The Common Room / Two Charles Theodore Martin's, who's mine?
« on: Sunday 14 March 21 19:13 GMT (UK)  »
I've got myself in a muddle and I'm struggling to figure it out! I would really appreciate some help.

I applied for my grandfather's military record years ago because i wanted to start tracing my Martin line back yet the family knew very little about him other than that he was in the RAF in ww2 and that his fathers name was Walter Martin (engineer) from his marriage cert to my Gran, he was apparently a bachelor when he married. When i got his RAF record it had his birthday down as 9th sept 1898 and said he'd been born in London, my uncle had thought he was born in India and come into the UK when he was around 2 years old and educated in Scotland! It also showed that he had been awarded the Military medal in WW1, the London gazette had the award noted and gave his hometown as Leytonstone. I located a family on the 1911 census with a Charles Theodore Martin in Leytonstone but mother was a widow so went back to 1901 census and found the family and the father was a Walter, Bingo! I thought, even though the census gave estimated year of birth as 1895, I know ages can often be out. I applied for the birth certificate and the D.O.B came back as 10th Sept 1895, yes a little off but I still thought I had the right family. I've been researching these Martins for years. Had my DNA done and found links to the offspring of the sisters of Charles Theodore Martin of the 1911 Leytonstone family.

I posted on here a while back about my grandfather when I came across a Charles Theodore Martin of the 1939 register with a birth date of 10th sept 1895. I thought it must be my grandfather as i couldn't see any other Charles Theodore on the register, but he was listed with an Emily Elizabeth Martin! I got their marriage cert and it showed that his fathers name was Walter, an engineer. It also showed that he was a widower! Marriage took place in 1938 and yet he married my Gran in 1941! I then started thinking he was a bigamist! Someone on here also pointed out an article in the newspaper archive from 1934 about a Charles Theodore Martin who won the military medal who had been committing crimes under various aliases! A double whammy! The newspaper article notes that he had lost his wife not long after marrying her. I went looking for the marriage to the wife that came before Emily Elizabeth. Found a marriage for a Charles Theodore Martin to an Agnes Dorothy Massey in 1922 Kent. The father's name was again Walter who was an engineer, this time listed as a bachelor. Agnes Dorothy Martin passed away in 1934 in Reading so that would be 12 years after marriage not quite what the article had suggested but then who can trust what a con man came out with!!

I then turned my attention to Emily Elizabeth to see what had happened to her, got her death cert in. She passed away in 1967 Surrey, she was listed as a widow of Charles Theodore Martin. My grandfather passed away in 1959. I got to thinking did she know he was a bigamist or had she presumed he had died in ww2 when the war finished and he didn't return to her?!

I then noticed a death of a Charles Theodore Martin in Windsor 1954, applied for this and it is the death cert for the Charles Theodore Martin who was married to Emily Elizabeth! So I have clearly been wrong, my Grandfather was not the man who married Agnes and then Emily, he was not a bigamist. But whose birth cert have i got? Whose family is the one in Leytonstone 1911 that i have been researching? I can't see any trace of another birth of a Charles Theodore from around this time, it's actually quite a rare name with the Theodore in the middle.

I have to be related to the Leytonstone family as i have DNA connections to other family members. However all this made me go back and look at the connections. I have what I believe is a 2nd cousin but they only share 37 cM with me! Another relation from the family thought to be a second cousin comes in sharing 121 cM again not very high and perhaps not enough to be a 2nd cousin?

I'm so confused by it all!

Ayrshire / Alexander hunter 1834 Beith
« on: Friday 21 February 20 12:27 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to trace back my partners Hunter ancestry. We have got to his 3rd great grandfather Alexander Hunter born abt 1834. I can find him on the census returns from 1861 living in Renfrew. He first married in 1859 to Christine McVicar and they had three children (Alexander, Catherine and Isabella). Christina died in 1869. He then married Mary McInnes and stayed living with her in Renfrew. He died in 1897. I have his death cert and both marriage certs but information on them is conflicting! On both marriage cert's he says his father is James Hunter a labourer who is deceased. On the first cert he has his mother as Ann Mcneil (deceased) second cert he has his mother as Catherine Gillies (deceased)! I have put this down to error as the name of his first wife's mother on the marriage cert is Catherine Gillies, I have traced this line and the info confirms this was his firt wifes mother. His death was registered by his son in law and has that his father was an Alexander Hunter (sailor) and that his mother was a Mary Brown! I am sure it is the right death cert as both wives names are on it and the son in law is a William Gilmour and I have the evidence to show that's who his daughter Catherine married.

