World War Two / Jack Akers Royal Navy
« on: Thursday 27 September 18 09:11 BST (UK)  »
Morning, I hope someone can help me with the following:- All information I have is oral without any references.

Jack Akers, Royal Navy, chef, born 1910 to 1920 possibly Yorkshire.  He was in Durban, South Africa Feb/March 1943.

The story:  During the time Jack was in Durban, either shipping in and out or RR?, a illegitimate child was conceived, I doubt he even knew about the baby. At the end of the war, the mother could not explain to her husband returning from war, that a baby had miraculously appeared, so a friend "adopted" the child and raised it as her own.  The child (still alive) only found out just before the adoptive mother passed away, and the above info is all that remains.  I wonder if they assumed Jack came from Yorkshire because of the accent?

Any help would be great.  Unfortunately don't have Ancestry.

Catherine

Europe / Swedish birth c1872 Wilhemina Orm
« on: Tuesday 07 August 18 10:42 BST (UK)  »
Morning, I wonder if anyone could try and help with a birth of my ggrandmother Wilhemina Orm (seems to refer to herself as Mina / Mena).
I have recently found her Death Notice which gives her place of birth as Stockholm.  The only records for her are a second marriage in 1917 with a age of 45 (Birth year 1872) and death on 16/2/1936 age 54 (Birth year 1877), I'm inclinced to go with 1872 as this a age she gave at the marriage and not what the informant gave on her death notice.
By 1900 she is in Durban, South Africa - "marries" Ernest Frederick McFedden and has 3 sons. After the death of Frederick she marries John Johnson. Very little is known about her, she was a deck hand on a ship (was that normal?) which was how she came to South Africa and spoke Swedish to a friend Captain Larsen who visited when in harbour, he came from the same town as her.

I have tried FS, but found nothing and I really struggled with ArkivDigital and gave up!!!

Any help, please

Thanks
Catherine

Northumberland Lookup Requests / 1841 census
« on: Thursday 14 June 18 08:29 BST (UK)  »
Morning,  Please could someone have a look at an 1841 census for me - have a transcription form fs but would like to check if I'm missing any crucial information.

Joseph Ridley 1802 bap Kirkwhelpington.  Census reg HO0107 folio: 831/2

This is an extention of a previous post:http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=792004.0

Trying to link him to another tree on geni.com, they have his dob as 1806 but I'm assuming they have used the rounded down age on the 1841 census to calculate this.

I am also assuming the Mary on the census is his wife - a marriage for them would be great

Thanks in advance
Catherine

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Birth and parents for William Ridley c1778
« on: Thursday 19 April 18 09:39 BST (UK)  »
Morning, Please could someone help with a bap and parents for William Ridley born 1777/8.

1841 William Ridley, 63, Ag Lab
         Mary     "        65, Wife
         Robert  "       29
         William   "       13
Isabella  "        26 (Had a problem remembering her age!!!)
All born NBL.

1851 William Ridley, 73 Pauper ex Ag Lab born Warden
         Mary    "        75, born Kirkwhelpington
         Isabela  " Dau 48,  "        "
Robert   "  Son 34, St Johnley (St John Lee?)

Married Mary Codling 1802 Kirkwhelpington.
Bap 1802 Joseph at Kirkwhelpington
Bap 1806 Elizabeth at "
Bap 1807   Mary            "
All three bap give Willem "of Heydon" and Mary of this parish.

BT's for Warden and Heydon Bridge are l missing crucial years and I can't find him there.

There is a Joseph and Elizabeth Ridley bap children in Heydon Bridge in the right time.
Mathew 1773
Elizabeth 1776
Joseph 1781

I think the chances are reasonably good that this could be his parents as William and Mary name their children quiet strictly in a naming pattern. eg

Joseph 1802 - his father ????
Isabel   1803 - her mother
Elizabeth 1805 - his mother ????
Mary 1807 - mother
Codling 1809 - mothers maiden name
Mark 1811 - mothers father
William 1813 - father
Mary 1815
Mathew 1815
Ann      1818
Robert  1819
Jane      1820
John     1821 - well used family name

Thanks in advance.

Northumberland / Ridley's
« on: Thursday 08 March 18 08:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, please could a kind person have a fresh look at the following and see if they agree with my conclusions?

Starting with what it definitely correct:-
William Ridley (20/12/1859-2/8/1928 SA) as per birth cert.
Mother: Elizabeth Ridley nee Turnbull Father: John Ridley Ag Lab "Longhaugh Shields" Charlton East
Following John Ridley
Census 1841 (H0107 841/4) - 20-24 yrs  living at "White House" Kirkwhelpington NBL
Marriage cert  -24/10/1846 Thockrington m Elizabeth Turnbull father: William occ: Husbandman
Census 1851 (H0107 2417/144)- John Ridley Ag Lab 30yrs born Hill Head NBL
Census 1861 - John Ridley Wid. 40 yrs  Ag Lab "Longhaugh Shields" Birth Town: St John Lee (I know it is not a town but a parish!!)
Census 1871 - John Ridley Wid. 50yrs Railway Lab Bellingham Mill, Bellingham.
Possible death  2 Q 1879 Rothbury.

Conclusion 1
Birth for John Ridley:  1821 parents Mary and William Lab at Errington Hill Head
Bap 14/4/1821 at St John Lee.

If parents are correct then who was Mary?
Conclsion 2
Have a suitable marriage William Ridley to Mary Codling 4/4/1802 at St Bartholomew's Kirkwhelpington. I bit earlier than I expected, but don't find any other.
This couple have the following children:
Joseph 30/6/1802 Bap: Kirkwhelpington
Isabel   19/10/1803           "
Elizabeth 15/8/1805          "
Codling 21/7/1809            "
Mark 12/5/1811                "
William 1813             Heartburn
Mary    1815           St John Lee
Mathew 1815                  "
Ann  1818                      "
Robert  1819                  "
Jane 1820                      "
John 1821                      "
Margaret 1822                "

Census 1851 - William Ridley 73 born Warch? NBL(Think this should be Wark ?????)
Mary Ridley 75 born Kirkwhelpington NBL
                      Isabella dau 48 born        "
Robert son 34 born St Jonley NBL

Then possible birth for William bap 7/2/1779 at Simonburn - parents Thomas Ridley and Elizabeth Moor.
Problem: I would expect to find a son named "Thomas" born to William and Mary !!!!

Thanks for any help.

Regards
Catherine

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Richard Turnbull born 1834
« on: Wednesday 03 January 18 18:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I am looking for second marriage of Richard Turnbull born 1834/1835 Cramlington / Bedlington.
First marriage is to Eleanor Ternent (1837 - 1863) she dies 29/11/1863 during child birth.  Have 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 census which I am sure is the correct Richard Turnbull with wife Jane, but don't find a marriage.

Thanks
Catherine
