Midlothian / McGregor look up please--Edinburgh
« on: Monday 23 April 07 05:15 BST (UK)  »
My great great grandfather was James McGregor. He married Margaret Peacock at Hawick in early 1800s. Their children were David[ died] then another David, Jane[ or Jean] Joseph , and Robert. Robert was born in Edinburgh. Could anyone please find out for me if they are mentioned on the 1841 census for Edinburgh. They came out to Australia in the 1800s, James was a cabinet maker.
Also are there any records available showing when they would have left Scotland for Australia.I presume that they were assisted passengers. Thank you for any help.

Somerset / Looking for Hill descendants, from Upton
« on: Thursday 01 March 07 03:07 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find any descendants of Thomas and Jane Hill, from 'Upton Farm' Upton, Somerset. I think Thomas died May 14th 1853. His grave may be in the churchyard of the now ruins of St James church, which was close to his farm. Some of his children are also buried there--Jane his wife[ 1862], Samuel, Grace, Henry, Jane[ his children]
His son Edward, married Emma? children were Rosa Jane, Elizabeth, John, Emma
Other members of Thomas'  family were Elizabeth[ married Charles Hill,]  Mary Ann Hill [ married John Hill from Bampton], Sarah Hill [ married Laurence Dart-of Dulverton] , Grace Anna [ married James Collier Knowlman . Cove. Tiverton]
Thomas's son James came to Australia in the 1840s or 50s.
Hoping to make contact with any descendants. Thanks

Somerset Completed Lookup Requests / James Hill--from Upton--was he a convict?
« on: Thursday 01 March 07 01:09 GMT (UK)  »
 Hi,
I am led to believe that my gr gr grandfather, James Frederick Hill[ son of Thomas and Jane Hill], was sent to Australia as a ticket-of-leave convict, [ his crime was poaching] in the late 1840s 0r 1850s. He lived at Upton, on a farm called 'Upton Farm'[ in the Brendon Hills ].
If this story has any truth, where would he be likely to have been tried and sentenced for his crime. any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

« on: Sunday 15 January 06 10:32 GMT (UK)  »
I would appreciate any help by a volunteer to look up any records which might prove that James Frederick Hill was sent to Australia as a convict, or exile. He was  born at Upton, Somerset, 1830, [father Thomas Hill, mother Jane[nee Harding]He was married in Australia in 1855,so would have been sent here before that time.
Thank you.
