Merionethshire / Edwards in Llandderfel 1911
« on: Sunday 31 January 10 15:42 GMT (UK)  »
Using the 1911 census, I have found another, distant generation of my Edwards family.  Can anyone give me more information?

The Edwards family originally took over Llanerch y Baedd farm, Llandderfel between 1825 and 1841, with my GGG grandfather, Rees Edwards.  After his death in 1855, Rees' youngest son (Edward John Edwards)  took over the farm, and later it passed to his son, also Edward, after 1884.  In 1890, Edward married Catherine Davies, and they continued farming Llanerch Y Baedd.

By 1901, they had three daughters  -  Lizzie (Elizabeth), Gwen and Kate Anne, but this Edward died before the 1911 census, as his wife, Catherine, is now shown as a widow.  These three girls would have been 2nd cousins to my Dadcu (grandfather).

I haven't yet been able to find definite marriages for the 3 girls, as the names are quite common.  Is anyone related to any of these 3 girls? ??? :D

Merionethshire / Edward family, Sebonig farm near Llanaber
« on: Monday 17 August 09 20:42 BST (UK)  »
Having recently come back from  studying the records at Dolgelly, I have now managed to get back one more generation with my Edwards ancestors.

My GG Grandfather, Rees Edwards' parents appear to have been Richard Edward and Gwen Rhees of Sebonig.  (I found an entry for their marriage in 1763.)  Rees was baptised  in 1777.

I have also found possible siblings  - Mary, born 1780 and Edward, born 1773.  There appear to have been two previous children called Edward, but I haven't been able to find a burial for either.

Can anyone add anything more to this information, perhaps about Sebonig farm itself?  We drove up to the farmhouse and took a photo, but nobody appeared to be home.

Does anyone have access to monumental inscriptions at Llanaber church, as I didn't have time to find out any more?

Anglesey / Jane Roberts, Llanfechell b 1866
« on: Tuesday 14 July 09 20:26 BST (UK)  »
I've come to a dead end with this Jane Roberts, who appears on 4 censuses, all with the given birthplace of Llanfechell.  She appears to have been born in 1866, as all her ages follow on logically  ie  1881 aged 15, living with her cousin Humphrey Roberts (elder brother of my G Grandfather Evan Roberts) and his then wife, as cousin/servant at 7 Market Street, Llanbeblig, Caernarfon.
By 1891, aged 25, she was working as a housemaid in a doctor's house in Bangor, and by 1901 aged 35, she had moved to work in newtown, Montgomery as a housekeeper domestic.  On  the latest census of 1911 aged 45, she was back in Caernarfonshire, now married to her cousin Humphrey, who had been widowed before 1901.

I have been able to check their marriage in 1902 via the register office archives in Llandrindod Wells, but the name of her father is not given, so I have been unable to find out more about her birth in Llanfechell.  I have spoken to the registrar at Llangefni, who cannot locate a birth record for her, without more clues.

Does anyone have any ideas?  I had hoped that finding her parentage would have given me some info about my G G grandfather's siblings, as I can't get any further back with my Roberts family.  Help, please!!

Denbighshire / Betws Gwerful Goch help, please
« on: Thursday 09 April 09 09:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

I have also put this message on the Merionethshire list , as the parish is close to the border.

I'm hoping for some help with finding details about the burials of the following people.   They were my 7 times Great Grandparents.

Jane vch Griffith was married to Rowland John, and they lived at Bryn Mawndy (Bryn y Mowndir) in Bettws Gwerful Goch.  Rowland John died in 1685, and his wife, Jane, in 1700, all verified by their respective wills.

Having searched all the Bettws G G and Gwyddelwern Parish Records around that time, I haven't been able to find out which parish they were buried in.

I'd be very grateful if anyone can  help by looking at the PRs of nearby parishes, please.  Many thanks, if you are able to help.

Merionethshire / Meyricks of Llandderfel
« on: Tuesday 04 November 08 13:09 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have any connections with Meyricks from Llandderfel?  I've done some considerable research backwards, but have come to a brick wall with the descended family of John Meyrick, baptised 10th December  1841.

