Europe / Translation Dutch
« on: Monday 14 August 23 18:00 BST (UK)  »
We have been researching Jewish ancestors in Holland.  we have access to the marriage records which are fantastic but are struggling to read some of them.  Some can be managed using the old favourite google translate but we are struggling with this record.  Is there anyone who is able to read this record from 1660 for us?

Thank you

Claire

South Africa / Jewish Family - South Africa
« on: Wednesday 17 February 21 12:44 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help us please?  We are trying to tie up some loose ends with a branch of the family who went out to South Africa.  John Isidore Zane can be found on the passenger records travelling to S Africa in 1940 and we are told he married in Moira Rosenberg in 1943.  We can find evidence of Moira's parents but nothing about his marriage.  We have a photo showing the marriage which we believe is outside the synagogue in Johannesburg.  We know that they returned to the UK in the early 1960's.  John Isidore and Moira had 3 son's Clive, David and Jeffrey.  we have evidence of John Isidore's parents going out to visit them in 1947 and 1950.

Any help about where to look to complete picture with marriage records and birth records would be gratefully received.  We have tried family search and this is where we have found the info re Moira's family and the can see there are some court documents in the south African archives but don't know how to go about asking for any further info.

Europe / French Records
« on: Sunday 06 September 20 16:47 BST (UK)  »
We are trying to trace parts of our family who emigrated to France.
Firstly we have an Uncle who was born in the UK in London in 1904.  His name was Victor Sampson although the rest of the family did not have the P in the spelling.  At some point he married a lady called Rosette Kamenschtikof who was from Paris.  we have no idea where they married although the assumption has always been they married in Paris.  The first child was born June 1928 (Milly) in Paris,  She told us that date but we have no records.  Then there was Georges Jacob in 1929 and we have his death record which was 1972.  Then there was a male child who died within days of birth in 1931 and a girl called Liliane in 1934 who died in 1934 but again no records for either of these.

We cannot find Victor's death which was the Dec 14th 1979.  We know this from the obituary in the Jewish press and his daughter Milly told us he committed suicide.

The family supposedly came to the UK circa 1941 and Victor allegedly served in the forces and was sent Dieppe as a translator.   The children are rumoured to have lived with grandparents in London but also rumoured to have been sent to Scotland.

We have Rosette's death in 2000 from My Heritage.

we would very much like to clarify the myth and the rumour surrounding this part of the family and any support that anyone has out there would be gratefully received.

Please can someone help date this cabinet card.  The couple are Jewish which gives some information about the background of the people.  It is likely that they came from Lithuania, probably Vilnius.  we don't have any evidence that they were in the UK, London to be precise,  and so as much info about these cards as we can glean would be helpful as they are subject to family debate as to who they are!!

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Polish passports
« on: Friday 02 June 17 23:24 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know if there is a database of passports issued by polish authorities from 1880 to 1920? I found a passport number included on naturalization documents in the national archives but am struggling to find my ancestor in any records available for his home.
For interest his name was Dov Ber Zanarotsky born C1872.  Place of birth Swir, Vilnius.  The surname could be derived from something else so any pointers would be great.
