Warwickshire / Birthplace Census records
« on: Thursday 07 April 22 01:52 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I have an ancestor on the 1901 census born Birmingham Warwickshire and in the 1911 census born Oldbury Worcestershire. I am 95% sure it’s the same person but can’t reconcile the difference in birthplaces. Can anyone shed some light? Thanks!

The Common Room / French Shipwreck 1859
« on: Wednesday 03 October 18 18:54 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I'm hoping someone can help me find information on a ship named the Olinda. From a  Hampshire Telegraph newspaper article, she was wrecked off the Sussex coast sometime in late 1859. My interest is that my 4x great uncle is mentioned in the article as having in his possession a necktie (wrapped around some coins) that had been found with a body, presumed to have been from the Olinda. The body was found washed ashore in Chichester harbour and my uncle had a pub nearby called the Dog and Duck. I can't find any record of a French ship Olinda. Any help would be appreciated!

The Common Room / Jackson brick wall

Hi all, fairly new here and hoping for help with my g grandfather, dob 25 Oct 1898, Manchester Eng. He had two brothers, George and Albert (and possibly other siblings). No idea what parents' names were. Married in Sept 1929 to Frances Thompson in Manchester. I found their marriage index but no m/c where I might find parents' names. I've combed through so many census records but without parents it's a wild goose chase. Before I order the m/c, would anyone have any other ideas where to look? He was in the Royal Navy, service number J35694. Thank you in advance  :)

Hello, I'm having a hard time finding family members in the 1911 census.

Charles Wesley Farrington (b. abt 1837 ON) and wife Jane Elizabeth (b. abt 1858 England), son Norman (b. 1905 ON). They were living in Belleville or Kingston Ontario. Charles was a mariner.

George Hale (b. 1875 ON) and wife Ethel/Edith May (b. abt 1882 ON)
children (all born ON): Wilma Mary 1909
                                    Wanda Ileene 1907
                                    Wesley William 1905

They would have been living in Belleville Ontario at the time. Father George was a butcher.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The Common Room / Mariners in England
« on: Saturday 24 June 17 02:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi all - question regarding Royal Navy vs Merchant Mariner. My 4x gr grandfather indicated "mariner" on the 1841 England census. I don't know his exact dob, but have a possible Royal Navy record from 1831 that could be him. Would "mariner" imply merchant mariner? Would one have gone from navy to the merchant shipping business? Thanks for your help :)

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Portsea Island Marriage Record
« on: Saturday 13 May 17 16:21 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone, I'm new here - so hello  :) I am looking for a marriage record for my 3x great grandfather ALEXANDER ROWE. He married MARY VALLER on May 15, 1838 in the St Mary's church on Portsea Island. I have the record on Ancestry but can't see their ages nor the names of the fathers (that info was not transcribed). Can anyone help? I've searched everywhere... Thank you!
