Monmouthshire / Looking for the name RELIUS or aurelius
« on: Tuesday 04 June 19 09:22 BST (UK)  »
Searching the family name of AURELIUS, based in and around Mynyddislwyn (near Cwmfelinfach, Ynysddu, Pontllanfraith)..and there's a name change around the early 1700's to RELIUS from AURELIUS.
I have a marriage recorded to one HARRY AURELIUS, (which checks out) but the baptisms of his children have him as Harry RELIUS.
He signed the marriage register with a cross, so was not able to write his name (I assume) or his wife.
I wonder if the clerk/ cleric recording the baptisms might have heard Harry Aurelius as Harry Relius?
As the name Harry can "run in" to the surname as it starts with a vowel? If Harry dropped his aitches (as all good Welsh people do on occasion, as do I!) it would have been given as 'Arry (A)urelius...possibly??? If there is anyone out there with the name RELIUS, or similar, please give me a shout. Many thanks
PS - Later Aurelius recorded as living at TERFIL, GELLIGAER as well. It's prior to 1700 that I am now trying to find.

Family History Beginners Board / Millenium File
« on: Monday 14 November 16 20:40 GMT (UK)  »
I have come across the MILLENNIUM FILE on Ancestry......I have read the blurb written about it  but again I want to know how it is viewed with regards to its authenticity.
Again.....can original data be viewed (as ever only text copied over from the transcript and no original can be seen)?
As I am now in the 1500's things are a lot different to looking in the later centuries, and for some reason, I keep having a dream about Geoffrey on Monmouth and his writings of pseudo history....that might sound crazy, but I really am trying to get the facts straight, and seeing page after page of transcript makes "the folks" seem very distant and rather unreal....seeing is believing I guess, and just because this has a swanky name, I want some reassurance.
I don't want to seem flippant as I can see it was created by the Institute of Family Research, but then again, it's the first time I have heard of them...this is all such a huge learning curve, so any input would be much appreciated.
And yes...I have found someone on there born in 1499, which takes me back into another century.
As ever, thanks in advance.

Family History Beginners Board / International Genealogical Index - Advice
« on: Saturday 12 November 16 16:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi - I have stumbled into the realms of the IGI/ Family Search and am reading around it, as I am very new to it.
I have a few queries - can anyone help?

I notice that each person on Family Search has a unique reference number next to their name.
I also notice that when sources are cited, there is a series of references which is sometime prefixed by "ark" that appear at the end of the source citation.
Are any of these numbers related to batch or film numbers that you can input when doing a search on the IGI database? If not, how does one know what these batch / film numbers are>
Finally, does anyone have any tips or guidance on how to use the IGI, and/ or have any opinions about it?
The Wiki on it says to always check the original source, but to a newbie like me, it's a bit of a chicken and egg situation - I am working off information given to me by a third party and trying to check it out as I go, and I am in the early 1500's now.
If any of this makes sense, I would appreciate any pointers at all on using this search facility .
Thanks in advance.

Family History Beginners Board / Using Family Search - Incorrect Duplicate Entries.
« on: Sunday 06 November 16 11:09 GMT (UK)  »
I am using Family Search, amongst other sites to help with my research.
They ask you to put a few relatives in (which I did) but then one family member "linked" to a whole dynasty of others, going back to the 15th century, none of which are in fact my relatives.
Has anyone else had this experience?
I have entered JOHN DREW myself, and there is another one, alongside him, and effectively it's a duplicate - I had a hint that "my" John Drew might be a duplicate, and I verified him by some records, but I don't seem to be be able to erase the huge family I have suddenly acquired.
Any ideas as to what I can do?
There contact page asks for a phone number which I don't want to give, so I am now a bit stuck.
Thanks in advance

Cornwall Lookup Requests / Flamank/ Flamock
« on: Saturday 05 November 16 18:34 GMT (UK)  »
Has anyone researching the FLAMANKS OF BOSCARNE come across alternative spellings for this name?
I have just unearthed a FLAMOCK and wondered if I should look out for any more?
I have (like us all no doubt) seen various spellings and possible transcription errors before, but this one has taken me all day to suss out.
TIA

Cornwall Lookup Requests / Honour Beard and Honour Beere - amended spelling!
« on: Saturday 05 November 16 14:44 GMT (UK)  »
I would welcome any help with these two people in my tree.

Honour Beard - b. 24.11.1730 m. 6.11. 1751 d. 8.4.1795 - All Bodmin (Cornwall)
Honour Beere ( her mother) b abt 1695 St Ives? m 8 April 1712 b. 22 June 1732 All St. Ives (Cornwall)
Both of them were married to men called William Flamank of Boscarne father and son.
Given the similarity of names of all parties, I accept there may be errors.

I am not having much luck on the Cornwall OPC or the Cornwall Family History Society, plus a range of other sites.

Thanks in advance.

Family History Beginners Board / Bishops Transcripts?
« on: Saturday 05 November 16 10:25 GMT (UK)  »
As a newbie, I am trawling through all the new terminology - I have found a good online page for the acronyms used, as I have come across "BT ONLY" against one of my relative's marriage.
I understand it means BISHOPS TRANSCRIPTS ONLY".
What does this mean?
Can I "view" this as a record?
I was using the Cornwall Family History Society database.
Thanks in advance.

Wiltshire / Sarah Ellen WALL 1868-1902 Swindon and Highworth Workhouse
« on: Saturday 17 September 16 08:49 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace 2 children of the 6 my great grandmother had in the Swindon Workhouse.
She had 6 children in the workhouse and I have traced 4 - one is my own grandmother, another died, and then a further 2 sisters.
I have managed to trace living relatives which is fantastic, but I now want to try and find out what happened to the 2 eldest girls.
ALICE WALL b 1887
LILIAN MAUDE b. 1890.

I have traced Alice on 2 census records - both as a servant, but for two different people, the last of which was living in a church owned property, so there may be a chance of further investigation.
Lilian Maude is almost invisible.
If anyone has any info on these people, or in fact has them in their tree, please do contact me.
I visited the Swindon History Centre last week - I found info on Ida May ( my grandmother) and her two siblings, Walter William Wall and Mary Lilian but was a little limited for time.
I intend to go back and see if the older records (big age difference) hold info about either of the two elder girls.
So, if anyone has any info, that would be wonderful.

Cornwall / Dennis FLAMANK
« on: Thursday 15 September 16 15:56 BST (UK)  »
Looking for any info on this lady - she is a link between my recent family and my much older family line based in Cornwall.
I have seen some posts for FLAMANK, but a lot of them are quite outdated now.
Thanks in advance.
