Leitrim / Who is my McDermott grandfather??
« on: Saturday 01 October 16 22:05 BST (UK)  »
My family name is McDermott, or I thought it was!   ???

Up until very recently, my Irish family tree stopped at my grandfather, Thomas McDermott, born 1888, Carrick on Shannon, illegitmate son of Bridget.  I could find nothing more. His birth was apparently not registered.    But now Irish bmds are online and after a great deal of faff, I found Thomas's birth.  His name wasn't McDermott at all, but Keegan.  Well that came as a bit of a shock!

I can only think that he was baptised McDermott, presumably that being the name of his biological father.   I have spent forever trying and failing to find his baptism.

I accept that there's not much anyone can do to help, but I would appreciate some thoughts on this.

Was it normal for a child to be baptised away from where he was born, and where his family were living?
In order to be given the father's name, would that father have to have been present at the baptism of an illegitimate child in 1888?
Wouldn't it have been very socially unacceptable for the mother to then marry someone else, i.e. NOT the father of that child?   (Which his mother did!)
Why give the child the father's name if she wasn't going to marry him?  In the context of the family, it only makes his illegitimacy even more obvious.

I am beyond confused.
Thanks for listening .........!  ;)

Leitrim / McDermott - Carrick on Shannon
« on: Saturday 31 January 09 11:30 GMT (UK)  »
After 5 years of searching,  I have at last found a few details about my paternal grandparents!
It's a bit complicated, please bear with me.

Starting from the top:
Margaret McDermott (married name) born 1833 Sligo, was widowed and remarried William Gallagher, born 1830 Sligo; a glazier in Carrick on Shannon in 1901.

Margaret's daughter Bridget McDermott, born 1873,  had an illegitimate son, Thomas McDermott - born Boyle, Roscommon in 1889, (birth unfortunately not registered)

Bridget McDermott married (I believe in Carrick) to a man with surname Delaney and went on to have several more children.

Thomas McDermott  married Mary Ann O'Hara, born 1886, Longford.

Thomas McDermott (who for many years was in Connaught Rangers)  and Mary Ann spent all their married life in Carrick on Shannon, where the family was very well known,  especially their eldest son Tommy, who drove a mule and cart through the town until his death around 1968.

Does any of this ring any bells with anyone?
Many thanks.

Wiltshire / Swanborough-BROWN-SHEPPARD
« on: Saturday 15 March 08 12:42 GMT (UK)  »
Does this family ring any bells with anyone??

Matilda Brown, born 1822 Chippenham, Wilts married William Sheppard born 1817, Bath..   They married and lived in Bath.

In 1851, they have a "cousin" with them, Eliza Swanborough born 1830, Woodborough, Wilts.  Eliza was daughter of William and Sarah; Sarah born in Beechingstoke.

I cannot work out how Eliza is related to this Sheppard/Brown family!  As Eliza is my only clue to knocking down this particular Brick Wall, I would dearly love to know!   There are a number of Swanborough's in Bath, and an equal number of Brown's around Woodborough!

The only other info I have is that William Sheppard's father was also William, dead before 1841,  while Matilda Brown's parents were John and Mary Ann.  John was dead before 1841; Mary Ann was dead before 1851 and was born c 1796 "out of county" from Somerset.

Many thanks.

Hertfordshire / RANDALL, Hertfordshire/Surrey
« on: Saturday 31 December 05 13:12 GMT (UK)  »
I have three generations of Randalls in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey. My great grandfather was George Randall born 1868, Kingston upon Thames, and his father was another George Randall, born 1845, Kingston upon Thames.
But I've come to a complete standstill with HIS father - Charles Randall - born c 1794 in St. Albans.  All I know of him is that he was a Confectioner and he married Mary Hone of Merton.  I cannot seem to find a lead to any other members of his family.
Can anyone help?
Many thanks :)
