Inverness / Donald MacIsaac - lookup
« on: Tuesday 21 January 20 15:29 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for information on a man named Donald MacIsaac. He was son of Stephen MacIsaac (c.1828-1894) and Mary MacInnes (1838-1880), born on Eriskay in 1872. He doesn't appear on any obvious death records and is the one child of their family I haven't been able to trace. I speculate he might have emigrated. If so, it'd be great to see what became of him etc. Or indeed, if he died young, it'd be good to see a death record somewhere. Thanks.

Argyllshire / Lookup request - Peter TAYLOR and Margaret TAYLOR
« on: Tuesday 21 January 20 15:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hello All,

Searching for origins for my ancestors Peter Taylor and Margaret Taylor. Margaret's maiden surname also appears as Taylor on documents for their children, death certificates and marriage certificates etc. They both appear to have lived in Argyllshire, that is in Campbeltown. Both born c.1805 or thereabouts. Their son Donald / Daniel Taylor married Euphemia Campbell in 1866, and he died in 1902. I don't have records for the lives of their other children, though they do appear on the 1841 census. I'm really just looking for definitive evidence of their own parents and origins. Perhaps some death records or marriage records. Nothing that I've found so far. Thanks.

Mayo / Shevlane Origins
« on: Friday 11 October 19 15:19 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for origins to the Shevlane family in Belmullet, Co. Mayo. Family folklore suggests French connections, perhaps with the soldiers who came over with General Jean Joseph Amable Humbert in 1798 to help the Irish in their Rebellion. On my own branch of the family, I find John Shevlane and Biddy Mills - both would have been born c.1820-1840. I descend from their son John Shevlane (1867-1954), and other children include Bridget, James and Richard. Richard is a distinctive name, and another Richard Shevlane shows up in 1900 census records, with a birth year of c.1828. I wonder if he would have been a brother to John who married Biddy Mills? Nothing on the Mills lot either. It's all quite unknown. Any help in this would be much appreciated and perhaps a list of those 1100 French soldiers would help clear up any potential French connections too?

Inverness / Godfrey/Geoffry MACDONALD - Lookup request
« on: Thursday 11 January 18 20:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hello All,

I'm trying to find the ancestry of my g-g-g-g-g-grandfather Godfrey/Geoffry MacDonald. He was born c.1763 and died sometime between 1851-1855, since he is listed on the census of 1851 but no death certificate can be found on Scotland's People. He also appears on the census of 1841. He was married to a woman named Catherine MacPherson who was born c.1777. According to one of his descendants, Bishop Roddy Wright, the family can "be traced back to the Clan Ranald, back to the Middle Ages". He was one of the last kelp makers in Uist and lived around Torlum.

His son Archibald married a woman named Christina Monk and emigrated to Canada. Their descendants are well known, and published a detailed tree on Mundia a few years ago. I am descended through his son Alexander born c.1807 and who died in 1886.

Any help would be much appreciated. The issue of going further back in time seems impenetrable but I am sure there must be Clan records somewhere.

A final point is that I noticed he has been conflated with the 8th Baron MacDonald who shares the same name and roughly the same date of birth. I think this must be an error on Mundia?

Best,

Scotland / LONG LOST Relative - (*) SHEVLIN
« on: Wednesday 27 September 17 18:54 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

I was advised to go onto RootsChat about this query. One of my relations by the name of (*) Shevlin has been out of touch with our family for decades. He was born in 1927 in Glasgow, and left the family after an argument around 1956. However, some people say they spotted him in 1997 at his brother's funeral, also in Glasgow. Furthermore, around 1995 a cousin said he was "sighted in Cork, Ireland". What I know for sure is that he was last seen 1956/1997 and went down South to England after 1956 to work with cars. I've searched 192.com and other websites but nobody is popping up. There is no death record on ScotlandsPeople either. The hope is we'll find him living, and be able to make contact. But I'm not sure where to begin. It is quite possible he changed his name - one relation claimed he was now going by the name of Edward Murphy, but this could just be speculation. It's all unclear. Any ideas, how can I find out about what happened to him?

Cheers,

Tony

Lanarkshire / William REID - LOOKUP Request
« on: Wednesday 27 September 17 16:24 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

I'm looking for details on an ancestor of mine's named William Reid. He was born c. 1771 in Glasgow and married a woman named Euphemia Marylees on the 3rd June 1797 in Old Monkland or Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. He appears on the 1841 and 1851 censuses but after that I can't find anything else out about him. His occupation was as a Handloom Cotton Weaver. This is quite interesting - in the mid 1840s this job became useless and paid very little. He'd have been one of the last people to be doing it by 1851. His wife was born on the 6th July 1778 in Boghall, Lanarkshire and died on the 05 June 1869 in ripe old age at the same place. I'm hoping to flesh out William Reid's story - i.e. find a birth and death record, but particularly work out who his parents were.

Cheers,

Tony

Renfrewshire / William CAMPBELL - LOOKUP Request
« on: Wednesday 27 September 17 16:19 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

I've been hunting for information about an ancestor named William Campbell for some time now. He was born c.1812 in Johnstone (from 1841 and 1851 census records) and married a woman named Ann Reid in Abbey Paisley on the 15th June 1839. They had many children, nine in total it would seem. Ann Reid was born on the 14th April 1811 in Boghall, Lanarkshire before passing away on the 8th September 1892 at the Govan Poorhouse sadly. However, for William I cannot find any birth or death records. My hope is to find his parents' names and push the Campbell line back further.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Tony

Kerry / Hugh CAREY and Sarah CORRIGAN - Lookup request
« on: Monday 25 September 17 01:05 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

I've been investigating my Irish ancestors lately and found a woman named Ann Carey. She married a man named Anthony Kelly and lived in Belmullet, Co. Mayo with him until he died in 1911. Thereafter, she moved to Glasgow in Scotland to be with her daughter and her family. She died in 1935 and her death certificate records her parents as Hugh Carey and Sarah Corrigan. It also lists her age as 82 years, however on Mundia I noted the same woman associated with someone born on 29th July 1848 in Killearny, Co. Kerry. I'm hoping to confirm where she was indeed born and when. Above all, I'm interested in finding details on Hugh Carey and Sarah Corrigan and any other children they may have had.

Many Thanks,

Tony

Mayo / Anthony KELLY - Belmullet LOOKUP request
« on: Monday 25 September 17 00:58 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

I have been investigating ancestors from Belmullet in Co. Mayo. There are a lot of interesting leads that are appearing. I know that my G-G Grandfather lived in a place called Mingmore/Muingmore in Belmullet with his wife Annie Kelly (maiden name Carey) and children. He died in 1911, according to records and would have been born around 1838 if the age on his death certificate is accurate. I'm looking to trace his parents, and find out what siblings he may have had.

Any ideas?

Best,

Tony
