Kent / William IDDENDEN b1840 Wye Kent
« on: Monday 08 August 22 17:15 BST (UK)  »
Hello Everyone, looking for a little bit of help please. I am researching a friend's family tree and I have hit a brick wall.
William Iddenden bc1840 in Wye, parents Henry and Sarah. I have found him on 1841 and 1851 census living at home.
In 1881 I believe he gets married to Mary Ann Susan Bundock b1862 and has 13 children (info taken from 1911 census)
I can't find him on the 1861,1871 and 1881 census.
I did find a newspaper article (1903) referring to a William Iddenden having 22 children in Herne Bay, which would be the correct location.
It is possible that he could have been married before, but I just don't know.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Thanks very much,
Carrie xx

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Sarah OVEREND, Hemingbrough
« on: Sunday 02 May 21 13:50 BST (UK)  »
Good Afternoon everyone, hope you are all well  :)

I appear to have hit a massive brick wall.... I am trying to find a mention anywhere of the birth of a lady named Sarah Overend. She married a man named Christopher Slater (who I'm also unable to trace) from Wakefield, described as a gentleman in the parish register. They married, by licence, in Hemingbrough on 20th July 1801. The couple went on to have just 2 children: John Christopher Slater b1802 and Henry Overend Slater b1805.

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated,

Thank you, Carrie xx

Durham / Robert FOSTER b1812 Tocketts and Ann ? b 1822 Aycliffe
« on: Sunday 08 November 20 15:27 GMT (UK)  »
Good Afternoon everyone,

I am starting to tie myself in knots looking for a marriage or possibly two!!!!! I span two counties: Durham and Yorkshire.
I am looking for a marriage between a Robert Foster born 1812 in Tocketts Yorkshire and an Ann (surname possibly Nelson)
I have 11 children for the couple, but I have a feeling that the eldest 2 may have a different mother.

So here is what I have Robert Foster was a miller born in Tocketts, Yorkshire in 1812. On all the census he is down as having a wife called Ann possibly born around 1822 in Aycliffe Durham.
In 1841 there is 1 child Thomas bc1836.
In 1851 there were 4 children Thomas b Guisborough, John bc 1841 Middlesbrough, Richard Foster and Benjamin Foster both 2 bc1849 Aycliffe Durham.
In 1861 there were 6 children mentioned, Benjamin age 12 b Aycliffe, Robert age 9 b 1851 Stockton, Ann E age 7 b 1854 Stockton, Henry age 6 b 1855 Stockton, Alice age 4 b 1857Thirsk and Thomas age 2 b 1859 Thirsk.
In 1871 four children are named, Henry b Stockton, Thomas b Thirsk and a Mary b Darlington and a William b Stokesley.

Having searched the GRO I think I can be safe in saying that all the children born in and after 1849 their mothers maiden name was Nelson, not sure about the first Thomas and John.

Really struggling to find any marriage at all for a Robert Foster and an Ann Nelson.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I think that Robert Foster was my 3 x Great Grandfather.
Thank you very much Carrie xx

Lancashire / PARKER's of Burnley
« on: Friday 01 May 20 20:32 BST (UK)  »
Good Evening everyone, hope you are all ok,

This is a very strange request.....while in lockdown I am researching the family tree of one of my work colleagues. Her grandmother was Emma Parker born 2 November 1904, daughter of Lemuel Gibson Parker 1876-1923.

I know this is a longshot but Lemuel Gibson Parker was buried in Burnley Cemetery, Grave A7940 with his wives Mary Ellen and Mary. His 5yr old son Harold was buried in Grave A7939.

Then I found Lemuel Gibson Parker's parents James and Rebecca are buried in Grave A5863 along with their 2 day old daughter Lavinia. 2 more of their children, Hannah Maria and Mary Ann are buried in Graves A5864 and their son Robert is buried in Grave A 1388.

I don't suppose anyone out there has photos of these graves, if indeed they are still out there. I don't expect anyone to go out and look for me due to the current lockdown situation. :) xx

Thank You Everyone, Stay Safe, Carrie xx  :)

Yorkshire (North Riding) / GARBUTT cousins, Bilsdale.
« on: Sunday 19 January 20 16:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone, I am in need of your help again please.

I am hoping to keep this as simple as possible. I am helping a friend research their family tree and I have hit a problem that I can't seem to solve. I know that you shouldn't always rely on oral family history as things can get distorted over time, but the stories say that her great grandmothers on her mother's side were related, possibly cousins. I can certainly say that their maiden names were the same and they both came from Bilsdale.

Great Grandmother number 1 = Mary Hannah Garbutt born circa 1865 Bilsdale.
She married James Pettit in 1884 in Middlesborough and they had 4 children. After James died she married Robert Wilkinson Hearn in 1896 in Middlesborough.
1911 census lists her mother as Mary Garbutt age 66, widow, born Bilsdale.

Great Grandmother number 2 = Martha Alice Garbutt born circa 1867 Bilsdale.
She married George Dennis in 1884 in Pickering and had 11 children. In 1911 the family was living in York as George worked for the railway.

I am struggling to locate these two ladies before they married on any census record. I think I have just been staring at the problem too long and the solution is probably really obvious, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Carrie xx :)

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Rose Elizabeth and Thomas BAINBRIDGE How many children?
« on: Sunday 01 September 19 07:37 BST (UK)  »
Good Morning Everyone,

I am in need of your help again. I have a dilemma. It is about the number of children belonging to Rose Elizabeth Gilston and Thomas Bainbridge.

The 1911 census says that they had 17 children born alive, 10 still alive, 7 having died. Oral family history says that there were 20 plus 1 children altogether and my mum has names and dates for all of them, but she can't remember who told her or what she has done with the original notes.

So far I am pretty confident about 13 of them.
12 of them I have managed to trace through the available census data: William Henry 1875-1943, George 1876, Agnes Ann 1878-1974, Tom 1884, Charlotte Ann 1887-1892, Edith 1889-1953, Alfred 1889-1986, Rose Elizabeth 1891-1892, John Edward 1892-1974, Sarah Ann 1893, Peter 1895, Rose Elizabeth 1898.
I also came across one in the parish records: Richard 1880-1881.

My mum, however, has the following: Richard Arthur 1873-1876, Edith 1877, Richard Arthur 1882-1887, Frederick 1883, Walter 1885-1886, Sarah 1888, Hilda Florence 1892-1893, Walter 1899-1901.

I was wondering how, if at all, I can confirm if any or all of these other children belong to Rose Elizabeth and Thomas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Carrie :D

Ooops forgot to say, they lived in Leeds, some of the children were christened in Woodhouse, St Mark and I have found two buried in Hunslet.

Lanarkshire / Alexander GILSTON practical chemist Glasgow
« on: Thursday 15 August 19 20:21 BST (UK)  »
Hello Everyone,
Looking for a bit of help please. I am researching my 4xGreat Grandfather Alexander Gilston (1811-1864) a practical chemist. He was originally from Ireland, but moved to Scotland sometime before 1831, as on 16 January 1831 he married Ann Curran in Glasgow. They remained in Glasgow until around 1840 as their first 5 children were born in Glasgow (Peter 1832,Mary 1833,Henry 1836,Sarah Ann 1838 and Alexander 1840) By the time of the 1841 census they were living in Sandsend near Whitby.
Is there any way of finding out which Church they were married in (I got the date from the FamilySearch website, but it just said Glasgow, Lanark.) and where they would have lived?!
Thanks Carrie xx 😀
