Technical Help / ThreeDSecure not currently available
« on: Friday 03 January 20 19:13 GMT (UK)  »
I have been trying (yesterday and today) to make a reservation online with Premier Inn.  Filled in all details, debit card, etc., but after clicking 'Pay Now' continually get put back to payment page with message "ThreeDSecure not currently available"

No idea what is causing this or how to successfully complete my booking.

Any advice gratefully received!

Technical Help / Talk Talk phone number
« on: Wednesday 06 February 19 12:41 GMT (UK)  »
I have had an email from Talk Talk informing me that they are increasing their charges but up until tomorrow I can get a cheap fixed rate for 2 years in their sale.  They are already my ISP but my line rental is BT so there would be quite a saving.  It is true that their prices are increasing.

My query is the phone number given in the email to take advantage of the offer is 800 988 4508 and I cannot trace this anywhere connected to Talk Talk, I always like to be certain that emails and phone numbers are genuine before going ahead.

Has anyone used this number or can confirm it is definitely one belonging to Talk Talk?

Thank you.

An interesting new resource - collection of old negatives (thousands of portraits) taken by the various photographers who occupied the Post Office Terrace Studio in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Technical Help / Scam iTunes Invoice
« on: Saturday 30 July 16 22:59 BST (UK)  »
Watch out for a scam iTunes Invoice turning up in your emails.

I got one today and apparently they are circulating at the moment.  They hope to trick you into clicking on "If you did not authorize this purchase please go to Cancel/Manage Applications"

http://metro.co.uk/2016/06/10/heres-how-to-tell-if-your-itunes-invoice-is-a-scam-5935344/ shows an example which is exactly like the one I got.

Technical Help / Setting up new smart phone
« on: Friday 26 February 16 20:34 GMT (UK)  »
I am helping a friend to set up a new Microsoft Lumia 650 and switched on for the first time.

We have entered some wrong information in the initial set up and can't get back to correct them.

Have not continued with set up so not completed the process.

Is there a way to start the set up afresh?

Advice appreciated.

Technical Help / Free film/tv streaming site
« on: Tuesday 28 July 15 11:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Can anyone recommend free film/tv streaming sites that are safe and most importantly legal?

Googling brings up many sites but establishing whether they are legal or not is difficult, some people say they are, some say they are not.  Using Google's safe browsing feature shows some have malware problems but others seem OK or OKish.

So far the only one I have seen recommended as legal (Money Saving Expert) is viewster, the content seems mainly quite old stuff.

A different but connected query re Netflix - if you take out the sub for two to be able to view at the same time can they view different films or just the same one?

Any comments gratefully received.

Technical Help / Free Avast 2014 and Windows 8.1
« on: Monday 17 March 14 19:46 GMT (UK)  »
Before I try and download Free Avast 2014 to my son's laptop which is running Windows 8.1 I would be pleased to know if anyone has done this and were there any problems.

Another question - would you rely on Windows Defender as your only protection, from what I have read it is not sufficient.

Thanks,

Selina

The Common Room / Any of these names ring a bell?
« on: Monday 09 September 13 12:06 BST (UK)  »
For some years I have had a postcard photograph taken by Vere Holloway, Notting Hill, can't remember exactly where I got it, in with other stuff I bought somewhere.

It depicts a group of eight young ladies who look to be aged between 16 and 20 years old.

They have all signed the back on the same day 18 October 1918.

Names are Ivy King, Lily Grant, Madge Anson, Lucy Witcher, Mable Amos, Nellie E. King, Lizzie Lamont and Daisy Kimpton.

It would be nice to find someone linked to one of these girls.
