Family History Beginners Board / Help finding living family members?
« on: Wednesday 21 February 18 15:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,

My mother bought a box of books at an auction and inside was a beautiful large bible that the owners had recorded marriages and births into. I won't post the births here as they were as recent as they were all born in the 1960's, which is recent.

The only information i have on the marriages is the following:

Miss Elsie Roberta(?) Carter
Mr Anthony James williams

Married 1st September 1959

I seemed to have found the marriage register records on ancestry which says they were married in Wandsworth, Surrey. I also found all the children mentioned in the book on ancestry.

I built a small (and private) tree with their names in the hopes of finding a public member tree that shared them in case I found a family member. However, it seems not one has popped up.

Can anyone help my find any living relatives of this family so that I may return this beautiful book to them?

Family History Beginners Board / Please help me find Martha Locke!
« on: Thursday 09 November 17 08:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

You all helped me with this previously a few months ago. Martha Locke is a distant direct relative of mine whom was quite a mysterious person. She claimed her only child, Ellen, was an illegitimate child of a 'Lord Ashton' whom she was a servant for.
This story went down for many years and I set out to prove once and for all whether it was true, or simply words of a woman fantasizing.

With a lot of assistance from you lovely members of Roots Chat, we discovered that she was indeed a servant for a number of years, including in the 1891 census. One of you found an article from 1892 of her being in a carriage incident with the same family she worked for in the 1891 census. She then appears to have moved on. Another article we believe relating to her shows a Martha Locke/Lock who was arrested for stealing clothes from a family she was a servant for in Manchester.

After that, she completely disappears until the 1901 census, where she is found in a workhouse in her homeland, Worcestershire. There she resides with a baby, Ellen.

What we know beyond that is she married a man with the surname Nash and he took Ellen on as his own, but Martha always told her about how her real father was a Lord Ashton who sent her to the workhouse.

Now, I found it interesting that she was sent to a Worcestershire-located workhouse rather than Manchester as I would have thought her employers would have sent her to the nearest one to have her illegitimate child. This made us consider that perhaps the reason she was sent so far away was because the child was indeed that of a lord's child. However, we have no proof of this.

I know that there was a Thomas Gair Ashton that was located in Manchester at one point. Also, dare I say it, my grandfather looks VERY much like him. If this is to be true, Thomas Gair Ashton would have been his grandfather.

The problem is, I can't find Martha in between 1896 and 1901. I need some sort of proof she did indeed work for a 'Lord Ashton'. Someone suggested finding employment records underneath Thomas Gair Ashton, but I just don't know where to look.

Can any of you help me once more?

Thanks,
AbbieRose

Family History Beginners Board / Where is Robert Aldridges family?
« on: Wednesday 08 November 17 09:16 GMT (UK)  »
I'm researching into a family tree for my friend and have hit a wall pretty early on! His mother's side was easy enough to research into, but his father's side has been a long battle.

We have only got as far as Robert James Aldridge, who was born in 1923 in Norfolk,UK. All we know is his mother's surname is possibly Constable. Other than that, his family is a complete mystery. It's driving me mad! Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Family History Beginners Board / George William Archibald Nixon - Help Find Him
« on: Saturday 05 August 17 13:05 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for a friend on his family tree and we have come across a man who seems to be a phantom. All I can find is that 'George William Archibald Nixon' was born in 1908, married twice (once in 1930 and once in 1947).
My friend is led to believe that he was in the RAF during the second world war, but I cannot find any record of this.
Ultimately, this is to find out who his parents were to continue looking back, but any info on hm other than what we know might be interesting too.

Thanks

I have been researching into my mothers side of the family for a long time. She was very close with her father and was interested in know more about the family name. My grandfather's grandmother, a lady named Martha Locke, was a mysterious person in ways and she had quite the story about her young life.

It was claimed she worked as a servant most of her young adult life. She told her daughter that she worked as a servant to a 'Lord Ashton' before she was sent to the workhouse to give birth to her unexpected child, Ellen, my grandfather's mother.

I discovered throughout my research that this story was in fact mostly true. In an 1891 census, she was recorded as a living-in servant to a Stoke family alongside two other servants. Then in a 1901 census, she was recorded as a 'pauper' living in a workhouse in her home county and her newborn daughter was also in the 1901 census record. This means, so far, her story is true.
We are curious as to who 'Lord Ashton' was and if she really did work for one, but we cannot find any record of it. The 1891 census seems to show her working for another family and the 1901 census just catches her in the workhousr to have her baby. So censuses are out of the question. Are there any records at all that would give me an answer? We really want to find proof that her story is true and find out who the Lord Ashton was.

Please Help!
