Moray (Elginshire) / Jane Forsyth 1763 - 1839
« on: Monday 08 April 24 16:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi There, I would appreciate some thoughts regarding my 4 x Great Grandparents (Maternal) Alexander King & Jean/Jane Forsyth. In particular Jane.

I think she was born 3rd April 1763 in Alves, Moray to George Forsyth & Margaret Thomson but all the other trees that I have seen show her as being born 1st October 1760 in Botrophine, Banffshire to William Forsyth (Forsythia Botanist) & Anne/Agnes MacKay. (I know not to trust other trees without verification).

Alexander & Jane were possibly married in 1785 but I cannot find any proof of this on Scotland's People website.

Alexander & Jane had 7 children whose births I have found in the OPR's were all born in Keith, Banffshire.
Margaret 1788, Alexander 1790, Jean 1792, Helen 1794, George 1797, John 1800 & Isobel 1803.

Using the Scottish naming pattern I would expect to see a William somewhere especially if William Forsyth was a Botanist & also there is no Anne/Agnes whereas there  is a Margaret (first daughter) & George (second son). Another thought is that there could have been a child (or two) born between 1785 & 1788.

I have not been able to confirm Alexander's parents yet but it is a possibility that he was born in 1764 in Marnoch to James King & Elspet Innes.

Jean possibly died 1839 in Keith. The OPR shows her as wife of Alexander King.
Assuming this is correct I checked for Alexander's death between 1839 & 1855 & there was an Alexander King who died 21 Feb 1841.
Neither OPR gives an age which would have been helpful.

I could not see an Alexander King in the 1841 census for Keith of an appropriate age.

Aberdeenshire / helen Horn 1802
« on: Tuesday 13 June 23 15:03 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can give me some information about Helen Horn who was born in Drumblade in 1802 to James Horn (1748 - 1805) & Elizabeth Barron (1760 - 1814). Helen was my 3 x Great Grandmother.
There is a bit of confusion regarding her birth & parents.
I have information about her from 1827 - 1892 when she died in the form of Census records, Marriage record & Death certificate.
She had an illegitimate son Alexander (2 x Great Grandfather)(1827 - 1898) by James Gray (1798 - 1874) in Forgue.
She married George Nicol in Forgue in 1833 & appears in an 1836 Church Census with George & Alexander in Forgue.
All other records show her as having been born in Forgue in 1805 & her death certificate shows her parents as Peter Horn & Isobel Duncan.

My query is that there was no baptism record for Helen in 1805 to Peter & Isobel but there were 3  children baptised in Forgue. John 1802, Christian 1806 & Alexander 1809.
There was however a Helen born in 1802 in Drumblade to James Horn & Elizabeth Barron who also had 4 other children James 1796, Alexander 1798, Jean 1800 & William 1805.
James (snr) died Jan 1805 & Elizabeth died March 1814.
Could it be that when James died Elizabeth would have been left on her own to bring up 5 children & so Helen & possibly the others were adopted by other families.
If so then Helen would have been about 2 1/2 years old & may have been ignorant of who her real parents were & always thought of Peter & Isobel as her parents & the date of adoption (1805) as her birth year.
In other words is Helen 1802 & Helen 1805 the same person If I can find any information about Helen 1802 then that will reject my theory.

London and Middlesex / John Cramp 1762 - 1809
« on: Tuesday 25 January 22 17:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
I wonder if anyone can give me some advice regarding John Cramp & his children
The information I have at present is that he was born about 1762 & died in 1809.
There were 4 children. Ann 1788 - 1841, John 1790 - 1854, Elizabeth 1792 - 1841, Mary 1797 - ?
I have the baptism records for all 4 children & they were all described as son/daughter of John Cramp & Elizabeth. High Street, Whitechapel, Middlesex & the baptisms were at St. Mary, Whitechapel

John Cramp (snr) (butcher) died in 1809 & left a will which I have mostly transcribed.
He left most of his estate to his son John when he reached 21 years of age, which ties in with the baptism of John in 1790. His wife Elizabeth was to take care of the estate until such time.
He also left £500 each to his daughter Elizabeth & daughter in law Ann, to be given to them when they got married. There is no mention of Mary so I assume she has died as a child before 1809.
Does the term daughter in law possibly mean step daughter because I am sure the Ann described was not married & married William Edward Jury in 1812 & one of the witnesses was Elizabeth Cramp.

Ancestry shows 2 marriages for a John Cramp in 1783 to Elizabeth Badham at St. Botolph without Aldersgate & later Elizabeth Hyde in 1787 at St. James Clerkenwell. John was described as a widower when he married in 1787.
There was also a burial for Elizabeth Cramp in 1785 at St. Leonards, Shoreditch, Hackney.
Could these be connected. The locations concern me & I don't fully trust other trees.

I have also found a marriage in 1800 at St. Mary, Whitechapel between John Cramp (widower) & Elizabeth Cramp (widow). They were both of this parish.

Could the children have been baptised before they married as the record just says John Cramp &  Elizabeth (not wife Elizabeth)
What about the baptism of Ann if she was a step daughter.

