Perthshire / James MILLER again (Auchterarder, Perthshire)
« on: Wednesday 14 June 17 13:33 BST (UK)  »
James Miller was born 19/10/1859 in Auchterarder, Perthshire. His birth certificate states that he is illegitimate and his name is James STEIN. I have found his mother (Margaret Stein) but can find no reason why his birth certificate has him as Stein but on the 1861 census he is named as James Miller. When he got married to Catherine Jones in 1893 he named his father as James Miller (deceased).

In the 1880's he moved with his mother, step father and half siblings to Liverpool. In 1901 he was with his wife and children (Margaret, Helen, Anthony, Lillie and Rose) and I have him in 1911 back living with his mother and grandmother. Catherine was in the workhouse in Liverpool on the 1911 census and the children were split up. My GF was in another workhouse in 1911, aged 5. Little wonder that he turned out to be a nasty piece of work.

So, I have 2 issues that I really need help with. I have been struggling with these now for more than a week. If anyone can provide me with pointers I will be very grateful.

1) Who was James Miller, the father of my GGF, who must have been in Perthshire in 1860, and probably in Auchterarder as my GGGM was a farm servant and presumably didn't travel far

2) When and were did James Miller die. I would love to know why the family split up, but that seems a far stretch to discover unless someone on this forum is a distant relative and knows the family history that was never discusses in my family

I am rather new to all of this, thanks for those who have replied already. I have added more information at the end of the post to show how far I have got. What I would like to be able to do is pinpoint his death and see if I have bought the right certificate. Then I want to see why and how the family dispersed.

Dear All, I have hit a dead end with my Great Grandfather, James Miller. In 1901 he was living with his wife, Catha(e)rine and their children, including my grandfather Anthony and twin 1 month old daughters, Rose and Lillie. In 1911 the whole family was dispersed and his wife was in the workhouse and Anthony was in another in Fazakerley. The twins died in 1901. Can anyone please help me to sort out this mess???? I bought the death certificate of a James Miller, but now I am not sure it is him. My GF joined the merchant navy when he was way underage, he lied about his age. Eventually he became a doorman at the Adelphi and committed suicide in 1958. A very troubled man, but hardly surprising given his start in life.

I have added more detailed information - please look at the end of the post

Hello All, I am rather new to this and have hit a dead end with my great grandfather, James Miller. In Liverpool in 1901 he was living with his wife, Catha(e)rine, lots of children (including 1 month old twin daughters) and in 1911 the twins were dead (died 1901), his son Anthony (my GF) was in a workhouse and his wife was in another workhouse where she says she is a widow. I have bought the death certificate of a James Miller who died in 1901, but I am no further forward. The only birth for a James Miller in the right timeframe is July 1860 in Auchtergaven, Perth where the father's name is given as George Miller and the mother Betsy Bell. When James married my GG Grandmother he gave his father's name as James. Another James Miller of the right age turns up in other census results, living as an apprentice with Walker and Margaret Scott. No mention of parents. I am absolutely baffled. If anyone can help me shine a light on this I will be very grateful.

Family History Beginners Board / Robert N Miller - death WW2
« on: Monday 29 May 17 16:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi All, I am trying to find details of my uncle. He died, according to family tales, during WW2 when he was on his way back to the front after home leave. My Dad said it was a troop train that was bombed. I have found his death - September 1943. He died in hospital so the bomb may have been earlier. His name was Robert N. Miller. I have an idea at the back of my mind that the N was for Newton, but I have no idea if that is true or not. Also, his will was done in Llandudno. I have no idea why when he was living, I think, in Liverpool. Anyone know how to investigate this further?

Lancashire Lookup Requests / George William Harding, Liverpool
« on: Wednesday 17 May 17 12:34 BST (UK)  »
Dear All, this is the first time that I have posted here. I have just started looking into my family history, having ordered my father's birth certificate My father is dead and he knew little of his family history as he hated his father, who committed suicide in 1958. I found his mother's name and it has gone mad since then as I am so intrigued by what I have learned. GW Harding was born on the Isle of Man in 1844, had 5 children with his wife Mary (born Wells) and when she died he married my great great grandmother. Her name was Ellen. I think she must have been born McCloud or some variant of that name but I can find nothing about her anywhere. They were married in 1878 in West Derby. According to the censuses she was born in 1861/2 in Ireland. Has anyone researched her and got more information please?
