Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Prison Admission 1830
« on: Friday 03 May 19 21:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm struggling to understand what is written in this prison admission for one of my ancestors.

The first is his complexion, it seems swarthy was crossed out and replaced with another word that I am unsure of.

Secondly, something about the right side of his forehead, a laceration maybe?

Thank you in advance.

Family History Beginners Board / No Father? William Thomas Hurley
« on: Friday 07 September 18 22:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi!

I've come across a marriage certificate for William Thomas Earley. However, in the section for the Father's name, it is left blank.

I then checked Lancashire BMD for his birth to find out his Mother's maiden name but it came up Earley for Mother's maiden name too.

Please could you point me in the right direction as to where to look next? How can I find more about the Mother? Doubtful I will ever know anything about his Father.

I have noticed that sometimes he is listed as William Thomas Hurley. (Though this was around 1900)

He becomes a patient as Prestwich Asylum in his later years.

William Thomas Hurley
b. 1862 Manchester
d. 1916 Manchester

Any advice would be great... thanks!

I have a some photos of an ancestor who spent most of his life in and out of prison. I have a couple which I would like to have touched up with colour please.

In his description on the prison records it is noted that he had a dark complexion and hazel eyes. He also had dark brown hair in his younger years.

Thanks in advance!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help With Occupations, Please
« on: Monday 24 July 17 08:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I'm struggling to understand the writing for two occupations.

Pretty sure the first one is 'horse' something and the second 'cart' something but just can't figure them out.

Thank you!

Hi everyone.

I posted a photo over the weekend and everyone was so helpful. It was suggested I came here for some help in finding my  great great great Grandma. I'm new to this and perhaps Im looking in all the wrong places, but it seems I've hit a brick wall.

Elizabeth Toohey was a British Subject born in America around 1841. I have records of her in the 1881 census. At this time she was living in Bollington, Cheshire.

She had at least 6 children that I know of, born in Bermuda, India, Ireland and England. Her husband Bernard Toohey (sometimes with the spelling Tuohy) was a sergeant with the 39th regiment and so was travelling all over.

Bernard Toohey born around 1836 in Galway, Ireland.
Elizabeth Toohey Born around 1841 - I dont know her maiden name. British subject in America.

I can't find a marriage certificate for them and I'm struggling to find a birth certificate for their son too - John Henry Toohey who was born in Bermuda in 1861. I have found some birth certificates of their other children born in India. I'm guessing  the marriage was in Bermuda as Bernard was based there between 1859 and 1864.

Would it have been normal for wives to have traveled on ships with their husbands? It seems that was the case for Elizabeth as she had her children in the places where Bernard was based.

Elizabeth is such a mystery as I cant find any record of her death, birth or marriage. So I'd be so grateful for all your help. As I say I'm new to this so I'm probably not searching as good as I could be.

Hi,

Please could you tell me the place which is written in the 'Dated at' section.

Also, in the 'Complexion" section  does it say Fair? just a spelling mistake there?

Thanks!

Hi!
I'm new here. What an amazing forum, I can't wait to have a good read of all the posts. I recently started doing some family research after finding a box of old photographs and birth/marriage certificates.
There is one photo in particular I'd like your help with if possible?

I'd love to know roughly when it would have been taken?

Also, any ideas of what age the lady could be? We know she married late on, so wondering if this child is hers or not? Would it be unusual for someone to pose with a niece/nephew, or would it only be done with their own child? Is there much resemblance between the two in your opinions?

Is there any particular reason for a photo like this to be taken? Would it have been sent to anyone in particular? or was it common practice?

Her father was born in Bermuda as we know her Grandfather was an army officer based there at the time, but we are unsure of her Grandmothers ethnicity. Does she appear to have darker skin?

I love this photo and I'd love to know as much as possible about Ellen and the child.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Catherine.