Surrey / Lizabeth Cramp born 1792
« on: Monday 17 January 22 16:56 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for some advise regarding Elizabeth Cramp who was Baptised in 1792. I am not sure if I should be checking in Surrey or Middlesex.
Elizabeth was baptised at St. Mary, Whitechapel, Middlesex in 1792 to John Cramp & Elizabeth ?
She married Edmund Thomas Jury at St. Faith under St. Paul on 15th July 1828.
They had a son Edmund Jury who was baptised at St. Faith under St. Paul on 9th June 1829 & buried at St. Faith under St. Paul on 14th June 1829 age 6 days.
Edmund Thomas Jury married again in October 1842 & was described as a widower.
There is no mention of Elizabeth in the 1841 census so I can be sure she died between 14th June 1829 & 6th June 1841.
There is an Elizabeth Cramp who was buried on 16th October 1829 at Mortlake, Surrey age 37.
The age would be correct & the name if she was buried using her Maiden name.
My questions are : Why use her maiden name & why was she buried in Mortlake & not nearer to St. Faith under St. Paul. On the same page of the burial record is an Ann Brown whose abode is given as St. Mathew, Bethnal Green.
Any thoughts please.

Moray (Elginshire) / Thomas Stuart & Elizabeth Bremner
« on: Saturday 10 April 21 14:50 BST (UK)  »
Sorry if this is rather long & possibly confusing but I am trying to work out who my 3 x great grandparents, parents were.
Thomas Stuart & Elizabeth Bremner were my 3 x great grandparents. They were married in Aberlour in 1797 & the marriage record says they were both in the parish of Aberlour, but does that mean they were born there or living there at the time of their marriage.
Their gravestone indicates from their ages at death that they were born in 1774.
They had 8 children all born in Aberlour.
Ann (1798), Robert (1801), Patrick (1803), William (1805), George (1807), Margaret (1810), John (1812) & Thomas (1816).
My initial query was to find out who Elizabeth's parents were.
Looking on S/P index there was 3 options for Elizabeth's birth/baptism.
3rd July 1774 at Keith, parents James Bremner & Janet McKenzie.
(Elspet) 11th March 1775 at Rothes & Dundarcus parent George Bremner.
3rd October 1779 at Gamrie, parents Peter Bremner & Christian Thomson.
I have discarded these for various reasons but then with a little help I was pointed to a Patrick Bremner who married Margaret Gordon in 1751 at Marnoch (which is not too far from Aberlour). They had a daughter Elizabeth born in 1752. Could this Elizabeth have had an illegitimate daughter in 1774 (my Elizabeth) & possibly died in childbirth & Elizabeth was raised by her grandparents. The fact that 2 of Elizabeth's children were called Patrick & Margaret gave me a small clue due to the Scottish naming pattern, although not definite.
This then led me to question Thomas's birth & parents.
There is a Thomas born 26th April 1774 in Keith, Parents were Thomas Stuart & Elizabeth Geddes.
The general consensus has been that this is the correct person, but as with the naming pattern then his parents do not match with the children.
Looking a bit wider I found a Thomas born in Knockando (not too far from Aberlour) to Robert Bremner & Margaret Inkson in1772.
If I take this to be Thomas's parents then going by the naming pattern I have the first son Robert named after the paternal grandfather, the second son Patrick named after the maternal grandfather & the second daughter Margaret named after the paternal grandmother. One fly in the ointment is Ann (1798).
Another slight factor being that Patrick was not that common a name at that time (I think). Also one of Patrick/Peter's (he changed his name before he married) children was called Gordon.
I know there are a few gaps & if's in here but I would appreciate any thoughts.
PS. Libindx goes with the birth of Thomas in Keith in 1774 but has that been used because that was what others have said.
I hope I have not bored you or missed anything out or am I trying to reinvent the wheel.

Banffshire / Alexander Barclay 1806 - 1874
« on: Thursday 03 September 20 12:05 BST (UK)  »
I would appreciate some thoughts on the second husband of my 3 x great grandmother please.
Census records & death certificate show he was born abt. 1806/1807.
His death certificate shows his parents as Alexander Barclay & Elizabeth Weir, the witness was a neighbour James Ross.
I have looked on Scotland's people index for a birth around that time & there are 10 children born to Robert Barclay & Catherine Weir between 1801 & 1820.
My thoughts are this is correct & the neighbour was unsure of his parents first names.
Any thoughts please.

I wonder if anyone could help to date the attached photo & how old the lady is.
I think her name was Elizabeth White born 1864 in Hackney, Middlesex & died in 1908 in Rochford Essex. She would have been my wife's maternal grandmother.

London and Middlesex / Arthur J Cable & Anne Bysouth marriage 1931
« on: Thursday 09 July 20 15:46 BST (UK)  »
Due to the GRO not dealing with non urgent requests for certificates does anyone have any information regarding the marriage between Arthur J Cable & Anne Bysouth at Poplar in 1931.
I am in particular interested to know how old Arthur was & who Anne's father was to help clear up an issue with her.
Thanks