Can anyone shed light on why the info on his parents on his death cert could be so wrong? Did his son in law just make it up? I suppose I shouldn't rule out that the info on the death cert is correct and what he said on his marriage cert was wrong but I think it's unlikely.

On all census returns Alexander Hunter says he was born in Beith 1834 but I can't find any sign of his family being there on the 1841 and 1851 census. I want to look at parish registers to see if I can find his birth. Where can I find the registers for Beith parish church?

Any help appreciated.

Wexford / Molloy Ballymitty
« on: Sunday 30 June 19 11:32 BST (UK)  »
Just starting to try and track my Irish ancestors. My Great great grandfather was a Thomas Molloy born around 1852 in Ballymitty according to the 1911 census. he worked as a ship fireman and later as a dock labourer. He married 14th Aug 1886 to Johanna Carney nee Derry, marriage took place in West Derby. They had three children John, Nicholas and Bridget. He appears to have spent most of his life in the Liverpool area. I don't know when he came across from Ireland. On his marriage certificate his father is Michael Molloy a blacksmith.

Does anyone have any connection to Molloy's in Wexford? I notice that on the griffiths land valuation there is a john Molloy living in Hilltown, Ballymitty at a house with a forge. I am wondering if this may be a relation. How big is Ballymitty and how many forge's were there likely to be there around this time?

Any help or advise on how i might trace back my line or where I can find more info much appreciated.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / London metropolitan archives look ups
« on: Saturday 27 April 19 21:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I'm looking for someone to go to the LMA and get a copy of some information for me, I have the reference for the document, I have a month and year for the lookup but not a specific day. I don't think too much searching would be required. Does anyone know what the going rate of pay is for people who do this? Also is there a list somewhere of people that do it? Thanks

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Charles Theodore Martin marriage
« on: Tuesday 16 April 19 09:36 BST (UK)  »
Trying to find the first marriage of Charles Theodore Martin born 1895 West ham. Marriage must have happened sometime between 1911 and 1934. According to bmd there are 22 marriages for a charles t martin during this period. I ruled out all but two marriages.

1. 1922 Dartford. Charles T Martin to Agnes D Massey

2. 1924 West Ham. Charles T Martin to Nellie G Simmonds

Instead of applying to GRO for both these records I thought it would be a good idea to get them to do a search as it would cost a little less. So I requested a search for a charles Theodore Martin married in England fathers name Walter Martin and i stuck in a date of 1923, as they search a year below and above thought they would have to come across these two marriages and be able to find the right one for me. GRO came back saying couldn't find it. Now I'm left wondering if they did actually see these two records and rule them out because they aren't him or if they don't search that thoroughly when given so little info and haven't come across these records?! Anyway while the doubt remains I am trying to see if I can find these couples so I can rule them out for myself. Wondering if anyone here can help?

Here is what I found so far but not sure if it's right.

Agnes Dorothy Massey born 1891 in Wolverhampton mothers maiden name Hadcott. That's all I can find for this one!

Nellie Georgina Simmonds born 1906 West ham. Parents George Joseph Simmonds and Sophia Sarah Chilton. I can see this Nellie on the 1911 census with her family living at 51 Andrew street, silvertown, west ham

A recent clue I had was from a newspaper article where my grandfather stated that a year after his marriage his wife had died, I can't see likely deaths for either of these two woman. I can't locate them on the 1939 register either. Perhaps I am missing something?

Thanks in advance for any help.

The Common Room / How good are the GRO at finding records?
« on: Monday 15 April 19 21:28 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone ever had the GRO not find what they were looking for in a search request and then later found it them self and realised that the GRO should have found it with the details they had provided them?

I am wondering if anyone has information on this address and who was resident at it from 1939 into early 1940's. Does anyone have access to Kelly's directory and would they mind looking it up? Was it a gentleman's outfitters and who was the occupier? Thanks in advance.
