Somerset / Thomas Clevely Walters and Martha WALTERS (nee RAPPS)
« on: Friday 12 October 07 19:47 BST (UK)  »
My great grandparents Thomas Clevely Walters and his wife Martha (nee Rapps) both died in High Littleton in December 1924 and March 1927 respectively. They were minor local "celebrities" in their way, having run a shop in the village during the early 1910's, no mean feat considering that Martha was blind.

I suspect therefore that their deaths might have been worthy of a mention in any local paper that might have operated in the area at that time, and I was wondering if anyone might have an idea of which paper that might be, and where old copies might be viewed.

Thanks

Armed Forces / Citations - B.E.M and Mention in Dispatches
« on: Monday 17 September 07 16:23 BST (UK)  »
Sorry if this has been covered before, but I am interested in finding the citations for my grandfather who was mentioned in dispatches in the First World War and my uncle who received the B.E.M in the Second World War, both while serving in the Merchant Navy. I understand that they appear in the London Gazette, but as I have no idea of the dates that they were awarded, I wondered if there was an easier way of finding them. Thanks

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / William J Hickox
« on: Wednesday 14 March 07 08:48 GMT (UK)  »
I am interested to hear from anyone regarding the above person. Apparently born in Ealing in 1862, he ended up in Bucks, marrying Ada Coleshill in 1895, and appearing on the 1901 Census in Langley Marish.  No sign on the 1871, 1881 and 1891 census. Any thoughts ?  -  The name Hickox is open to wide interpretation I suspect !

I am interested to hear from anyone regarding the above person.  Apparently
born in Ealing Middlesex in 1862, married Eton Bucks to Ada Coleshill in 1895,
and shown in the 1901 Census at Langley Marish - but no apparent signs in the 1871, 1881 and 1891 Census. I suspect the name Hickox is open to wide
interpretation, but any help greatly appreciated

« on: Wednesday 16 August 06 16:11 BST (UK)  »
Interested in any information about the family of Henry and Margaret Phelps.
Henry born in Street, Somerset in about 1820, and Margaret (no info on maiden name) born Bedwellty about 1826.

They lived in the Rhymney/Tredegar/Bedwellty area, although first two daughters Charlotte and Ann may have been born in Abergavenny. Other children include
Alfred, Eliza, Isaac, John and Mary.

Devon Lookup Requests / James Salmon Day
« on: Thursday 16 February 06 13:30 GMT (UK)  »
I have come across this name in my research of the Day families of Appledore.
I believe that he is the son of Robert Day and Mary, and that he was baptisted about 08.05.1767. Interestingly in a family totally comprising Mariners, he appears to have followed a medical career.

I also understand that there is a memorial stone to him inside the Parish Church at Hatherleigh in Devon.

Any thoughts on where I could go from here in finding out more about him, especially his medical career ?

Dorset Lookup Requests / Fromford or Romford ?
« on: Tuesday 31 January 06 14:29 GMT (UK)  »
Interested in the surname Hopkins - Fergus probably married to Ruth. Ruth (circa 1835) and first daughter Eliza (beth ?) (circa 1858) described as being from "Fromford". Is there such a place or do they mean the Romford by Verwood.

Always assumed that "Fromford" would indicate " the ford over the river Frome "

Any thoughts anyone ?

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Walters - born Pontfract 1884
« on: Saturday 28 January 06 17:14 GMT (UK)  »
Help needed please about John Thomas Walters born Pontefract 1884 and William Walters born Pontefract 1887, both sons of Thomas Cleavely Walters and Martha Walters. Moved back to Somerset by 1890, and therefore do not appear on the 1881 or 1891 Census in Yorkshire. Are there any other registers that they could have been on during their short time in Yorkshire. T.C. Walters was a miner (excavating underground roadways).

We have sent off for the birth certificates.

Kind regards  -  Chris
