Stirlingshire / Look up needed for a James Thomson a wright in Denny Sterlingshire
« on: Monday 21 September 09 11:52 BST (UK)  »
I need help. I am begging for a MI look up PLEASE ;D. Can someone find a James Thomson, buried in Denny, Sterlingshire, sometime before 1825 for me?

I have found on Scottish census, Isobel Tait (ms Thomson,) b 1806c Denny Sterlingshire Scotland. I can't find a Bapt record for her, so this date is still a circa. From her marriage OPR in 1824, Edinburgh, I know Isobel was the daughter of a James Thomson (deceased) occupation, a wright in Denny.  From her death cert, her parents' names were given as ------- Thomson and Jane Mathie.

I can find nothing on this James Thomson and Jane/Jean Mathie. Having checked all Thomson children, b in Denny from 1750 -1810 on SP, I began to wonder if the surname Mathie, was given by mistake, on the death cert. I have found one couple having children in the correct period in Denny....a James Thomson and Jean Boag (all variants on the Boag.) Having followed several of their children, I know this James Thomson was a shoemaker, not a wright. So, I am still looking at an ugly brick wall. I am wondering if some kind person has a book of MIs for Denny and would check if they can find a James Thomson, buried with Jane/Jean (Mathie) please.

There is a skeleton in the family wardrobe here, if I can ever sort it out.
I am trying to find information on my GGGGrandfather and his family.... James Hodgson b1783c, was a brick maker. He died 27 Oct 1851 in Ribbleton Lane, Preston. Joseph Hodgson from Mill Street Preston, was present at his death. I think Joseph was James' son. I can't trace James in 1841 or 51 censuses. I found James' name and occupation on my GGGrandmother's Alice Hodgson's b1805 Preston and William Wrennall marriage cert. They married late in life in 1864 at St Wilfrid Church Preston, after having lived together for over 23 years. From all this, I think Alice and Joseph are siblings. I think I have found their mother is probably an Ann Fisher. The only possibility I have found on LDS, to match all these details.
Alice Hodgson above, had 3 children. In the 1841 census, she was living as a widow, working for William Wrennall married, a butcher. As I have said, she went on to marry William. Her children all had her Hodgson surname, leading me to the conclusion they were illegitimate. They were baptized in St John Preston, only mother's name given. Richard Hodgson b1836, John Hodgson b1839 and My GGrandmother Betsy Hodgson (Elizabeth) b1840. Alice may have given widow as her status in the 1841.... But on her marriage to William the butcher, she was a spinster! Giving further evidence to her children having been illegitimate.
My GGrandmother Elizabeth Hodgson (above b1840,) married Richard Forshaw using the surname Reynolds (a variant of Wrennall) in 1858, at St John Preston. She also named William Reynolds (Wrennall) the butcher as her father. So I am uncertain at present if William was really her birthfather or stepfather.
Quite a puzzle to sort out. I can only conclude James Hodgson's daughter, Alice Hodgson, was an unmarried mother when she met William or the children were William Wrennall's but he couldn't marry Alice, because he was already married. He went on to marry Alice after they had lived together for over 23 years, when his 1st wife died. I don't know if I will ever find out exactly what occurred. I would love to hear from anyone with these names in their tree.

Occupation Interests / Richard Forshaw sailor in Hesketh Banks
« on: Tuesday 09 May 06 20:29 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,
I have a Richard Forshaw born in1836c Hesketh Banks Lancs. He married Elizabeth Hodgson/Reynolds in 1858 in Preston, This Richard later became a brewer. I found on his marriage cert' Richard's father was also a Richard Forshaw a sailor. I have been unable to find either of these Richard Forshaws in the 41, 51 or 61 censuses. I now wonder if they could have been at sea, or in port on a vessel. Any ideas how I can find them?

Berwickshire / John Haig and Agnes Hall in Duns
« on: Sunday 22 January 06 17:21 GMT (UK)  »
Help!!!I have been following John Haigs of John Haig, from Duns. In my husbands family, it seems to have been a family tradition, for John Haig to named their first son John, as far back as this, until present day.
John Haig b 1796 Duns, married to Grace White b1812 Ayton. He was a farmer in Chirnside according to his will.  I have just found in his death cert' he died 31 Aug 1856 on Murray St, I presume Duns because it was registered there. Does this street still exist?  According to the certificate he was buried in Preston.
His Parents were John Haig 1751-1801 and Agnes Hall 1756-1840. I have managed to find a Marriage for this couple 15/5/1795 in Swinton and Simprim but nothing further for Agnes. John was a tennant at Broomhill. Does anybody know anything about Agnes? I know they lived in Duns. I haven't been able to find a birth for this John Haig there? I think his parents are John Haig and Alison Miller.
Since posting this I have found an MI in Preston & Buncle graveyard. All those above are buried in the same grave. The grave started with John Haig b 1715. He is the father of John Haig b1757. Unfortunately the wife of the first John Haig is not buried there. I believe she could be Agnes Millar does anyone have them in their tree or have anything on them?
Thanks
Pam
