridget's address as 39 Woodland Rd.

I am trying to track down whether this was a temporary during the war, or a more permanent address for the family. I'm unsure if they stayed in Liverpool or move on.

His death widowed Bridget for the second time before the age of 30. She was born Doonan in Drogheda Ireland, before moving to Bray, Co Wicklow. Her first husband died of TB 2 years into the marriage ( a couple of weeks after the birth of their son). She remarried Patrick Toole, and they had three children,  James,Michael and Selina.

Any tips how to progress - where to look - would be brilliant.

Thanks in advance

Paul

Wicklow / Ellis, Hughes or Graydon familes, Newtown, Roundwood Newcastle
« on: Wednesday 03 August 16 23:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I've hit a bit of a brick wall with regards to a couple of family threads, and was wondering if anyone can help.

My great grandfather is John Hughes, found in Knockraheen in Co Wicklow in the 1901 census. I have his marriage to Ellen Graydon in 1905. His father is James. I've different dates for his year of birth through his marriage cert, 2 censuses, his death cert and his gravestone. Each giving a different age and adding to the general confusion finding his birth cert.

Ellen was born in 1887 to Robert Graydon and Bridget Ellis, and are also from around the Knockraheen area. She seems to be a servant in someone's house in 1901. Robert and Bridget married in 1883 in Newtownmountkennedy. Robert's father is Richard, and Bridget's Andrew.

I found a baptism in Kilquade for a Robert with a father Richard (and mother Marie Anne Warlock who I also can't find anything more about despite the name) in 1845. I suspect Robert and or Bridget are dead by 1901.

I can't find a Bridget Ellis born to Andrew Ellis. I found an Andrew that goes by Edward somewhere, and I can't for the life of my find that link again. If Edward is correct I think I have that line, Bridget would be born in 1856 to Edward Ellis and Bridget Kavanagh...but its all guess work, and dodgy reasoning.

So, really I'm struggling to get past these blocks. I can't be certain of John Hughes' birthdate therefore can't find his mother's maiden name. Can't find the Graydons. And can't find Andrew Ellis.

Any help would be gratefully received
