World War One / ww1 medals back ground
« on: Friday 28 June 13 17:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi All  :)

I am still trying to find some form of army records of my grandfather Walter Thomas Walters 15 Sept 1888 - 21 May 1952. My gran gave me a cap badge and a medal ribbon. I did find a medal record for a Walter T Walters. But do the card and medals match? I thought my grandfather was in the South Wales Borders (born, lived and died in Monmouth, South Wales). Can anyone help please? :)

World War Two / Army Camps in Italy/North Africa
« on: Friday 23 November 12 08:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All :)

Can anyone help me to locate: General Hospital Number 22, BNAF sent there 9.3.1944? Transit camp 305 sent CMF sent there 18.7.1945? And Transit camp 65. These facts are taken from my father's WW2 army records. I keep wondering where they were in my father's three years service in Italy/North Africa 26.2.1943 to 6.4.1946.
Because he was in the catering corps (started out with the Welsh Borders, but also with the 8th army), he spent a lot of time at these transit camps. Any ideas anyone? :)

The Common Room / Sinking of the SS Ravansworth 15 September 1917
« on: Friday 01 June 12 20:14 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help please? ;D

William Charles Hinkin (born around 1892), died on the 15th September 1917 when his ship SS 756 Ravensworth was in a collision and sank off Belfast Lough. He was aged 25 and an assistant engineer, born in Mole (MOLD, Flintshire). He was living at 57, Walters Road, Llanelly. The ship was registered at Newcastle. I have lots of codes like: Page 246/Box 0070/BT334 service and Page 14/0071/0069. No idea what these mean. Would love to know a little of what happened, the ship (maybe a picture), and where (if found) the body of William is buried. Name on ship's role W C Hinkin.

Can anyone help in any area? Please.

Armed Forces / Re: South Wales Borderers Regiment
« on: Tuesday 18 October 11 16:45 BST (UK)  »
Good afternoon :)

Father was called up 15th Nov 1939 into the South Wales Regiment, Soon because he was a chef, transferred to the Army Catering Corps. By the 11 Feb 1943 he was on placement attachment to Serial 36026, then sent to North Africa on the 24th Feb 1943. Doe's anyone know if the 36026 is still in the South Wales Border or a ACC regiment.

Another question: :) By July 1945 he was posted to 305 Transit Camp CMF Maybe in Italy or North Africa, spent the rest of his service there till 1946. Wonder where this camp was or its purpose.
Any help please? ;D

Armed Forces / Understanding the codes on army records
« on: Tuesday 18 October 11 06:26 BST (UK)  »
Good morning one and all :)

I am trying to understand my fathers service records for WW2, would love some help to understand some of the codes the army used.

My father Thomas John Walters 1919-1982, was a chef all of his life, so he spent his army life in the cook house also. But where was he between 15th Nov 1939 and 10th July 1946. The records say he was in the UK for 3 years and 131 days, overseas 3 years and 40 days, and in the UK again 94 days. I know he was in North Africa and Italy (Got engaged to a local girl, but my gran put a stop to that, he returned to Wales, met my mam and here I am 62 years later).

ACC=Army Catering Corps
NA=North Africa
BNAF=British North Africa Force
CMF=Central Mediterranean Force

Any offers of help please? :)

David

P.S. I also have a subject "READING ARMY RECORDS" up on site, but don't know how to link them. :(

Can anyone spare the time to read my fathers army records? :)

Would love to know what is said in these papers. My father was born 16th March 1919 and died 19th Sept 1982. He had just finished his chef training, and spent his army life as a cook. He spent all of his life as a chef. I have seven photocopy photos of his records (here are some).

Would love your help.

Breconshire / St Davids, Brecon
« on: Thursday 06 October 11 06:35 BST (UK)  »
 :) Help please.

Does anyone know the names of the local parish churches in St Davids? Many of my family members lived and died in Llanfrynach, Brecon but were born in St Davids. Sadly not a place I have been or know much about.

P.S. Are the parish records on line, anyone know? :)

Breconshire / Walter WALTERS c1803
« on: Wednesday 05 October 11 14:34 BST (UK)  »
 :) Can anyone find a birth for a Walter Walters born around 1803 in St David's, Brecknock, Wales.

On his marriage to Margaret Davis (Parry) on the 19th Feb 1853, he says he is 50, his trade is a carpenter, and his father is another Walter Walters and again a carpenter, but now deceased (Maybe Aug 1847).

Walter is a widower and Margaret is also a widow. Margaret Davis (Parry) born in Llanfrynach,  says she is age 40, and her father is Lewis Parry. Birth around 1813? But I cannot find that either.

Any help out there please?

Walter's first wife was Esther Davies 1806-1841.
Margaret's first husband was Thomas Davis 1812-?
