Durham / Help needed with possible children
« on: Sunday 23 September 18 13:05 BST (UK)  »
I know that it's a long shot but I have found 5 possible children of my great grandparents. Could anyone be able to help me to narrow down the possibilities before I order birth certificates for them please?
The info I have so far is that all 5 possible children were recorded as Cooper with mother's maiden name as Raine and all registered in the Houghton le spring area.
My great grandmother was Frances Ann Raine b1897 in North biddick she married my great grandfather William Cooper b1888 in Durham, they married in April 1914.
Their confirmed children were William Cooper b1/10/18 and Edward Raine Cooper b3/1/21.
The possible children are
Annie Cooper b1914 d1914
Gladys Cooper b1915 d1916
John Cooper b1917 d1917
Emily E Cooper b1919 d1920
Alice Cooper b1925 d1925
All registered with mother's maiden name as Raine and all in the Houghton le spring area.
Any help would be greatly appreciated although I know that birth certificates are necessary, I am hoping to narrow down the possibilities before I order them. Thanks in advance

« on: Sunday 09 September 18 12:31 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out the circumstances surrounding my 2xgreat aunts death.
She was Sarah Beatrice Anderson b1909 d1932
Her husband was Alfonso McFarland b1907 d1932.
Both from Sunderland. They had 2 daughters Elizabeth Ann McFarland b1928 and Beatrice McFarland b1931
If anyone is able to help me find out how Sarah Beatrice and Alfonso died I would appreciate it.
Their 2 daughters were raised by Sarah Beatrice's parents along with their own children.

Family History Beginners Board / Street name changes
« on: Monday 02 April 18 21:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi i have an address for my great grandmother from the census of 1911. The street name is no longer in use but there are houses in the approximate area which would have been built at that time.
The census states 6 front row, Painshaw. Also spelled Pencher and now Penshaw.
Front Row is on maps at the bottom of Penshaw close to the old Penshaw Station.
There is also a Front Street East and West which is still there now but is at the top of Penshaw close to the old village so i know that they are two different streets.
Can anyone point me in the direction of old maps or where i can find street info from the time please. I found a couple of maps online but they are quite vague.

Family History Beginners Board / Why?
« on: Sunday 04 March 18 20:15 GMT (UK)  »
Ok so i have posted asking for help  twice. Both times I've been brushed off because i don't have bmd certificates.
I've been reading through the forum and noticed that loads of other people have gotten lots of help without them.
Have i done something wrong?
I've given lots of info too.

Durham Lookup Requests / Help with Robert Mason please.
« on: Sunday 04 March 18 18:43 GMT (UK)  »
I have a Robert Mason b1851 in Norwich, Norfolk. Sometime between 1871 and 1881 he moved to Ford, Durham. Now more commonly known as South Hylton.
During this time he married an Elizabeth Winskill b1861 in Cox Green, Durham.
I know the family from Robert and Elizabeth onwards but I can't find Robert's parents or siblings. I have spoken to other family members who have not been able to find out about them either.
I have found a James mason b1802 and a Sarah A Mason b1813 as possible parents but they are questionable.
I would really appreciate it if someone else would be able to have a look too. Thanks

Durham Lookup Requests / Vanishing G Grandad
« on: Monday 11 September 17 00:39 BST (UK)  »
I have hit a dead end. My great grandma was Frances Ann Raine born in 1898 in north biddick. She married my great grandad William Cooper born 2nd April 1897 in Gateshead. They married in 1914 and had 2 children William Cooper 1/10/1918 and Edward Raine Cooper in 1921. I have found other possible children but none survived but i can't get a definite answer as to wether they are their children so i would be grateful if anyone could help with that.
Now the biggest mystery is this.... GGrandad William walked out on my Ggran and the two boys in around 1924. My grandad was around 6 and can remember him leaving. After this i can find no trace of Ggrandad at all. I did find a william cooper born 4/4/1897 in gateshead so there is a slight dob change. He was in ww1 and enlisted without giving any details of a wife. He was a deserter and spent time in custody. After his release he changed his name to Carr but kept his dob the same. He went on to enlist in ww2 where he was a pow in Burma. Once he came back home he never married and died in gateshead in 1973. I have contacted one of his relatives who is certain that he could not possibly be my ggrandad and i showed him a photo of my grandad but he is sure there's no resemblance. So i am totally stuck now. I can't find any other William Cooper born in april 1897 in gateshead. I just don't know where to go next. If someone could help with both william b1897 and the possible children i would really appreciate it. Thanks
