I wonder if anyone can give me any clues to find some more details of Gt Gt Grandfather.

He was born Henry JOHNSON 10 Jun 1847 in Westminster.  There is only one census I can see him on, 1871, where he is a sapper in the Royal Engineers stationed at Dover Castle.  He started in 10th Company, and in 1872 moved to 43rd company.

I have his service records, No 9728, enlisted June 1868, discharged June 1879, suffering Dementia (Suicidal) in a medical report dated June 1878.  I can't decipher everything it has on the report, but his condition appears to have been thought permanent, and that he wouldn't be able to support himself, and that the condition had been brought about due to the heat of the sun in India.

I have census's for his wife in 1881 (Middlesex), 1891, 1901 (Both Salford Lancs), and she listed on each of them as Married.  By Feb 1906, he is listed as deceased on his daughters marriage certificate, but he never appears on any of the census's.

I found a tree on Ancestry that included Henry, and had him dying in Military Asylum, date unknown.  I contacted the tree owner, but they didn't know where they got that information from, and I haven't found him on any other tree sites.

He isn't buried with his wife, as I have the grave record for her.

Also, unless there were some shenanigans going on (!) he had a daughter born in Middlesex Nov 1879, and a son born in Salford in 1883

I would like to find just where he was 1881, 1891, 1901, and when/where he died.

I have looked extensively thru the census's, and I can't find anything, I'm hoping that someone might know which hospital/institution its likely he would have ended up in?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Scotland / William Hugh Craig
« on: Wednesday 21 May 08 18:53 BST (UK)  »
If anyone has any expiring credits on Scotlands People, would you kindly have a look for this birth?

He is William Hugh Craig, son of William Hugh CRAIG, who is listed as a detective on his 1906 marriage (in Salford Lancs), born c1885 somewhere in Scotland.

There is just one William Hugh on the site, but not much point me getting credits, as this is, so far, the only person from Scotland I have come accross.

Many thanks for looking

World War One / Died in the First World War

I wonder if anyone can help.  I'm looking for a Uriah GALLEY, born stoke 1878, by 1901 he was calling himself Hugh GALLEY.

I have found a medal card for a Hugh Galley, in the Yorkshire Regiment, marked as dead.  I found the same person on the CG site, died in France 06/11/1918.

But, I don't have any information to confirm its "my" Hugh Galley.

The name is v v rare, which makes me suspect its probably him.

I can't find any other record of the death to check the age.  I've had a look at the National Archives, but nothing there apart from Medal Card.  I've googled and seen one or two PPV sites that seem to have possibly relevant indexes, but I can't find what level of detail they are likely to give me, so I'm a bit loathe to part with my cash just yet......

If anyone could find out how old he was, I'd be very grateful.

Many thanks

Gloucestershire / Bateman & Averis
« on: Sunday 13 April 08 20:03 BST (UK)  »
Wasn't sure where to post this, so pls forgive if its in the wrong place.

I have a Joseph BATEMAN, born Shipton Ollife 1794.  He has 7 children 1822-1840 born in sevenhampton.  I got the birth certificate for the 1840 child, Emma, and it shows her mothers maiden name to be Margaret AVERIS.

Now, this is where I think it gets messy.  Margaret on the 1841 census is ticked as coming from Gloucestershire.  In 1851, she states she comes from Eldersfield, Gloucestershire.  But Eldersfield is in Worcestershire as far as I can see.  She dies in 1860, and birth year is approx 1801.

1851 Census Piece 1969 Folio 336 Page 24 (emma isn't on this, she is living with her sister).

I can't find a marriage for Joseph & margaret, nor can I find baptism for margaret, in fact, there are barely any AVERIS anywhere.

I have seen the online registers for Eldersfield, and tho I'm not sure how complete they are, there doesn't appear to be any averis at all.

Can anyone find the marriage/baptism, or offer any further clues?

Many thanks

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Doncaster Lookup
« on: Sunday 09 March 08 13:34 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to trace a Joseph Field JOHNSON.  He lived in Middlesex in 1841, but was marked as not being from Middlesex.  He died October 1847, Age 42, so born c1805.

Then I came accross a marriage in Doncaster for a Joseph JOHNSON to Susannah FIELD 20 Nov 1804.

Would anyone with Doncaster Records be kind enough to see if my hunch is correct?

Many thanks

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Kent Marriage c1811
« on: Monday 21 January 08 20:25 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone has any kind of Kent Marriage Index that they could look up the following.

I have a Thomas CROUD, born c1774 in Folkstone, only have details from census so far, wife Charlotte c 1789.

There is a tree on Ancestry who has this Charlotte as HAWKINS.  I've contacted them a couple of times over the last few months, but got no reply.  It does look likely tho, as Charlotte was born in Hastingleigh, and there is a Charlotte HAWKINS baptised 1791 there, I have the parish transcipt for that.

That tree has the marriage as 14 Oct 1811, but no place :-(

Their first child, Charlotte Croud, gives birth place as Denton 1817,  Two later children are born in Swingfield, George 1827, Edward 1828.  There are submitted records on IGI which match the dates, but give the place as Deal, which may or may not be right.  I have my dates/places so far from Census.

So basically, I'm after the details of the marriage!  Would appreciate any help, as I've exhausted all the ways I can think of finding it.

Many thanks for reading.
