Tipperary / What happened to Bridget Gammell of Nicker?
« on: Wednesday 06 September 23 13:03 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I wonder if anyone can help? I've hit a brick wall!
My great-grandfather (James Gammell who married Mary Ryan in Nicker) had a sister called Bridget Gammell. I have her birth on 20 Jan 1886, to Edmond Gammell and Johanna Treacy. I have her in the 1901 census, living in Nicker with her parents and siblings. I have her on 21 Jun 1919 as a witness at her sister, Johanna's marriage to Thomas Hayes in Nicker. Finally, I have her on 15 Apr 1921 as present at her mother's death, again, in Nicker.
I can't find her in the 1911 census anywhere in Ireland. I can't find a marriage or a death for her. I have read that she may have married a Corbett, but there's no evidence of this.
Does anyone have any ideas where I can look next? I've been searching for 6 six years for her, with no luck. Thank you  :)

Travelling People / Maguire/Gallagher/Fitzpatrick hawkers in Yorkshire
« on: Wednesday 21 March 18 11:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hello!

I'm trying to locate a relative, who I believe was a hawker. His name was Joseph Fitzpatrick (b:1860 Leeds to Mary McEvoy and Thomas Fitzpatrick). He was a coal miner in the 1871 census and a dyer in the 1881. I can't find him in the 1891 or 1901 census. In 1911, he's in Huddersfield in a lodging house as a hawker. He dies in Huddersfield in 1924.

Apart from trying to trace him during this period, I'm also trying to trace his wife and children and to identify the link between him and the Maguire family, who were hawkers. I believe he married an Annie and they had 3 children (Thomas, b:1889?, Hugh b:1892? Annie b:1895), but I cannot find a positive birth for the three children. I am following up a possible marriage, but according to my research, if the 1887 marriage is correct, the wife dies before the younger two children could be born. Annie, the youngest child, was brought up by Winifred Maguire, who was an oil cloth hawker in the West Yorkshire area. Winifred had a son, Philip Maguire and I believe he was very successful in the fairgrounds and lived in a caravan. From letters written by Hugh's son, his father and Thomas worked with their dad Joseph on the fairgrounds and Hugh would 'take all comers' as a boxer!

I'm wondering if there's a chance that one of the Maguires was the mother to Hugh and Annie (and therefore, they'd have a different surname at birth). I don't know where the children were born. I know Joseph Fitzpatrick is around the Yorkshire area, because he makes a number of court appearances for hawking without a licience and being drunk!

I hope this isn't too garbled. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks  :D

England / Missing mother...Fitzpatrick?
« on: Monday 19 March 18 14:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hello!
I am trying to trace my great, great grandma, but I have very little to go on. In total, my mum and I have been looking for 27 years without any luck!

My great, great grandad was Joseph Fitzpatrick (b:1860 Leeds to Mary McEvoy and Thomas Fitzpatrick). Joseph apparently had a wife called Annie, but I can't confirm any further details. According to family tales, she died in childbirth. The couple apparently had 3 children, but I don't have any births recorded for them and I have searched England and Ireland. My rough guess is Thomas Fitzpatrick b:1889, Hugh Fitzpatrick (my great-grandad, b:1892) and Annie Fitzpatrick (b:1895). Annie was brought up by a Winifred McGuire (nee Gallagher) in Huddersfield, which is where she married and died. Thomas married a Mary E Hagan in Huddersfield and Hugh married Lizzie Rockett, also in Huddersfield. Both brothers served in WW1.

I am missing Joseph Fitzpatrick for the 1891 and 1901 census entries. I have him and his two sons in a lodging house in Huddersfield in the 1911 census, where he states that he's married and has been for 27 years. I can't confirm this.

To complicate matters a little more, Joseph was a hawker and so was Winifred and her family. I do have criminal records for Joseph Fitzpatrick for Halifax, Dewsbury, Wakefield, so I know he was 'around'

Any help or pointers as to where to go next would be greatly appreciated :)
Thank you!
