The Common Room / Searching for cousins - Smethwick area?
« on: Thursday 17 August 17 13:32 BST (UK)  »
Are there any children/grandchildren of Beryl S Janes (formerly Pritchard, born June 1928 and my mum's baby sister!) married to James Janes? I'm trying to research my grandfather, John David Pritchard - and if he is your grandfather (or great-grandfather) too, maybe you have a photograph of him?  He died two months before I was born and I've never even seen a photo, let alone met him. His dates are 19.2.1894 - 12.1.1946.

Hope you're out there - somewhere!  :)

World War Two / My uncle, John Albert (Jack) Pritchard
« on: Thursday 17 August 17 13:04 BST (UK)  »
My uncle Jack born 5.6.1918 and died in 1979 - I believe from my mother that he was taken prisoner by the Japanese in WW2. He was born in Smethwick, Staffs - in the borough of King's Norton then, I believe.  Cannot trace any details of marriage, so probably no heirs (my cousins!). Can find nothing on the 1939 Register for the house in which his parents and siblings lived then (one of them was my mom!) - so presume he had enlisted already? - so with whom, where did he go, was he captured etc.  He was obviously released as he lived until 1979.  Any information would be really appreciated!

Thanks in advance

World War One / HMHS Oxfordshire

Many thanks to all who helped my research on my maternal grandfather, John David Pritchard, K.R.R.  I found out that he was shipped home on the HMHS Oxfordshire in February 1916 and wondered if anyone has any information on the ship, facilities etc - where he would have landed in the UK.  I've managed to find a picture of the ship and found out it was scrapped in 1958 but would like to know more.

I'm off to Flanders fields in November hoping to tread in his footsteps so would like to go prepared!

Thank you!

World War One / King's Royal Rifles

Hi everyone - a newbie!
My granddad was in 6th Batt. K.R.R. and received Pip, Squeak and Wilfred (1914/5) - yet according to his regimental website his battalion never left the UK! Had no response from them - and short of going down to Winchester to the Royal Green Jackets museum (they absorbed K.R.R. many years ago) I don't know how to proceed.  Going to Ypres in November and wanted to find out exactly where he got his campaign medals - I know he was discharged through "sickness" (gassing??) in July 1916.  He died two months before I was born so never knew him - and my mother has been dead sometime now so I have no-one left to ask.  Many thanks in anticipation!
