Armed Forces / Uniform identification help please
« on: Sunday 02 June 13 08:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

This may be a bit of a longshot but I was hoping that someone might be able to offer some help with a uniform ID or rough date estimate for these men please? Unfortunately I don't have access to the originals and I haven't seen the backs, but any help would be very much appreciated! The family has links to Russia as well as the Birmingham area.

Many thanks,
Sophie

Lanarkshire / 1841/1851/1861 census lookup- Ann Scott, born 1797 Glasgow
« on: Monday 03 January 11 19:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I wonder if anyone could do me a huge favour and see if they can find my Ann Scott, single, born 1797 Glasgow. Her parents were William and Janet Scott, but I am unsure of when they died. According to death certificates, her father William was a 'master wright' and he was supposedly a burgess of Glasgow.

I am stumped as to why I can't find her on any of these censuses. She appears on 1871 census with her widowed sister Isabella Stirling at 248 Gallowgate, Glasgow, and in 1881 at Duke Street with her niece Janette Hart. She died at this Duke Street address in August 1881.

I thought I had found her in 1851 at 37 Garnet Hill St, but then realised this Ann Scott was born in England and is listed as a widow. The same lady also appears in 1861 with the same details, so I feel these aren't one-off mistakes disguising my Ann Scott.

Any help at all would be fantastic. I have hit a brickwall with William Scott, but feel there must be more to discover, especially as he was a burgess. My hope is that Ann may provide more clues if I can locate her on earlier censuses!

Many thanks,

Sophie

Lanarkshire / Glasgow burial- location of 'Old Churchyard'?
« on: Friday 17 December 10 11:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I have an ancestor, Gavin Scott, whose OPR burial record shows he was buried  in Glasgow 'Old churchyard'. Others listed on the page are 'St Mungo' or 'New', and I was wondering where this old churchyard would have been? I have a feeling this may relate to the Cathedral but I could be wrong as the information is pretty limited on the page and unfortunately I'm not very familiar with the area.

I am planning to visit (weather permitting!) this weekend and would love to see the sort of area my Gavin was buried in.

Many thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Europe / Kate/Catherine Vosolewsky, St Petersburg
« on: Saturday 04 December 10 22:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I wonder if anyone has access to any records mentioning a Kate/ Catherine Vosolewsky (nee Ralph) in St Petersburg area around 1900ish? Not sure what her husband's name was but I think she had a daughter called Daisy. Daisy probably married a Bertie ( Albert?) Goodyear but not sure if this was before or after 1900.

Bit of a longshot but I thought it was worth a go and I would be so grateful for any help.

Many thanks,

Sophie

Hi everyone,

I would be really grateful if anyone could offer a rough date for this photo. Unfortunately there is nothing on the back of the photo which I appreciate does make it harder. He is quite a formidable man! I wonder if this dress is typical of the time or does it look like some form of uniform?

Many thanks for your help!

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Marriage lookup please: St Martins Birmingham
« on: Wednesday 02 June 10 20:27 BST (UK)  »
Hello all

I would be so grateful if someone could have a look for this marriage record please:

Taken from IGI: John Rolph (should probably be Ralph) married Elizabeth Pride 14 Sep 1789, St Martins, Birmingham

It would be especially useful to know whether Elizabeth was a widow. I am hoping this marriage could be the correct one to break through the brick wall in my friends family history!

Many thanks for your help.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Date ideas please!
« on: Monday 10 May 10 20:36 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

This photo is one in my album which I would love to know a date for. Although the back is blank and there is no photographer information I was hoping that the outfit might offer some clues. Am I right in thinking this looks like Russian dress?

I would also be intrigued to know if anyone thinks the baby below looks like the same child? From what I can gather from the photographer information, the baby photo would have been taken between 1891-1910.

Many thanks for any help you can give.

Hello everyone,

I would be so grateful if someone could offer a date for this photo. I am hoping that the date will fit with my idea of who this may be! An estimated age for the gentleman would be great too, I think he looks reasonably young?

The back is completely blank so I haven't scanned it.

Many thanks for your help,

Sophie

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Date for this photo please?
« on: Saturday 03 April 10 23:22 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I wonder if anyone could offer any suggestions for a date for this photo please? My best guess so far is mid 1860s but I could be totally wrong!

I would also like to know if anyone has any idea what the significance of this photo is? I felt that it is unlikely to show a woman in mourning as her dress is too elaborate. I have an idea who this family member may be but would like to get some other people's ideas before I settle on this guess!

Many thanks and a happy Easter to you all,

Sophie
