South Africa / Searching for Freemason's in South Africa
« on: Tuesday 04 July 06 12:39 BST (UK)  »
Hello All!

Does anybody have any suggestions as to how I would go about getting in contact with Freemasons in South Africa.

My great great grandfather, Thomas William Solomon Brown owned the Masonic Hotel in Worcester during the late 1800s.  Before he set sail on the Titanic in 1912, he sold this hotel to a Mr Jim/James Carroll who bought it for GBP12,000.

Many of the notes I possess regarding TWS Brown point to him being a prominant freemason around this area, and I was wondering if/how I could contact this organisation for further information - or even the Masonic Hotel in Worcester, on the off chance that they still have some documents regarding him.

At this stage I have no information regarding his family (parents/ancestors) and I am attempting to research other areas (hence this new topic) to find more about the man, in the chance that further family information may pop up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

South Africa / BROWN/WILLOUGHBY/FORD/COETZEE

Hello All,

I am attempting to find information regarding my great-grandmother's family in South Africa.

My great-grandmother was EDITH EILEEN BROWN - oldest living survivor of the Titanic, until her death in 1997.  Her parents were a THOMAS WILLIAM SOLOMON BROWN and ELIZABETH CATHERINE FORD.  (married in Aug 1890)

FORD was TWS BROWN's second wife - his first being ISABELLA GRECEILDA WILLOUGHBY (b. 1853, d. 1889)  They were of 1820 Cape Colony Settler Stock.

They had 5 children, William James, (b. 1875), Lillian Hendrietta (b. 1878, d. 1947), Harriet Elizabeth Maria (b. 1880, d. 1961), Thomas Andrew Ralph (b. 1882, d. 1959), and Ernest Herbert Willoughby (b. 1886, d. 1914).

THOMAS ANDREW RALPH BROWN married a MAGDALENA CORNELIA COETZEE (the youngest of 14 children), her parents were a JOHANNES JACOBUS HENDRIK COETZEE (although some research points to him having the first name, Hendrik) and JOHANNA MARIA ROBERTS, who by all accounts were a highly respecte Free State Family - fighting for the Boers during the war.  Johannes/Hendrik was the cousin of President PAUL KRUGER.

If anybody has information at all (or knows where I can find more) I would love to hear from you - regardless of how small or insignificant you may think it.  I have attempted to do 'internet' South African research, and it has been a nightmare!

I look forward to hearing from anyone,

Warmest Regards,  Naomi
