The Common Room / How Much Service To Get An Army Pension pre 1870?
« on: Tuesday 03 April 18 18:37 BST (UK)  »
My  Grt Grandfather, Ralph RILEY(RIELLY) born 1830 in Co Meath, is shown in the 1901 census to be an army pensioner.  I have also found that he was in the 81st Regiment of Foot and served in India during the time of the Indian Mutiny 1857/8.  I have a photograph of a relative(Ralph was the only relative to serve in the forces so we assume it is him) in some kind of uniform with four medals showing, one of which looks like the Indian Mutiny Medal. What I would like to know is how long did you have to serve to get an army pension and what medals would Ralph had got for his service?

Yorkshire (West Riding) / The Vanished Adam ARCHER of Dodworth
« on: Wednesday 21 March 18 20:14 GMT (UK)  »
My grt grt grandfather Adam ARCHER born about 1830 in Silkstone.  He married Caroline FOX in 1852 at Silkstone.  Between 1852 and 1861 they had 5 children.  I can not find any trace of Adam either on the 1851 census or any census after that. He is one of several missing links in my family but he is the most confusing why disappear from such a young family? He seems to have vanished, was it because his wife was 10yrs older than him?  Can anyone help find him?

« on: Monday 26 June 17 21:01 BST (UK)  »
A widow Mary Ann CURTIS married my grt grandfather Jonas WHITHAM 18.5.1857 at Hull but on 17.8.1862 he married again.  Bigamist you my think but I can not find Mary's death cert.  I have found children born to these two in 1857 and 1866.  So bigamist he surely was.  Can anyone help to find what happened to Mary?

Family History Beginners Board / WHITHAM Mary Ann where are you?
« on: Tuesday 21 March 17 18:30 GMT (UK)  »
My grt grandfather, Jonas WHITHAM was widowed in 1856 and married again in 1857 at Kingston upon Hull, to Mary Ann CURTIS born 1827, a widow, nee McLaren.  So far so good but in 1862 he married Sarah CARTWRIGHT under an alias, William Kitson Dennison, a combination of his mother and 1st wife's names. On the 1861 census Jonas is back in his home town of Wakefield with his children but no wife but he is shown has married.  I can't find Mary Ann on this census or other census or a death certificate for her.....so was grt granddad a bigamist?
