The Lighter Side / Is Feunde a real surname?
« on: Friday 30 December 16 00:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hello again :)

I have my ancestor William Tompsett marrying an Ann "Feunde" on 4th July 1806 in Laughton, Sussex. I can't find her parents, and when I did a general Google search for her surname, nothing that related to names was returned in the results.

I'm wondering what the listed surname "Feunde" could potentially be a misspelling or corruption of?

Thank you!

The Lighter Side / Relative won't help me
« on: Wednesday 28 December 16 02:44 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to be as general as possible.

Someone posted an ad on a genealogy site (not this one) asking for information regarding someone who happens to be living and is a close relative of mine. I happily provided the poster with relevant information about me, my parents, and the person they originally enquired about. I broke down several brick walls that the poster had ran into. They said that in return they would show me their extensive family tree and help me break down some of my own brick walls.

Now they are saying that I'll have to provide them with three divorce certificates at £60 each before they'll help me or even tell me how we are related. I'm annoyed as anything about this as I told them from the off that I'm a student.

They really don't need these certificates and I know that they aren't obligated to help me but they gave me the impression that they would be happy to do so. Now I feel duped.

Sorry but felt the need to vent.

Sorry if my writing is bad. English is not my first language.

Sussex Lookup Requests / Look up request: Elizabeth GRENYER
« on: Thursday 22 December 16 18:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hello :) me again!

Elizabeth Grenyer married Richard Mills at Saint Nicholas, Brighton on February 22nd 1839. The marriage record states that her parents were called Anna Grenyer and John Gullend.

According to the census returns of 1861 and 1871 she was born in Brighton in 1818/1817.

I can't find a likely birth record for Elizabeth. I think that the name Grenyer is not quite right, but I haven't found any birth records that seem to fit my Elizabeth even when I search her name with the variants option selected.

Also, I don't understand why Elizabeth would have been christened Grenyer rather than Gullend.

Sorry for my poor English. Any insight at all would be really appreciated.

Devon Lookup Requests / Which birth record is the right one?
« on: Wednesday 21 December 16 21:59 GMT (UK)  »
Nancy Atkins married Leonard Yeo Provo at Dartmouth St Saviour in 1809.

I have found a Nancy Atkins born 1790 at Dartmouth St Saviour to Thomas and Agness.

I have also found a Nancy Atkins born 1786 to George and Jane at Dartmouth St Petrox.

I have a feeling that the latter may be more like it as Nancy and Leonard named their son George.

I'd really like some opinions?

Thanks xxxxx Fleur

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Conflicting marriage records
« on: Monday 28 November 16 23:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

Frances Susan Provo was born 1860 in Dartmouth, Devon. She can be found on the 1891 census, living in Edmonton and working as someone's servant.

I have known for a long time that Frances married John Horton in the second quarter in 1891 in Totnes, Devon, under the name "Susan Provo". It says on the marriage certificate that she was a spinster and he a bachelor.

Today when doing my research I found the record of another marriage, also for the second quarter of 1891. The name is listed as Frances Susan Provo but the marriage took place in Edmonton and the there isn't a John Horton listed, but the names of two other men.

I'm really confused now! Both marriages are listed in the England & Wales, Civil Registration Marriage Index, 1837-1915.

I'll be really grateful if someone could help me shed some light on this?!

Thanks so much and sorry if my English is bad 😁
