Europe / France, Paris, 1732 death/will
« on: Tuesday 05 October 21 22:32 BST (UK)  »
I hope someone can help me.

I have found an Irish newspaper report dated 28th Dec 1732 stating that a Charles Theophrastus D'Assigny had died in Paris and left his "real and personal estate, which is considerable" to heirs in England or Jersey.

I have 2 quests -
1. How would I start looking for this Charles? I know who his heirs were, but not how they relate to him (and I don't know what they did with the money!). If Charles had a considerable fortune, including real estate, what documents could I search to possibly find him? Would a will still exist?

2. The heirs were Protestants and minsters in the Church of England. Would this indicate that Charles was also a Protestant, bearing in mind that France was a Catholic country? Would there have been legal objections to such a will from the French authorities?

Thank you.

The Common Room / Laying out the dead
« on: Thursday 11 June 20 16:57 BST (UK)  »
My great grandmother was one of the local women who would wash and lay out the body of the deceased. Is there a technical term for this job? She was not attached to any funeral directors; it was a traditional thing to do. She was also the local (unofficial) midwife.

Census and Resource Discussion / Help with 1891 annotations
« on: Tuesday 31 March 20 12:11 BST (UK)  »
Hello. I hope someone can explain this for me.

I am researching John Harewood who was born 21st Oct 1878 at Warley, near Halifax, Yorkshire.
He was part of a large family and can be easily found in the 1881, 1891, 1901, 1911 and 1939 Censuses.

My query is about the 1891 Census where his age is given as 9, when in fact he was 12. I know that mistakes like this are fairly, but I am curious as to why someone has underlined and circled his age and put a cross at the end of the row.

Was this done by someone at the time to draw attention to the error, and if so, why didn't they correct it? Or is there another reason why his age was underlined and circled?

Midlothian / McAndrews of Edinburgh
« on: Tuesday 03 March 20 00:47 GMT (UK)  »
I am hoping some kind Root-chatter can help me with this.

My great grandmother was Ellen Cornish, born in 1876 in Exeter, Devon. She appears in Exeter in the 1881 and 1891 Censuses, married in Exeter in 1903 and lived in Topshan, Devon until she died in 1958.

However, people who knew her have told me that before she married she was a Lady's Companion to a Miss McAndrew, and lived in Atholl Crescent, Edinburgh. I would love to know more about her life there, how she got to be so far from her home, and what happened to Miss McAndrew for Ellen to leave her service. Did her lady die or get married, or was Ellen Cornish only hired for a set period or dismissed?

Does anyone know if there was a McAndrew family living in Atholl Crescent, Edinburgh in the 1890s or early 1900s? If I can get some context it will help fill out the possibilities.

Thank you in advance.

The Common Room / Poplar gown?
« on: Saturday 10 August 19 16:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi.

In 1773 one of my ancestors was bequeathed "a guinea and my poplar gown" by her sister (who was in her mid-60s at the time). Both ladies lived in Somerset. I know what a guinea was, bt what was a poplar gown, and what did it look like? Does the name refer to the colour, the fashion/material, or the place it was made? Thanks in advance.

Occupation Interests / What did a Herbalist do?
« on: Saturday 02 March 19 22:49 GMT (UK)  »
I have an ancestor, William Margrie (c.1775-1850), who is listed as a Herbalist in the 1848 Hunt & Co. Directory for Exeter & Bristol.  His son, Robert Margrie (1800-1872), appeared in the 1851, 1861 and 1871 Censuses also as a Herbalist.

William died in 1850, and prior to that (1821-1841) Robert Margrie  appears as a labourer, I assume Robert somehow took over his father's trade. William started his early life as a sawyer. I have not found him in the 1841 Census.

What was a Herbalist, and what market did he serve? It is listed separate from a chemist or druggist, and seems a rare occupation in the census/directories (there is only one occurrence in the 1848 Directory, and only 9 others in the 1851 Census + 4 Herbal Doctors).

The Common Room / 1841 Census household order
« on: Saturday 02 March 19 20:03 GMT (UK)  »
The 1841 Census can be quite frustrating at times due to the lack of information it contains compared to the later censuses. Happy though I am to have what we have, and fully aware that the Census just gives us a snapshot of 'one night in the life of our ancestors', I wondered if there were any more ways to squeeze out an extra inference or two?

I always assumed the name order was head of the household first, followed by any spouse, children, other family, then servants and boarders. But were there any guidelines given out at the time of enumeration? Do boarders/lodgers come before servants? Was the 'head of the house' the chief income earner, or the one legally responsible for the bills? Were permanent residents listed before temporary visitors? Or is it all pot-luck?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Bristol birth places
« on: Monday 18 February 19 23:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hello All,

I'm looking for help in reading where my Bristolian ancestors were born. The extract is from the 1851 Census for Penn Street, St.Peter's, Bristol. The head of the household, Charles Lodge, was born Bristol - but what does the insertion say? His wife was born Bristol St.James, and his daughter at Bristol Mary Redcliff. But where was the eldest son born? The youngest was born Bristol St John.

A fresh pair of eyes would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
