The Common Room / Apprentices at sea
« on: Friday 12 May 17 15:31 BST (UK)  »

Question for all,

Can someone please tell me who would have had to sign, if anyone, for a boy to go to sea as an apprentice in about 1840 ish.

My search is becoming more confusing and if someone was in a Bluecoat school, could or would it have been possible for him to leave and go to sea??

Looking at the information I have he would have had to put his age up a little but to have two boys, on the same ship, about the same age is more than a coincidence, and I do not believe in co-incidences.

Thanks, maybe this is the piece I am looking for.

David

Evening all,

I am trying to trace a will which would have been written/lodged/executed in the Gloustershire (sp)area.

I am doing this backwards .... I know the recipient, and think I know/suspect the origin but looking for proof, difficult I know, so any help will be appreciated.

Thank you, David

England / Bluecoat schools
« on: Friday 04 November 16 13:02 GMT (UK)  »

Good evening,

Can anyone please tell me how you can search for people who entered the Bluecoat schools in the early 1800s.

I am trying to find my GG grandfather family prior to him coming to Australia. James Bennett Gibbs. The only family info I have on him is that on his marriage certificate here in Aust he lists a Alfred L Gibbs as father .... not sure if fact or fiction as cannot find an Alfred L anywhere.

I know from family that he went to one of these schools..... and there it ends. Is becoming a quest and a little frustrating at times.

Thanking you in advance.

England / several brickwalls
« on: Friday 04 November 16 11:52 GMT (UK)  »

Good evening all.

I am Aussie trying to find my heritage and extended family and hoping someone can help me get thro' a couple of brickwalls please.

I have two people (one on each side of my family) for whom I cannot find much detail.

Janet Hancock, .. born about 1876 I believe in Manchester. I have found Mother and father and siblings but not much about her. My grandma did not talk about her much. Single mother and trying to find as much as I can about her please.

next, James Bennett Gibbs, my GG grandfather on the other side and I believe that he was a "bluecoat". Is there a way that I can trace his family please. His family once he came to Aust. is easy ..... but the Bluecoat school has become major "road block"

Any help appreciated.

Thanks   David
