Yorkshire (West Riding) / St Mary's on Tong Road, Wortley
« on: Friday 28 July 06 03:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

I'm trying to find some information about burials for services held at St Mary's (of Bethany) on Tong Road, Wortley.  I know the church itself was demolished back around the 1970's but my mum seems to remember that the cemetery part was either further up the road or over on the other side!

Would anybody know if this cemetery is still there and what it's called? Better still, if there is plot plan (?) available anywhere? I know some very generous, dedicated genealogists have done plans of some church graveyards but wouldn't know where to go about looking for one.

I'm going over to the UK for 3 weeks in September and hope to get up to the cemetery if it's still there to have a look around but mum remembers it as being very large - although she was only a child at the time and size is relevant aye!

Any info would be greatly appreciated - especially the name of it  :D

Many thanks

Debbie

Dumfriesshire / Batch numbers for family search?
« on: Wednesday 28 June 06 23:47 BST (UK)  »
I was wondering if there were any extracted records on Family Search for Dumfries

I was lucky enough to find someone listing all the batch numbers for births and marriages for Kirkcudbright which I've just been through page by page pulling out all the entries with names I'm interested in for future reference - took a while but I'm sure it'll come in handy at some stage  :)

I was hoping to do the same for Dumfries as I have even more family from there so I tried some fairly safe searches (William Smith! - who is actually a rellie) for different times but all I can find are member submitted records. I was hoping to pick up some batch numbers but no such luck.

Does anybody know if there are any?

Many thanks,

Debbie  :)

Cumberland / Carlisle - key to the city and prev. Mayors
« on: Monday 19 June 06 21:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

Just a general question as I have no dates yet and it's fairly recent but I've been told a relative, Ritson Graham,  was Mayor of Carlisle in the 1950's and also received the 'key to the city'. Is there a website where you can look up previous Mayors and people who received 'keys'?

I've searched google but haven't been able to find anything.

Many thanks

Debbie  :)

Ireland / Does anybody know this placename?
« on: Friday 09 June 06 08:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

I've just found my first Irish relative :D

Unfortunately I know absolutely nothing about Ireland or placenames therein and wondered if anyone recognised what the name is in the picture.  Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated as I don't really know where to start looking. I'm only just getting used to searching the Scottish records and sites so I know I'm going to get really confused. Never mind, it all adds to the fun ay  ;D

Cheers, Debbie

Oops, just had a look at this - I don't know how to link picture so it shows in the message without having to download it, sorry  :-\

Suffolk Lookup Offers / WETHERINGSETT Parish Records
« on: Friday 09 June 06 02:06 BST (UK)  »
I can look up births, marriages and deaths in Wetheringsett (cum Brockford) up to 1900. A lot of the entries for 1500-1700 are unreadable but you never know your luck!

These are microfiche records so a name and an approximate date are needed.

Please post any request in the Suffolk Lookup Requests board.

Cheers, Debbie

Technical Help / Help please...with fiche reader
« on: Tuesday 16 May 06 01:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi there  :)

I have a question about parts on a fiche reader. I bought one 2nd hand which works but won't focus. I've taken it to bits and had a look at it and everything seems to be ok. However, inside are 2 lens which both have a threaded collar on them. The lens and collar drop into 2 holes. With the front off the reader I can see that when I turn the focus button this turns the collar on the lens in the centre. There's a slider bar that moves the lens from side to side so you can pick which lens is used. There is nothing there though to thread the collar to so when it is turned using the focus button it just goes round in circles! Should there be a 2nd threaded fitting which maybe goes in the hole first or in from the underneath so that when the collar is turned it raises or lowers the lens using the threads? That doesn't sound very clear to me so I hope you can understand what I'm trying to ask! And never having used a fiche reader before I'm not sure what parts there should be.

Any help would be much appreciated as at the moment I can only read my fiche by adjusting the slider bar verrry slowly until it comes into focus and have to do this everytime I move the fiche, even if it's only half an image - not only annoying but not doing a lot for my eyes either!

If someone who has a fiche reader could have a look and see if I've got parts missing it would be very helpful. I don't know if it's relevant but it's a Micron 780A reader.

Many thanks,

Debbie

Dumfriesshire / Smith/Bell marriage in St Mungo - I can't find it
« on: Friday 05 May 06 01:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

I'm trying to find the marriage of Thomas Smith & Jean/Jane Bell supposedly on the 5th September 1837 at St Mungo, Dumfries. I've found them in the 1851 census living at Bankhead, Eskdalemuir with 5 children. I've also found them in the IGI with 9 children. This is where I found the marriage date but there's nothing on Scotlandspeople.

Thomas was born 1814 Tundergarth and his father is called George. Jean/Jane was born 1818 Hoddam - these details match on IGI and the census. I've looked for Thomas' birth on scotlands people and it's not there. There are 3 for Jean in 1819 but I haven't looked at them yet (no credit  :-\) as I have neither of her parents names to match.

To confuse things even further there is another marriage on IGI for Thomas Smith and Jean Bell on 3rd September 1837 but at Dryfesdale instead! I've also looked for this on scotlandspeople but no luck there either. I'm taking the St Mungo marriage as mine as they have a son William born 1850 which was my starting point.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated as I don't know where to look next  ???

Many thanks,

Debbie

Kirkcudbrightshire / Anybody know of Fellrigg or Port Cheer?
« on: Sunday 09 April 06 23:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I'm looking for 2 places - not sure if they are places or house names though  ???

The first is Fellrigg - this appears in books belonging to my grandfather who was born in Upper Monybuie, Balmaclellan. It's written as Fellrigg, Moniaive.

The second is what looks like Port Cheer - on the parish record for my grandad's birth as where his parents were married. It's written Port Cheer, Rerrick in 1895.

I've looked on the old-maps site and found Upper Monybuie but can't find either Fellrigg or Port ........?

Anybody know of them or have any suggestions?

Many thanks, Debbie

Scotland / Is it possible to purchase records?
« on: Thursday 06 April 06 08:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I'm just starting my dad's side of the family which is from Scotland and wondered if it was possible to buy records on fiche or cd for the different areas in the same way that I purchased fiche copies of the Wetheringsett parish registers in Suffolk? I had a look but couldn't find anything.

Does anybody know? At the beginning I'm going to be looking at Kirkcudbright, Moniaive, Castle Douglas and Haugh of Urr in Dumfries and Galloway but who knows where from there!

Any info much appreciated  :)

Many thanks,

Debbie
