Hi Everyone
Glad to see you are all still doing what you do best  :)
I have a couple of months off work and decided to pick up where i left off..........trying to track down some of my dead ends (excuse the pun)  :-\
Since I left our ancestors haven't increased but our descendants have, we've gone from 5 grandchildren when I left to 12 as of Dec 24th
Hopefully I can track down some of those elusive family members and shift through some possible scandals

Canada / Quck Warning!
« on: Tuesday 19 September 06 17:42 BST (UK)  »
Just recieved this forward from my hubby   :-\

I checked at snopes.com and they have this as true
http://www.snopes.com/crime/warnings/creditcard.asp

Someone who works at Scotiabank sent this and advises it is for  real:

This one is pretty slick since they provide YOU with all  the  information, except the one piece they want.

Note, the callers do not ask for your card number; they  already have it.  This information is worth reading. By understanding how the VISA &MasterCard Telephone Credit Card Scam works,  you'll be better prepared to protect yourself.

One of our employees was called on Wednesday from "VISA",  and I was called on Thursday from "MasterCard".
The scam works like this: Person calling says, "This is  (name), and I'm calling from the Security and Fraud Department at   VISA. My Badge number is 12460 Your card has been flagged for an unusual  purchase pattern, and I'm calling to verify. This would be on your VISA card which was issued by (name of bank). Did you purchase an Anti-Telemarketing Device for $497.99 from a Marketing company based in Arizona?"

When you say "No", the caller continues with, "Then we will be issuing a credit to your account. This is a company we have been watching and the charges range from $297 to $497, just under the $500 purchase pattern that flags most cards. Before your next statement, the credit will be sent to (gives you your address), is that correct?"

You say "yes". The caller continues - "I will be starting a Fraud investigation. If you have any questions, you should call the 1- 800 number listed on the back of your card (1-800-VISA) and ask for Security.   You will need to refer to this Control Number. The caller then gives you a 6 digit number. "Do you need me to read it again?"

Here's the IMPORTANT part on how the scam works. The caller then says, "I need to verify you are in possession of your card".  He'll ask you to "turn your card over and look for some numbers".There are   7 numbers; the first 4 are part of your card number, the next 3 are the security numbers that verify you are the possessor of the card. These are the numbers you sometimes use to make Internet purchases to prove you have the card. The caller will ask you to read the 3 numbers to him

After you tell the caller the 3 numbers, he'll say, "That is correct, I just needed to verify that the card has not been lost or stolen, and that you still have your card. Do you have any other questions?" After you say No, the caller then thanks you and states, "Don't hesitate to call back if you do", and hangs up.

You actually say very little, and they never ask for or tell you the Card number But after we were called on Wednesday, we called back within 20 minutes to ask a question. Are we glad we did!

The REAL VISA Security Department told us it was a scam and in the last 15 minutes a new purchase of $497.99 was charged to our card.

Long story made short - we made a real fraud report and  closed the VISA account. VISA is reissuing us a new number. What the  scammers want is the 3-digit PIN number on the back of the card. Don't  give it to them. Instead, tell them you'll call VISA or Master card  directly for verification of their conversation.

The real VISA told us that they will never ask for anything  on the card as they already know the information since they issued the card! If you give the scammers your 3 Digit PIN Number, you think you're receiving a credit.

However, by the time you get your statement you'll  see charges for purchases you didn't make, and by then it's almost too  late and/or more difficult to actually file a fraud report.

What makes this more remarkable is that on Thursday, I  got a call from a "Jason Richardson of MasterCard" with a word-for-word  repeat of the VISA scam. This time I didn't let him finish. I hung  up! We filed a police report, as instructed by VISA. The police said they are taking several of these reports daily! They also urged us to tell everybody  we know that this scam is happening.

Please pass this on to all your family and friends.

Hello everyone,
How have you all been?

Have a couple of questions
My Grandmother was born in Toronto in 1912, KarenM informed me stats Canada was just now preparing to release 1909 births. I went online to order her birth certificate but was asked if I am 'next of kin' or 'executor of will'. Could I be considered a next of kin even though my Dad and Aunt would officially be next of kin. Has anyone ordered a Grandparent's birth certificate that still has a living parent, or sibling of parent. Would I need a certificate or proof of death as she only died a couple of years ago?

Also my Gr. Grandmother (Nan's mom) was apparently pregnant on the trip over to Canada, it's possible she may have lost the baby on the trip over. Does anyone know if this would have been registered here in Canada?

US Lookup Requests / 1900 Census, New York - Aylestock
« on: Friday 07 April 06 21:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi All
I am looking for James William Aylestock born 1886 in Ontario, Canada.
I have searched the Canadian 1901 and he is not there that I can find (or others for that matter)  :-\  I have found him in Canada in 1911. Rumor has it, his father died when he was quite young and due to his mother (who was born in Canada) being very ill he was sent to live in New York, either an orphanage or possibly relatives, am trying to find some hints of where his father, who was born in the USA may have come from or passed through on his way from US to Ontario, Canada, prior to his marriage in 1884.
James goes by the name William in the 1911 Canadian Census, Ethnic Origin: black or possibly mulatto.  The name may also be spelled Aylstock, Ailstock or Alestock.
Any help much appreciated

Hi Guys and Gals,
I found this thread in the Emmigrants - General section and thought Trotters may get more assistance here in the Australian boards :)

Hi all,
does anyone have access to passenger lists?
I am trying to find my Great great uncle Charles Wiltshire who was born in 1847 in Calne ,Wiltshire and at some point between 1861 and 1871 went to Australia(sent or of his own accord I don't Know).
Appparently he got married over there and he and his wife had 2 sets of twins that all died and then another child that survived.
I have no idea where in Australia he went.
Any help in this matter would be most appreciated

               Thankyou
              Trotters

World War One / King's Own Scottish Borderers - 2nd BN
« on: Wednesday 08 March 06 18:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
My mom's uncle, Horace Walter Matthews died 6 Oct 1917, from CWGC he is shown as being part of the King's Own Scottish Borderers, 2nd Bn. Using this site http://www.1914-1918.net/index.htm I have been attempting to map this unit's movements and where he may have fallen but i've been getting confused with all the talk of 'division' 'brigade' 'corp'  :-\. I think I may have traced his final battle to 'The Battle of Polygon Wood - 26th September - 3rd October 1917' but can't be sure with all the changing terminology............could someone please help :)
