Caernarvonshire / Horse Jockey & Horse Breaker
« on: Thursday 01 March 18 22:31 GMT (UK)  »
In the 1851 Census, my GGGrandfather Henry Griffith, living at Chapel Row,  Criccieth is described as a horse jockey. In the 1861 and 1871 Census he is described as a horse breaker. By 1881 he was described as a farmer, living at Cefniwrch Bach, Criccieth. In Ceiri Griffith's book he is also known as Cae Harry. Can anyone throw some light on these occupations? Horse breaker I can understand at a time when horses would have been used extensively. But jockey? Any clue as to why he had what I assume was the nickname of Cae Harry?

Caernarvonshire Lookup Requests / The Griffith family of Criccieth
« on: Friday 19 January 18 17:21 GMT (UK)  »
I have been researching my mother's Welsh family, working back from my   G Grandmother Jane Griffith who was born in Dolbenmaen in 1836. Her father ended his days in Criccieth as a farmer living at Cefniwrch Bach, Criccieth (census 1891) He died before 1901. On the various census returns he was shown as having been born in 1806 at Bryncroes but I have unable to identify him and hence trace the family further back. I have also been unable to find his marriage to Ellen or Elinor of Dolbenmaen who was born around 1814. Any guidance or tips gratefully received!