John's parents were John Meyrick Sr (son of Robert Meyrick and Margaret Jones  -  Llannerch Eryr)  -   at the time, in 1841, landlord of Bryntirion  -  and Elizabeth Edwards, daughter of Rees Edwards of Llanerch Y Baedd, Llandderfel.  Sadly, Elizabeth died soon afterwards, and John Meyrick Sr became blind, and by 1851, was an inmate of Bala Workhouse, so young John was now living with his grandparents.

Rees and Ann Edwards were my GGG Grandparents and, therefore, John Meyrick Jr was my 1st cousin, 3 times removed.  I've always felt sorry for him as, after marrying Sarah Jane Davies in 1885, and having a daughter, Elizabeth Mary Meyrick, also in 1885, he seems to have developed the same problem as his father, becoming blind and also ended up in Bala workhouse by 1901.  As a result, his wife and daughter were living with her parents in Wrexham in 1901, and after that, the trail ends.

I believe John Meyrick Jr died in Bala in 1918, but I can't find a direct link with his daughter, Elizabeth, either marriage or death, after 1901 when she was 15 and an apprentice milliner.

If anyone can shed any light on this, I'd be most grateful.

Cardiganshire / Walton/Jenkins Aberystwyth
« on: Tuesday 19 August 08 23:30 BST (UK)  »
I'm following a new line of enquiry which seems to be a possible link to one of my family.  Does anyone have connections with a William E Walton who married Gwendolen Jenkins in Aberystwyth in 1918, and who (probably) had at least 3 children  -  Edward M Walton, born 1820, Dorothy M S Walton, born 1921, and William T Walton, born in 1925?  There may have been more.

I believe this Gwendolen (born 1892) could have been my great aunt, the youngest sister of my grandmother, Kate (Catherine) Jenkins.  Their parents were Thomas Jenkins and Ellen (nee Davies).  Thomas was the son of Edward Jenkins, a tailor, and his wife, Mary, and Ellen's parents were John Davies and his wife, Dorothy (nee Jones).  The Jenkins family all lived in Aberystwyth.

If anyone can help, I'd be most grateful.

Glamorganshire Lookup Requests / Burials in Trealaw
« on: Friday 13 June 08 12:07 BST (UK)  »
Hello Cardiff

I'd be most grateful if you could look up possible burials of Evan Roberts and his wife, Catherine, who were both still around on the 1901 census.  As far as I know, they were living at the Royal Stores, 319 Brithweunydd Road, Trealaw, but I have no idea exactly when they might have died.  There is a possibility on BMD for Evan of 1921, and for Catherine of 1917, but I'm not sure of these dates.

Evan was born in Llanfor (Bala, Merioneth) in March 1850, and Catherine was born in Llandderfel (also near Bala, Merioneth) in about 1845/7.  I believe their son, Ellis, would have been running the Royal Stores, and they would all have lived together.

Monmouthshire / Rees family, Mynyddislwyn
« on: Wednesday 19 March 08 23:59 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have links to the Rees family ancestors or descendants from Mynyddislwyn?

My GG Grandmother was Catherine Rees, baptised April 9 1805, daughter of Thomas and Rachel Rees, and who married Thomas Lewis in 1829.  She and Thomas and two of their grown-up children are buried at Twyn Gwyn Baptist chapel, Cwmfelinfach or Ynysddu.  (Thomas and Rachel Rees- nee Jones -  were married on 10th November 1801.)

I believe Catherine had a brother, Henry, possibly born in 1804, who married Margaret ?? and had many children  -  Thomas, Daniel, John, Henry, Phillip, Mary, Joseph, Rachel, Margaret, William and Catherine.  In 1851 Henry and margaret were shown as living at Sychfrant, with father Thomas and mother Rachel still alive and living at Pantytrwyn.  By 1861 Henry and family were living at Pantyscawen.  After that, I can find no trace, except for Daniel and family living at Mynyddmaen Old Farm.

I'd be grateful for any help with this  as I can't find any evidence of more of Catherine's siblings.  I know a fair amount about the Lewis family after 1829, but if anyone can add more..........

Many thanks
