Family Bibles / William Blythe, Derby Railway Orphanage Bible
« on: Friday 30 August 19 13:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am fortunate to have a few bibles and a hymn book in my possession. None of them are particular old, the oldest printed in the late 1920s. They are not family bibles like some of you have posted about, containing family details but they are all named to their previous owners.

One was given to my Great Grandmother in 1935 for her confirmation (she would have been 34-35 yrs old at the time and sadly died 10 years later)

One belongs to my Dad from when he was a child, issued by the Gideons ( I still have mine)

The Hymn Book belonged to my Gran who was adopted shortly after birth https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=812275.0 and she has entered a few details and dates of when living at various addresses.

The final one I found whilst clearing out my Grandads house upon his death. It is a small bible with the following written on the inside

"Presented to William Blythe by the committee of the Railway Orphanage Derby, on his leaving 23rd July 1930  signed Albert Dean Secy"

I found Albert Edward Dean in the 1911 census as Secretary at the Railway Servants Orphanage. He was 45 at the time and when I find him again in the 1939 register he is recorded as "Retired Secretary"

I've not however been able to find a link to William or who he was, and I have no idea why this bible was in my Grandparents house. I'm not sure if William was a child or worked at the Orphanage, I was leaning to previously living there as a child.

Does anyone have any clues or advice on finding out who William was?

Thanks

Good evening,

could anyone point me in the right direction for finding the residents of 12 Blithfield Street, Kensington  in 1901 or provide a link to the image?

I have somehow found the image before on Ancestry but forgot to save it!

Thanks

Good afternoon,

I have this photo in my collection of a young boy and I think his younger brother, I believe it to have come from my Mums side of the family, possibly the Halls as that is the only part of our family who have any connections to Ashington.

Is anyone able to date it for me or know anything about the studio?

Thank you

Last one!

This picture is not great and is a photo of a photo, not sure where the original is but from the same family as the photos in my other posts https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=813751.0

It has "South Charlton 1890s" written in biro on the back and so could potentially show my Great Grandad Thomas Renner and his brothers David and Robert and sisters Isabella, Margaret and Ann who were all born between 1884 and 1886 who were living at South Charlton, near Alnwick from birth until 1911 where they moved to Chillingham, near Wooler.

My Great Great Grandad also had a brother living at South Charlton and he had 4 children the same age as my Great Grandad and his siblings so potentially upto 10 ancestors in this photo!

Thanks

Good Morning,

Could anyone please help in dating this old school photo. it looks a bit older than the photos in my other two posts  https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=813751.0 and is a bit smaller at 4x2.5 inches. Again it's on a cardboard type backing with no clues as to who is on it or when taken other than it came from my Grandad.

If it's post 1911 the picture could have been taken around the Wooler area of Northumberland, and prior to this would be around South Charlton/Rock area, near Alnwick.

Thanks again everyone

Good Morning,

I have another photo I would like help in dating. It is of a similar size to the photo in my first post https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=813751.0 at 6x4.5 inches, but this one has a cardboard type frame 10x8 inches.

This photo also came from my Grandad and I know his Parents/Grandparents all lived just north of Alnwick and around Wooler from the early 1800s and with family still living in the area today.

There are no clues as to who it may be and the children and teacher are all in fancy dress for some reason, which may or may not help you date it!

it's so frustrating looking at these old, potential family photos and not being able to identify anyone!

Thanks again

Gaz

Hi,

could anyone help me in possibly dating this photo, it is on a cardboard type backing with no other details. It came from my Grandad (born 1933) and could possibly contain his Dad Thomas William Renner as a child (born 1892) living at South Charlton, near Alnwick or perhaps taken by his Grandad Thomas James Renner (born 1858) when he was manager of his local school Chillingham, from 1912 to around 1925.

A possible date may help narrow it down to either one of the above, or of course it may not relate to any of them and I'll have to look for other possible connections. My Grandads Family all lived in the North of Northumberland.

Thanks for the help.

Argyllshire / Daniel Stewart McKenzie Birth & 1901/11 census
« on: Tuesday 30 April 19 12:23 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

In researching my Family Tree I am having difficulty finding a birth entry for a Daniel Stewart McKenzie.

