Longford / William Johnston excise man
« on: Monday 25 July 22 18:27 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out about William and his wife Jane. The excise records are in England and are not on line, so I was wondering if anyone knows anything about these two. They were Protestant, and their daughter Alice, born c. 1819, immigrated to Australia. We have found a birth record for her brother William. I would presume William and Jane are born c. 1790. One of them has strong ties to the Stephens and Laheys of Cavan. My mtdna is H5a1, if that helps, as Jane is in my direct female line. Any help would be appreciated.

Fife / William Beveridge born to David Beveridge and Isobel Muir 1691
« on: Tuesday 31 July 18 23:27 BST (UK)  »
I have seen two different strands going back to this William, and I am wondering if any one knows for sure which is the correct one?
One has William marrying Janet Beveridge and having at least John in 1714 in Dysart.
The other has William marrying Isobel Orak and having at least George in 1713 in Fife.
Both marriages were in Falkland. One in 1708 to Isobel, and the other in 1711 to Janet. For both, he would have been quite young.
The only other one in Fife is to Margaret Lochart in 1719, in Dalgetty.

Clackmannanshire / William Snadon and Janet Edie
« on: Friday 20 July 18 19:49 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to solve the puzzle of who my grandfather's biological parents were. We know through DNA that his mother lied when registering his birth, when she said he was the son of her and her husband. He was born in 1875 at 9 Tarbert Street, Glasgow. It was a tennement, and I have studied the families that were living there in 1871.  Now my brothers and I have many DNA cousins who have Snadons in their family tree, and I can confirm that at least four go back to William and Janet, so I would assume, they are our ancestors too. We also have DNA cousins with Spowarts and Beveridges. The Spowarts are mainly from Torryburn, Fife. I know it's a really long shot, but is there anyone who traces back to William Snadon and Janet Edie, with connections to these other families, and have ancestors in Glasgow around the time of my grandfather's birth? The surname Blackwood is also another not so common name that comes up. There is also a possible mormon connection. We have many DNA cousins who descend from an American couple, who have to be our 3 x great parents, and the only logical connection is through one of their sons who were in Joseph Smith's 1st 12 disciples. (We are New Zealanders with no known connections to the States.) One, Orson Pratt was on the first mission to Scotland in 1839, and was there again in 1849, so I would guess that at that time he fathered one of my grandfather's parents. I know it's looking for a needle in a haystack, but any help would be appreciated.

Armagh / Bleeks from Ardboe
« on: Tuesday 15 May 18 00:08 BST (UK)  »
I have 2 DNA cousins who trace back to Henry Bleeks a farmer born about 1800, I think from Killcolpy, and 1 who traces back to Jean Bleeks born in 1782 in Ardboe, and wondered if anyone knew how they could be connected? Jean's father could be Thomas Bleeks.  I have 2 interesting gaps in my tree, and trying to fill them in.

Derry (Londonderry) / Fleming/Ross families of Magilligan
« on: Sunday 07 January 18 22:51 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for any information on Sarah Ross and her husband John Fleming's families. They married in 1839 in Magilligan. The Flemings were from Drumavally, and the Rosses were from Ballymullholland. John Fleming's father, William, was living in Liverpool at the time of John's marriage. John at the time of his marriage was living with his uncle, Conolly Fleming. Sarah was the youngest of 6 daughters of William Ross. I would like to know who Sarah and John's mothers were. Any help would be appreciated, Jayne

Angus (Forfarshire) / James Shaw of Glen Isla
« on: Wednesday 28 December 16 20:59 GMT (UK)  »
James was born c. 1748 and married Susan Roberson, also of Glen Isla. I believe that he is the grandson of Duncan Shaw, originally of Crathienard, born 1653. I thought it might have been through Duncan's eldest son, James, as he had a son Alexander, and Alexander, according to Scotland's People, had a son named James born in Glen Isla in 1748, but in history of the Shaws it mentions Duncan's youngest son William's great grandson being of Auchinree, and that is the homestead our Shaws are from. I am hoping to find the correct link. Also I am puzzled how the history of the Shaws talks about Duncan's sons being at Culloden and how young William was there. I would think he would have had to have been at least 40 at Culloden. Are the stories mixed up with the 1715 uprising?

Midlothian / Hugh Jamieson born 1795 Newton, Midlothian
« on: Friday 09 September 16 00:27 BST (UK)  »
This is my husband's gg grandfather, but I can't find out anything about him. His daughter, Jean (Jane) Carson Jamieson married James Bruce and they immigrated to New Zealand. Hugh was married to Janet Peebles. They did have quite a few more children.
