Hello, I'm trying to trace the movements of Lydia French Aylwin (b 1814) and her cousin George Aylwin (b 1799) both from London. According to a letter written by a relative, they arrived in NSW (am not sure if they arrived separately or together) and at some stage travelled to Chile, where they later married and had 2 children. I'm stumped as to how to find when they arrived in Australia, how long they stayed there and then moved on to Chile. Hoping someone who has access to shipping records can help me solve the mystery.

United States of America / William Williamson Duff Bruce - from Scotland to the US.
« on: Monday 02 September 13 03:41 BST (UK)  »
I am searching for anything on a William Williamson Duff Bruce. I have a relative who was born in Banffshire, Scotland, 1810/1811 and was baptised with the name William Williamson Bruce in January 1811. This name above appeared in the "US and Canada Passenger and Emigration Lists Index 1500s to 1900s", as having arrived in Mississippi in 1840 and applied for Naturalization. The name jumped out at me because my William's father was William Duff Bruce and for that reason I'm assuming it is the same person. I am in Australia I don't know how to find out anything more from here, and he seems to have disappeared as I can't find any marriage, census or death information on him.  Can anyone help?

Armed Forces / Royal Artillery Woolwich Kent

I have no idea about military matters so hoping someone can give me some advice here.

I have a Scottish relative by the name of Hugh Munro (b 1826 in St Andrews, Fife) who, in the 1851 census, was a soldier (corporal) in the Royal Artillery at Woolwich Dockyard, Kent.  In the 1861 census he is at the Battery, Newhaven, Sussex, now a Gunner in the Royal Artillery.

I'm wondering what was going on at the time - was there any unrest, or war being fought somewhere, because he seems to be the only one in his family to up and join the military. I can't seem to find him in any subsequent censuses - he and wife Bridget seem to have vanished after that.

Would appreciate any input from anyone on this.

Fife / Madras College, St Andrews - 1851 Census

Can anyone tell me why I can't find my gt gt grandfather (George Bruce) and his 2 brothers (John and William) in the 1851 Scottish census. They were all born in County Leitrim, Ireland between the years 1839 to 1841, but were sent to Scotland for their education.

By my reckoning they should all have been at Madras College, St Andrews at this time but I am unable to find them. Would there be any reason for this ... lost records perhaps?

Australia / Emigrant from Scotland

Hello, I'm hoping someone can help me find the answer to this one.

My gt gt grandfather James Seves Hosie came to Victoria, Australia from Leith, Scotland in about 1852. I think I've got his arrival details but his wife, Elizabeth (or Eliza) Hosie (nee Petrie) and daughter Isabella (b 1850) were not listed as travelling with him and I've searched the records but can't work out how they got here. I found James' arrival on the Koh-i-Noor in Dec 1852.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Down / Munro/Monro/Monroe family in Ireland
« on: Wednesday 16 August 06 07:08 BST (UK)  »
I was wondering if someone could help me trace some relatives.  Mary Munro married George Bruce  (he from Grange, Banff, and she from Fife) in about 1838 and went to live in Leitrim, Ireland.  George was shot and killed in the early 1840's and sometime after that, Mary moved to Newry, County Down with their 3 young sons.

Mary and her siblings were all born in St Andrews, Fife, and although I found the 5 youngest children and their parents (John Munro and Ann McCleod Braid) in the 1841 census in Scotland, most, if not all, seem to have completely disappeared from Scotland from then on.  I have not been able to find any deaths on Scotlands People for the family.

Their details are:

Katharine Monro – born 26 August, 1813,
Mary Monro – born 5 March, 1815. (Married George Williamson Bruce in about 1838)
John Monroe – born 6 October, 1816
David Monro – born 30 July, 1818
Jess Monro – born 15 May, 1820
Norman Braid Monro – born 18 April, 1822
Isabella Monro – born 29 January, 1824
Hugh Munro – born 20 August, 1826
Alexander Braid Munro – born 7 December, 1828
James Munro – born 1 October, 1830

As you can see, there are variations in the spelling of the surnames, which further complicates things. The IGI has a marriage for Norman Braid Munro in 1847 in "Ireland" so it could be that the others went there also, perhaps to help support Mary after the loss of her husband.  Does anyone have any knowledge of these people?  Thanks, Carolyn.
