Aberdeenshire / John Scott & Barbara Johnston
« on: Friday 02 October 20 16:09 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to work out whether my 5th great grandfather could have had Irish roots. I am putting this in the Aberdeenshire area because he married one Barbara Johnston in Aberdeen on November 15 1773, and other than him being born in 1750 and a sailor, that is basically all I know and have been able to find.

Can anyone help?

Aberdeenshire / Jeanette Clark Scott
« on: Tuesday 15 September 20 14:56 BST (UK)  »
My mother recently got DNA results that have thrown up the possibility of distant cousins in Nebraska, descended from one Jeanette Clark Scott.

Jeanette is apparently the sister of my great great grandfather, William Watt Scott, born in Tyrie Mains in 1838.

Problem is, I can't find any record of her. Can anyone help?

If she is William Watt Scott's sister then her parents were William Scott (1811-1883) and Janet Watt (1810-1882).

Aberdeenshire / William Robb
« on: Friday 19 June 20 16:09 BST (UK)  »
I have been doing a fair amount of digging into the parents of my great grandmother, Joan Robb Ogston (1873-1953).

Just today I discovered a couple of corrections to her birth record, which establish her father as being one William Robb.

From what I can put surmise William Robb had at least one tryst with Elizabeth Ogston in 1872, in New Pitsligo as that is where Joan was born.

By 1874 he had moved on to Strichen, as that is the first record of a correction. The second correction is from 1876 at which point he is living in Crimond.

As far as I am aware, Elizabeth and William never married.

Any thoughts on how to pin down William's parents/family, and learn more about him?

Australia / Scots Cronies - Lewis Beddie Scott
« on: Wednesday 26 February 20 16:12 GMT (UK)  »
My grandfather, Lewis Beddie Scott (1909-1978), emigrated out to Australia in the 1960s, settling in Adelaide.

He was heavily involved in the Scots Cronies Club of Australia, including being the editor of their newsletter, The Clachan Collection.

I have only been able to locate a couple of issues of the Collection, and not been able to find out more about the Cronies, can anyone help?

Canada / Death in Canada?
« on: Friday 17 January 20 18:48 GMT (UK)  »
In researching my 3xgreat-grandmother Eliza Moyes I discovered that her father seems to have died in Canada.

Her father was George Moyes, a stonemason, born in 1822 in North Moulton, Devon, and his father was John Moyes. In 1845 George was living in St Helier, Jersey, and married Elizabeth Hill (b.1824), they had 2 daughters, Eliza (b.1848) and Celia (b.1857), who was born in Upper Canada.

In the 1871 Channel Island census, Elizabeth and the daughters are back living on Jersey, but no sign of George. Also, just for interest, boarding at the same house as Celia is one John Reese, my 3xgreat grandfather, who had recently retired from the Army, having most recently been stationed in.....Canada.

Can anyone help fill in the blanks as to what happened to George, and if possible who his mother was?

Kent / Mary Fowell BENOIST
« on: Friday 24 May 19 19:57 BST (UK)  »
So I have run into something of a brick wall.

Mary is my 4x great grandmother and something of an enigma.

From trees I have seen she was born in 1820, but I recently found a record of a woman with the same name marrying in Lee, Kent in 1831. I am making the assuming here that the name Mary Fowell Benoist is not exactly a common name.

She married Richard Thompson, and they had a son, Richard James Benoist Thompson in 1834.

Can anyone clear up the year of her birth, and her parents?

Aberdeenshire / Allen Farquhar
« on: Wednesday 14 November 18 18:32 GMT (UK)  »
I am digging into my wife's ancestry and she also has folk from Aberdeenshire in her tree, one Allen Farquhar.

From what I have been able to ascertain he was born in Aberdeenshire in 1681, got married to Susanna Patterson in Raphoe, Ulster in 1703 before migrating to Maryland, where he died in 1738.

They had at least one son, also called Allen, born in Ulster in 1719.

In particular I am trying to get back beyond Allen senior, and see where in Aberdeenshire his roots were.

Somerset / CHANT Family - West Chinnock, Somerset
« on: Thursday 31 May 18 20:23 BST (UK)  »
I have traced the CHANT/CHAUNT line of my family back to one William Chaunt who was born in 1563, died in 1614, and was married to one Alice White. He is my 12 x great grandfather, but I am wondering if anyone has been able to get back beyond the 16th century?

Aberdeenshire / SCOTT Family - Fraserburgh
« on: Wednesday 11 April 18 19:51 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for information about the family of Alexander Scott and his wife Joan Robb Ogston.

I know that they had 7 sons:
  • Alexander
  • John
  • Lewis (1909-1978) married Mary Cassie - my grandfather
  • William
  • James
  • Charles
  • Gordon
I don't know much about my great uncles beyond the bits and pieces my mother has told me, if anyone has information about them, or is descended from them, I would love to know.

One question, is this Gordon Scott the same Gordon Scott as played for Fraserburgh FC at the same time as my grandfather?