He is my Aunties Grandad and died during the FWW on 30th Aug 1916 whilst serving with 109 Bde RFA.

His service records still survive and he has his age as 32yrs and 275 days around the 10th Oct 1914, so give or take a day, born 28 Jan 1882 Campbeltown in Argyll.

There was a newspaper article on his death which confirms his age, marriage and Boer War service (another area i'm struggling to research)

On the 1911 census he is living at Edrom with his wife as a millworker and 3 children, but other than that I can find no reference to his the birth or in the 1891 or 1901 census.

His marriage register has him as 24 yrs old in Nov 1905 which doesn't quite match his age by about a year (maybe its my maths though)

His parents are recorded as John McKenzie (Coachman )and Floral McKenzie (looks like-McCloud)

I can not find any marriage between a J McKenzie and F McCloud but can find a John McKenzie (Coachman) and Flora McLeod in 1880 in Blythwood, Glasgow. These were living at Inveraray, working at the Argyll Arms Hotel.

Is there another avenue other than Scotlands People I can pursue as I can not seem to find him any earlier than 1911.

I can find a John and Flora McKenzie with other children in the 1891 and 1901 census but no Daniel. There is a Daniel McKenzie in 1901 in Campbeltown but he is 14, his Mother is Flora but his Father is Samuel.

His Boer War service was with Fincastle's Horse which I don't think proceeded to SA until 1902 so he should still appear on the 1901 census.

Any help in tracking him down and I would be grateful.

Thanks

Scotland / Adoption Certificate DoB
« on: Tuesday 30 April 19 11:01 BST (UK)  »
Good Morning,

I was after some advice/guidance on an adoption certificate for my Gran.

My Gran (Fathers Mum) sadly passed away in 2010 and never knew her real parents. My Dad said she tried back in 70/80s but unfortunately was unable to find any further info.

I understand that due to current laws and such that only the adoptee would be able to request any records and so I can only go off what I have.

I do have an "Extract of an entry in the adopted children register...adoption act 1958"

Entry no. 596
Name and Surname of adopted child: Winifred Jane Clark
Date of Birth, where Adoption Order directs entry of DoB: 1937 May 14th
Name/Address of Adopters: Robert Scott Clark, Jane (Duncan) Clark, Albyn Cottage, Kintore
Date of Adoption Order: 21st Feb 1938 Sheriff Court Aberdeen, Kincardine & Banff
Date of Registration: 1938 Feb 24th

This extract is dated 14th Oct 1976, so probably when my Gran was researching or perhaps she required it as proof of identity.

I do know that Robert Scott was born 'Clarke' and not 'Clark' and in my family research I can only find three instances where it is spelt without the 'e' between 1930 and 1937. the first is a voters list in 1930, the second Robert and Janes marriage entry in 1935 and my Grans adoption certificate in 1937.

I have my Dad and I's DNA uploaded to Ancestry and MyHeritage and we have several links to Scotland and in particular Aberdeen. (More than one person has asked for a link to a Smith in their family, amongst others) However none of these are close enough to actually make a concrete link.

I am able to trace my Grandads side back a few hundred years aswell as my Mums family so the link to Aberdeen is almost certainly on my Grans side.

A story I was told was that my Grans Dad died in an accident and her Mother was unable to look after her and so was put up for adoption. I do know that Jane Duncan was illegitimate and wondered if perhaps so was my Gran before being put up for adoption- I know i'll never know for sure!

So after all that I have a couple of questions!

On the Extract..Adopted Children Registrar, where it has my Grans Date of Birth it says "Date of Birth, where Adoption Order directs entry of day of Birth" Does this mean that this may not be her exact date of birth? The wording had me wondering if it may possibly have been recorded as a different date to her actual birth date.

I have noticed that in my family research that the same names repeat themselves over generations. I wondered if perhaps Winifred was her actual birth name, adding Jane as a second name after her Adoption Mother. Does anyone know what the likelihood of changing her first name as well was? She would have only been about 9 months old, so unlikely to affect her if they did.

Thanks for any help

Gaz
