Lancashire / Help/ideas finding ancestor Ellen Kilshaw
« on: Monday 18 October 21 14:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I am looking for help/ideas on how to find my 2 x Great Grandmother and her family before her marriage in 1878 or ideas why I can’t find any trace of her.

Her name was Ellen Kilshaw born 1849 in Burtonwood, Lancashire, England. Her father was called John Kilshaw occupation Railway Pointer and had died by 1878 when Ellen married Stanley Chandler. Her address was Church Street, Warrington on her marriage certificate. Witnesses at her wedding were Richard and Jane Barlow who I discovered  lived at 31 Dakin’s Yard, Church Street, Warrington.

I cannot find any trace of Ellen or her family before she got married, afterwards I can trace her until her death in 1912 although I can’t find where she is buried.

I ordered a birth certificate for an Ellen Kilshaw in Prescot mothers name TILLY but this is not correct. As well as this Ellen’s father being William I have followed her until she married and am satisfied that this is not my 2 x Great Grandmother.

I think that this is all the information that I have. I would appreciate any help or advice.

Many thanks

Hi,

We are visiting Newton-le-Willows on Thursday but won’t have much time. I have a plot number which is C/2793, however when printing off the map it only shows numbers 1-21, there is no lettered sections at all. I am quite confused and wondered if anyone can help me please?

Many thanks

Laois (Queens) / Queens County Birth Records 1857-1867
« on: Saturday 24 November 18 18:33 GMT (UK)  »

I wonder if anyone can help. I am trying to find my 3x g grandmothers name. The problem is I cannot find birth/baptism records for my 2x g grandmother or her two siblings. I am fairly positive that they were not Catholic.

Edward Moore born 1857
Mary Moore born 1860
Elizabeth Moore born 1867.

All born Queens County. Their Father was called Michael Moore who was a gardener  and I know that he was dead by 1888. This information was from Elizabeth’s Wedding Certificate.

If anyone can help me I would appreciate it.

Cheshire / Winwick Hospital Cemetery.
« on: Sunday 21 October 18 19:25 BST (UK)  »

I found out last year that my Great Grandmother was buried in Winwick Hospital Cemetery which makes sense as she died in Winwick Hospital. I assumed that the cemetery would still be there even though the hospital isn’t. Last Christmas whilst visiting relatives we drove to where we thought it was but we could only find a school and houses. I have read a thread today on a forum and somebody said that some of the houses are built on the cemetery. Can anybody tell me if there is still a cemetery and if so where is it?

The Common Room / I am not sure how to find out if this is my 3 x g grandmother.
« on: Monday 10 September 18 18:11 BST (UK)  »
I have been at a brick wall with my 3 x G Grandparents Joseph & Mary Redding for the last 16 years mainly because they are Irish.

About 6 months ago I found a marriage certificate for my 3 x G Aunt (Mary’s sister). I was really excited as it listed her father’s name and assumed this was also Mary’s father and thought I could get a lot further with my research but sadly not.

The only information I have about Joseph Redding is his name and occupation which was Land Steward. Yesterday whilst browsing marriage records I found a record for a marriage between Joseph Redding and Mary Bachelor which would be the right marriage year, birth year of Mary and general area but the maiden name and father’s name is different than her sisters. The thing that really piqued my interest with this record is that Joseph’s occupation is listed as Steward. I could have sworn that I had ruled out Mary Bachelor before many years ago when I first started research but I can’t remember how. I cannot find a birth record for either Mary or her sister. Can anyone give me any ideas how I can prove or disprove whether Mary Bachelor is my 3 x G Grandmother?

Lancashire / The Volunteers (army) pre WW1, how do I find information?
« on: Friday 20 July 18 18:42 BST (UK)  »

I am at a brick wall with regard to my Great Grandad and I am trying to find more information no matter how small. Whilst going through his WW1 Army enlistment form he states that he was in the volunteers for 6 years, I am making the assumption that this was army volunteers. At this time he lived in Newton-In-Makerfield. Is there any way I could find any information about the volunteers and maybe get hold of any records if there are any?

Many thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Can’t find these people on census. Help please.
« on: Saturday 07 October 17 20:08 BST (UK)  »

I don’t know if anyone can help but I feel like I am going around in circles. Ellen Kilshaw born Burtonwood, Lancashire 1852. I am trying to find more information about her dad who I have found through her marriage record was called John. I cannot find a birth record for Ellen or any sign of them on 1862 & 1872 censuses. Ellen married Stanley Chandler on 19 October 1878. Her residence is shown as Warrington.

I feel as if I am missing something. Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks

Lancashire / Winwick Hospital Records.
« on: Friday 22 September 17 18:23 BST (UK)  »

My great grandmother was institutionalised for most of her life. The story in the family was that she never got over her husband’s dying in WW1. I have found that she was already institutionalised before he signed up.

We would like to find out the real reason and wondered if anybody knew if it is possible to get hold of her records. Winwick hospital shut down in the 1980’s so I don’t know if all the residents notes would have been destroyed.

Many thanks

Family History Beginners Board / How do I obtain an Irish Army birth certificate?
« on: Tuesday 19 September 17 13:55 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

I dip in and out of genealogy as I keep coming up against brick walls so I am not really a beginner, just not that great at knowing where to look. I recently joined Findmypast and found my g g grandmothers maiden name through her sister's marriage certificate. After weeks of searching I think that I have found her birth record. It is under GRO Army Birth Indices. The image and transcription does not give me much information just her name, year of birth and area, all of which fit. There is nothing else that tells me that this is definitely her. I have no proof that her dad was in the army. I was going to take a chance and buy the certificate but when I go onto the GRO website it is only giving me the option of England and Wales but she was born in Ireland. Any help would be appreciated.
