Tyrone / Pomeroy and the Moon connection
« on: Friday 01 December 17 06:49 GMT (UK)  »
Some may know that Co.Tyrone has a 'son' that went to the Moon. Col. James Benson Irwin was an Apollo 15 astronaut and can trace his roots back to Pomeroy (Altmore).

https://www.ancestryireland.com/about-us/50-years-of-the-ulster-historical-foundation/from-pomeroy-to-the-moon/

I found that via marriage I am very very loosely connected to the same family ancestors and I'm trying without much success to find all the Irwin family members from early 1800s.

I know his great grandfather was Thomas Irwin born some time around 1807. He died Aug 28th 1892 with the stated age of 85. His daughter-in-law Ellen Irwin (married to Alexander 1875) was present at his death. It was also stated at the time of death he was a widower so indicating his wife (Sarah nee. Pherson) had previously died. Her death can be found Mar 3rd 1890 (aged 76). This time her son Alexander is present at death.

What's been suggested is that Sarah was the second wife of Thomas Irwin but while I can find no evidence myself of this I suspect it's likely but who the first is remains a mystery.

On the Griffith Evaluation for Altmore one Thomas Irwin can be found sharing a property with a Robert McKittrick. It so happens that Thomas' daughter Mary Ann Irwin marries a widower named Robert McKittrick in 1857. Mary Ann remarries Henry Young (a farmer) in 1870 suggesting that Robert McKittrick had previously died. In fact there's a death record for a Robert McKittrick aged 80 years old in Dungannon in 1869. This would make him much older than Mary Ann if it's the same one. Only record I can find for a Mary Young death (widow of a farmer) is in 1917 aged 86.

Next born is likely Sarah Irwin. She goes on to marry William Johnston (my connection is here) in 1858. Their children seem to settle in Australia with their son Robert Johnston being quite the character and gold prospector. There's photo of him complete with revolver on the hip, cowboy hat and boots and travelling by camel in the Australian outback.  :)

Alexander Irwin seems to be the first born son around 1839.

In 1844 John Irwin arrives and it's from him that that we get our astronaut. John marries Mary Jane Benson Apr 16th 1879 (a minor). They later move to the USA and Mary's death certificate records her birth as Jan 1st 1865 making her only 14 when married. However I can't find any birth for Mary that fits this date.

Here's where we seem to have a few years gap and then three more children, Matilda, Rebecca and Thomas. They are baptized 1852, 1856 & 1859 respectively. I've not yet done two much research on these so far.

What I'm particularly interested in is finding the marriages for Thomas Irwin and the death of his first wife if if it indeed turns out that he was married twice. I'd also like to find the birth or baptism records for the all other children.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  ;D

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Enhancing Documents with GIMP
« on: Friday 01 December 17 04:12 GMT (UK)  »
Greetings  ;D

I'm looking to find any tips/ticks to help enhance old parish documents using GIMP. I know I can change black and white levels and brightness and contrast etc but was hoping if anyone had any luck with blending layers or some of the filters that this software has.

In particular I'm trying to see if I can get to restore some of the faded text on parish records from the National Library or Ireland, specifically the Pomeroy marriages from 1837-1840

Many thanks

Can anyone suggest an idea/alternate as to what this surname is? It's been recorded as Dunigan on the marriage record but this name doesn't bring up other records, plus I see another 'i' in there. The three examples are the same family name. Two of Mary and her father William.

Much appreciated.

Antrim / Robert Gamble - Belfast wedding witness?
« on: Monday 15 May 17 17:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Does anyone know if Robert Gamble was a registrar or like a paid witness at weddings? I've seen this name numerous times and he seems to have been a witness at my relatives weddings but also random ones I come across.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Little help transcribing trades
« on: Wednesday 29 March 17 05:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi could anyone offer some ideas on the trades of the two people on the wedding document.

I keep think Issac Robinson looks like Barlier but I'm not sure there is such a thing. I had assumed it to be Baker but maybe too many letters.

James McAdam's is a little more tricky. Again every time I look at it I see Peursuing or something like that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Canada / Reavey/Reavy Family in Vancouver BC.
« on: Thursday 23 February 17 21:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm looking for information/family members on a George Reavey who died in Vancouver. Sadly George was killed after being struck by a vehicle and died on March 3rd 1972. His last known address was 2955 Horley St, Vancouver. I believe he's buried in Mountain View Cemetery in North Vancouver.

It's possible George was married in 1927 to a Mae (May) Coglin (Dillon) who was originally from San Francisco. George himself was from Belfast, North Ireland and first moved to Canada probably after 1910 (maybe later) and had served in the British Navy.

What I'm trying to confirm is whether my great-grandmother Mary Ann Reavy and the George I'm looking for have the same father. It's likely their mothers are different and it's also this I'm trying to find out.

George believed his mother was called Elizabeth Marks but in actual fact she was called Isabella Marks and she sadly died at a young age in 1896 when George was only 11. He and his brothers lived their teenage years with their Grandmother Letitia in Whitehouse, Belfast.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. ;D ;D

Antrim / Do you know these people? Belfast, likely Joseph Street.
« on: Sunday 12 February 17 00:15 GMT (UK)  »
Okay I know this a long shot but does anyone recognise any of these people?  ;D ;D

I know for sure who one of them is so hopefully that's a good start. 8)

The first photo (maryannhayes1) with the two ladies, the lady on the left is my great grandmother who was called Mary Ann Hayes (nee. Reavy). She was born approx 1878. On April 2nd 1896 she married William Hayes and they went on to have 13 children from 1896 to 1917. Birth records of the children indicate they lived at many addresses like Check St, Rowan St and Adair street but from 1901 all address are various houses in Joseph St in Belfast. Ultimately her death record is at 66 Joseph St in 1956.

On the second photo (maryannhayes2) with the three ladies my great grandmother Mary Ann Hayes is on the right.

I'm guessing these photos are from 1940s or 50s so if you had relatives on Joseph St around this time these could yours :D

Again I know it's a long shot with old photos and seemingly before the invention of supportive undergarments but hey, if anyone can solve this mystery of who the other people are the folks here can  ;D ;D

Good hunting  ;D ;D

Wicklow / Kinsellas in Wicklow
« on: Wednesday 08 February 17 09:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I've recently begun researching my ancestry and extended family. My sister's husband seems to have relations named Kinsella coming from Wicklow, Ireland. I'm interested in finding out more on their behalf.

What I know so far is that there's a James Kinsella (various spelling) born in 1834. He goes on to become a sailor/master mariner. Records of him can be found in the English 1871 Census docked at Liverpool on a ship called Crystal Palace. Additionally on the Scottish 1891 Census he's on a ship called Alice T docked in Ayrshire.

In 1854 James Kinsella marries a Maria Murray again in Wicklow and they go on to have several children. So far I've found four children and records for all births except Rose Kinsella.

Rose Kinsella (b1864)
Thomas Kinsella (b1867)
Sarah Kinsella (b1869)
Anthony Kinsella (b1872)

Anthony Kinsella was actually a crane driver at the Newport Dock Disaster in 1909 and is mentioned in the inquest. He's later awarded a medal for bravery before eventually moving to England to become a train driver.

What I'm most interested in finding out is James' birth and parents, as well as his wife's. I'm also actively trying to find any record of his travels and ultimately when and where he died.

If anyone can shed some light or point me in the right direction I'd much appreciate it. I do have an active subscription to Ancestry but have so far hit a brick wall with James.

Many thanks. ;D
