I want to view the Marriage record of Mary Ann Riddell (also listed as Riddett) and James Elliott. I have the reference to this record via ancestry.

The marriage date is 4 Nov 1822, at St. Mary's Church, Portsea, Hampshire, England.
FHL Film Number: 1596294
Reference ID: Page 118 #353.

I'm not sure this is the correct record - the Mary Ann & James I am looking for have a somewhat unique age gap for the time - she is 7 or 8 years his senior.

Any tips on how I can do this? Thank you!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Words written on top of 1931 Canadian Census
« on: Wednesday 26 July 23 14:44 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

This is a long shot - but there are words written sideways overtop of the designation "lodger" in the Canadian census that I can't make out at all. To offer some context the household contains a 'head', a 'domestic' (my grandmother), and 5 children who are hers but not his, and all listed as 'lodgers'. Any chance anyone can make out what this is? Below is a link to the ancestry full page (my attachment is too big), and a close-up screen shot of the words that have been rotated 90 degrees. Thank you!

Lanarkshire / 1945 Divorce Record - is there any way to access?
« on: Tuesday 25 July 23 18:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I am curious if there is any way to access a 1945 divorce record from Scotland. I understand the access time is now 100 years - is there any type of Freedom of Information Act I can go through?

I've been trying to solve a mystery for 5 years now. My Great Grandfather, Richard Craddock Gray (b.1893, d.1966) immigrated with his wife (Isabella Flemming Todd) to Canada in 1924 with his 3 children.

We know at some point he left his wife and kids and returned to Scotland. Between 1925 and 1938, 5 more children were born to Isabella, but the paternity of some of the children may not be attributed to Richard. We see he is still with his wife and kids in 1926 (census of Western Canada), but by 1931 Isabella and the children are living with another man.

My Grandmother (b.1922) remembered him leaving when she was about 6. There is a record that might be him from 1935 in Scotland (living on Fairfield Street), but no dates or middle names to confirm. The next official records are in 1944, a marriage to Catherine Boone, and a divorce from Isabella (which is closed). I am trying to figure out what happened to him between 1926 and 1944. I can't find a record of him arriving back in Scotland. I'd appreciate any thoughts.

United States of America / Help w death record: Inga Halvorson
« on: Wednesday 04 May 22 15:25 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

I'm looking for help today to find the death record for Inga Olava Halvorson (nee Nilsen). I am actually trying to trace a rare genetic mutation and would like to find Inga's cause of death.

Born October 18, 1872, in Porsgrunn, Telemark, Norway. Immigrated to United States in 1896. Husband is Olaf or Ole Halvorson (spelling varies, Halverson, Halvorsen), children Arnold Norman and Hjalmer Sverre ( plus 2 children died young in Norway). Parents are not Peder and Marin Halvorson - there is a similar Inga.

We have a family record saying she died on August 14th, 1918 at the age of 46 in Fork, Marshall County Minnesota (there is a grave photo as well) Buried in Boe Cemetary Stephen, Marshall County, Minnesota, United States of America.

I would appreciate any assistance!

United States of America / Ezekiel "Zeal" Welch
« on: Tuesday 04 August 20 20:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi There,
I have hit a bit of a brick wall and am hoping for some assistance.

I am looking for Ezekiel "Zeal" Welch, he's my 4th Great Grandfather
Here's what I do know:
- He was born around 1800 and died around 1877 ( source is only ancestry trees, no source documentation)
- He married a Hannah Mead around 1824/1825 - possibly around Walsingham, Haldimand County, Ontario, Canada or possibily somewhere in the United States. She lived from approximatly 1800 - 1883 ( again, just Ancestry trees, no documentation, although I think it's possible this information is incorrect, as there was a Hannah Mead married to a Seely Mead with this same information)
- He had one son, Benjamin Mattison Welch who was born around 1824/1825 - birth location unknown, but some family trees on Ancestry indicate the US.
- I have been able to confirm everything about Benjamin, his marriages, and his children, but nothing about Ezekiel.
- He might be Irish (Later census from Benjamin have Irish indicated as his "tribe")
- There is a paragraph in the Long Point Settlers that mentions he married Hannah and settled in the US

Hannah Mead, the second daughter, married Zeal Welch, and settled in the States. She had one son, Benjamin, who married Catherine Dedrick, and settled in Walsingham, where he raised a family of four sons—Abraham, William, Madison and James; and three daughters—Harriet, Susan and Jane. Subsequently Benjamin Welch married Rebecca Jewell, by whom he had a second family. source: https://sites.google.com/site/longpointsettlers/pioneer-sketches/owen-chapter-86

I would love some assistance locating more information about Ezekiel "Zeal" Welch. There are a few records in the US, but they all have the wrong children or spouse. Thank-you!

Scotland / Tracking a return back to Scotland after immigration.
« on: Friday 10 May 19 17:19 BST (UK)  »
I'm tracking to track the movement of my Great Grandfather, Richard Craddock Gray (born OCT 23 1893 d. Dec.20 1966). He came to Canada in 1924, was recorded living in Saskatchewan Canada in 1926, and then resurfaces again in 1944 in Glasgow, Scotland (and married a Catherine Boon). We suspect he left Saskatchewan sometime between 1927 - 1938, but cannot find any records. The Canadian Census is only released until 1926, so that's not helpful. I have tried looking at passenger lists coming back into the UK with little success. I've also gone through the voter rolls in Glasgow, but there's not much defining information in there to figure out if it's the right Richard Gray.

I would appreciate any tips you might have!

Europe / Birthplace: Austria/Poland
« on: Tuesday 27 November 18 00:12 GMT (UK)  »
I've located a US federal census from 1900 - it lists my Grandmothers birthplace as Poland, Austria. Can anyone help me with the history that might explain why a birthplace would be described as Poland/Austria? I can understand Poland/Russia...but this one is stumping me! Thank-you!

« on: Tuesday 23 January 18 19:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hello All,

I am having a hard time deciphering the name of the town Olaf Halvorson was born. It looks like Hasbook or Harbook Norway, but no such place exists. There is a Hasvik ( similar sound), might that be it? I would be very grateful any help with this, thank-you!!

Scotland / Inbound travel to Scotland - 1925 - 1935?
« on: Tuesday 23 January 18 15:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

I'm still working to piece together some details for a particular family member - Richard Craddock Gray (b.10 OCT 1892). I have birth, marriage (both), Canada Immigration, divorce and death records, but I am hoping to fill in some of the story.

We know he arrived in Canada in 1924, and left shortly after, likely between 1925 - 1930. He resurfaces in the records again in 1944 with a divorce & second marriage. What we don't know is exactly when and why he left Canada, or what he did until 1944 (except for that he picked up the trade of being a slater). Any idea how I can fill in some of these blanks? Does Scotland have records of inbound boat travel from 1925 - 1935?

Thank-you!
