Armed Forces / Simple question about soldiers during late 1790's - early 1800's
« on: Friday 17 April 15 02:20 BST (UK)  »
What if today is year 1814, what if this soldier was being killed in the battle in Europe.
Would his family get any letter from his army regiment to inform them about their son being killed ? Did any soldiers carry any book or paper  to inform about their family in their pack ? Or they do not care about it ? What do u think ?  Just wondering that is all.
Many thanks
Maggie

Sligo / The Brennans from Curry, Sligo, Ireland
« on: Thursday 16 April 15 17:52 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone

My Brennan family records from Curry, Sligo, Ireland 1795.

My 4x great grandfather Edward Brennan was born in Curry just south of Tubbercurry in about 1794 or 1795.  He enlisted with 88th Regiment at aged 18 on May 25 1813 in Sligo as private soldier.

He was sent to fight against Napoleon's army in Toulouse France during Easter 1814, Later on 88th Regiment were sent over to Scotland during 1817 to 1819.     He met my 4x great grandmother Isabella Rae who came from Dunnottar not far from Stonehaven in Scotland while he was stationed at Fort George and Aberdeen during the years 1817-1819 while other 88th Regiment soldiers were stationed at Edinburgh Castle.   Then 88th Regiment were sent down to Hull Yorkshire England during the end of 1819, Edward and Isabella got married on Feb 7 1820 at parish church of Drypool in Hull, Yorkshire, England.  My 3rd great grandfather James Brannen was born at Hull garrison on Feb 22nd 1820.  He was christening on Feb 27th... they were Roman Catholics.

Later 88th Regiment left England for Ireland.   Edward remained with 88th Regiment until he was very unfit and illness during October 1822, they discharged him from 88th Regiment at Dublin Hospital.

The Brannen family decided to move away to Aberdeen Scotland for a short time where they had 3 more children then the family moved again to settle down in Montrose Scotland.

Edward's discharge Army papers showed that he was born in parish of Curry.  I have asked anyone in my family out there in the world and somebody told me that is very IMPOSSIBLE to find Edward's family history or records from Curry Church because their church records are only started after 1860s.

My frustrations still carry on since I became family history researcher since 2004.  I wish that Edward died after 1855 so Scottish Death entry would tell me who were his parents but no luck because he died of dropsy during April 25 1851 at aged 55.  I have asked all my relatives out there and nobody knew about Edward's family.  That is shame.   Still stuck on brickwall.

If you knew anything about my side from Curry, Sligo,  please share with me.

by the way I visit Ireland last year for 6 nights in Westport for our holiday and we went out for a day tour to visit Curry from Westport.  I can't believe that Curry is very rural village very few houses, pub, and church.

I would love to hear from any Brennans from Curry, Sligo, Ireland.   Much appreciated.

thank you  Cherrio Margaret

Europe / Lewis Jonson (Johnstone ) born Gothenborg Sweden 1810
« on: Thursday 09 April 15 20:49 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

I just wanted to know if it is possible to find any birth records from Sweden from 1810 from Gothenburg Sweden.

I am looking for Lewis Johnston (Jonson) birth entry that he was born in 1810.  He was listed as British Subject and lived in Dundee, Scotland with his wife Helen Grubb - census 1861.

Lewis went on Dutch ship as cabin boy in 1820 at 10 years old,   many years later he joined British Navy as seaman.

He was married to Helen Grubb in 1838 in Dundee, Scotland.   He was uncle of my 2x great grandfather William Johnston.   William was looked after by his uncle Lewis when he was wee laddie.    I do not know what happened to William's parents William Johnston and Christina Grubb that was listed as his parent on his marriage entry in 1871 to Euphemia Stewart in Dundee.

Anyway, Lewis' death entry on January 12 1878 that he died and showed that his death entry that his parents were Ormond Johnstone and Euphemia Pratt.   I cannot find Ormond and Euphemia's marriage entry in Scotland but I am wondering what were they doing in Sweden in 1810 while Lewis was born in Gothenburg.    Ormond was ploughman.   Why in Sweden ?  maybe related to Shipping or whaling jobs over there ? what do u think ?    I am puzzled how did Lewis ended up as cabin boy on Dutch ship at 10 years old so young to be away from his mother and father ??  I know it was normal like that in old days.   I would love to hear from you to see if you can dig up any records on Johnstone/Pratt or my side  William Johnstone and Christina Grubb.

