Carmarthenshire / Gwendraeth Hotel Burry Port

I believe the Gwendraeth Hotel pictured was in Burry Port in 1936  but does anyone know where?

Some time ago I bought some old photograph albums, and having finally gone through them came across one for what appears to be a Bretherick family from Malton, Yorkshire. The photos are on cards that show they were taken in Scarborough, Gravesend, Aylesbury, Hammersmith, York and Malton.

One of the photos has written on the back 'Mary E Bretherick Xmas 1904'. Taken in Malton.

Another appears to be a photo of Wilson/William Rayner Bretherick, who was a stationmaster at Fimber at one time. He married Charlotte Lucy Goodwin in Gravesend in 1903.

I would be happy to restore the photos to the direct family (the beautiful leather bound album has fallen apart unfortunately) if any would like to contact me.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Advice needed on taking DNA tests
« on: Monday 03 June 19 14:54 BST (UK)  »
My mother is very interested in taking a DNA test - she apparently knows people who have found long lost cousins through DNA testing and is convinced, despite everything I tell her, that she will do the same. She has never been online in her life and has no idea what is involved, so everything will have to be managed by me. And I have never had any interest in DNA testing so need some advice on the best way to proceed.

For example, there are so many companies doing testing - are any better than the others? Does it really matter who you take the test with?

Apart from the DNA test itself, what are the costs involved? How long before you get something back so you can start looking at the results? What do you get back? I expect to have to resubscribe to Ancestry or some other site. I know you can upload the results to a number of sites, do you have to subscribe to them all to get matches? I assume you have to upload your tree at each site you use. Are some sites better than others or are they all likely to give the same results? Do they all supply the same tools?

I know everyone will have different opinions depending on their own experiences, so I am not looking for a definitive answer, just some suggestions on a reasonable way forward that won't cost me an arm and a leg but won't leave me feeling that if I had done something else I might have had more success.

If the answer is that it doesn't matter which company you use or what tests you get done the chance of success is the same I will be very happy with that  ;D

Carmarthenshire / Burry Port Gondoliers
« on: Wednesday 13 December 17 21:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone. I recently found out that my grandfather was the drummer and leader of a jazz band called the "Burry Port Gondoliers". Bit of a surprise to me as I never knew he was the least bit musical. This would have been in the 1940s-1950s I think, probably after he left the army.

So far I can't find any reference to them anywhere - I can't imagine they did more than play in various fetes around the Burry Port area but I would like to know more.

My searches so far have brought up nothing, so I wondered if anyone else with family in the area might have heard of them?

Fingers crossed  :)

World War One / Is it possible to identify this uniform please?
« on: Sunday 26 November 17 18:31 GMT (UK)  »
The attached pic is of someone I believe to be David Thomas, who married Minnie Lewis in about 1912. The pic is only marked as 'Minnie and first husband', so she obviously remarried at some time. The photo is very small and a bit watermarked, and I couldn't enlarge it much without losing some of the features, so I don't expect it to be possible to identify much about the uniform.

All I know is that she is my mother's great aunt, she lived in Carmarthen in South Wales so he probably did too. It may therefore be a Welsh regiment.

Ooops... that's a bit bigger than I expected !

World War One / Where do I find service records for the Royal Scots Territorials please?
« on: Saturday 09 September 17 18:39 BST (UK)  »
I have just found out that my ggrandfather served as a sergeant with the 2/5th Royal Scots Territorials. I don't have any other information such as service numbers but would like to find out about his service history. Are details of the Territorials dealt with the same as regular army?

Thanks for any help.