for records,  Helen and Christina Grubb were sisters  from St.Andrews Fife,     I even asked Dundee Registars for  help today and they can't find William Johnstone's birth record with his mother Christina or father William or any marriage record... where did my William came from ??? huh ?

many thank you  cherrio Margaret

Good morning everyone, here is Maggie from Canada,

I would like to ask for big help that I would like to see if somebody would be happy to go to Montrose Public Library to dig up on microfilm or some newspapers to find my 4th great grandfather Edward Brannan's obituary on Montrose Arbroath & Brechin Review newspapers from anytime from April to June 1851.   He died of dropsy at aged 55 on April 23 1851 in Montrose, Scotland, I need to know if any newspapers from Montrose published his obituary to tell about his family from Sligo Ireland, but I am still not be able to break my brick wall on Brennan family history from Sligo Ireland because he died in 1851 in Montrose Scotland.  That is shame that nobody in my family or relatives out there in the world know anything about Edward's parents or siblings from Sligo Ireland.   I know that he was Irish soldier with 88th Regiment and he ended up that he was marrying Scottish lassie in Hull England while he was soldier in 1820, then they discharged him from army in 1822 from Dublin hospital ... later the Brannen family moved to Aberdeen in late 1820's then they moved to settle down in Montrose  in early 1830's until their death.

My 3rd great grandparents - James Brannen and Susan Peters who were married in Montrose in 1840 but they moved up to settle down in Aberdeen.   My Brannen families spread all over from Montrose, Aberdeen and Dundee.  If you are related to this family please contact me.

I am hoping that Montrose Library or Angus Archives from Forfar something like that have any microfilms on old newspaper to find obituary on my 4th great grandfather Edward Brannan (Brennan/Brannen) from April to June 1851 (he died in April 1851).

Any questions please email me anytime.  I would be very happy to hear from you.  Thank you and have a great day cherrio all the way from Canada.

Sligo / Old Church Records in Curry, Sligo Co. from late 1790's
« on: Tuesday 25 June 13 15:22 BST (UK)  »
Good morning everyone on Rootschats.

I need to know if there is any old church records in Curry, Sligo county from 1790's ?  but I know it would be very impossible because church records from that area would be from 1870's but I just found out that my ancestor Edward Brennan who was Irish soldier with 88th Connaught Rangers from 1813 to 1822, finally just last week the army papers images finally showed up on Ancestry website that one of the records that said that his birthplace was written as Curry as my original army discharge papers this form was written that his birthplace was parrish of Currea but thanked to Ancestry website that they provided new images of army records finally I know where was his birthplace now.   Is there any chance to find the records in Curry ?  he was born in about 1795 and he joined British army in 1813 and bad news that he was married to Scottish lassie,  he died in Montrose Scotland just outside of Dundee in 1851 that is shame because of Scottish death entries did not processed until 1855.  I have not break my brickwall on my Brennan ancestors from Sligo but I am glad that I know that he was born in Curry, Sligo from his army papers.  but no idea who was his family in Sligo.  I am coming to visit Ireland next year for first time as it is my dream to visit those Emerald Isles finally coming true.   If you are related to those Brennans from Sligo area.  Please contact me.  Thank you.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Hello frae Canada again
« on: Tuesday 16 October 12 22:59 BST (UK)  »
hello again,
I would like to hear from you that I need your opinion to see if the family photo was actually taken in about 1905 but I felt that they were taken in early or late 1890's,  the gent with mustache was my 2x great grandfather who was born in 1852, so i am going to show you another photo of himself when he was old man while he was visiting his daughters in Canada during 1917 or 1918 for a year before he was sailing back to Scotland where he died in 1922 aged 70.  Do you think that gentleman with mustache in family photo is the same man in other photo?

Also other photo showed of my great grandfather when he was young who was born in 1884, the photo was taken in around 1905 or 1910 but I could be wrong again?  Can you guess which one is wee laddie in the family photo is same man as young man in another photo?  please help me out thank you.

Cheshire / Cheshires death entries
« on: Friday 12 October 12 13:47 BST (UK)  »
Hello from Canada

I am wondering if there is website where you can look up death entries with photocopy of original death certificate from register house ?

For example whenever I use website Scotlandspeople.gov.uk where we can pay for view to see the birth/marriage/death entries with photocopy of certificate such like that.

What about English records? is there any website like that?  It would be great if we have same kind of website like that Scotlandspeople.gov.uk with English records?  Please let me know.  thank you

I am digging up on my Baker family tree from Cheshire and Durham.  If you are related to the Baker family from Cheshire.  Please write me back.  thank you

Maggie :)
