Northumberland / Photo of Moore's of Longhorsley 1900s
« on: Saturday 27 March 21 18:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I have been taking a look through some old family albums and decided to try and reunite some photos with their "families". These are people I am not related to / descended from.

This photo is of the Moore family from Longhorsley:
William, Edwin,
Robert, James, George and Leslie
I am not sure if the names match with the positioning of the people on the photo.

I think their birth dates were James 1902, George(William) 1906, Leslie 1908, (Wilfred)Edwin 1913, Robert (1916). I am assuming William at the back is the father.

My relatives, the Johnson's were born 1907-1921 and were at school with the Moores / neighbours of theirs in Longhorsley.

Hopefully this photo is of interest to somebody.

Best Wishes

England / Help understanding 1830s Criminal Petitions Records
« on: Thursday 10 December 20 12:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

My 4xG-Grandfather, Thomas Walker was transported to NSW for 14 years after being convicted of Felony at the North Riding Quarter Sessions in April 1828 (arrived on Lord Melville 1829).

In 1835 a petition was lodged on his behalf by local magistrates amongst others. At the top of the petition is the notation "Ov 37" and I think at the foot of the first page it is "Answered 23 July 1835".

I have found another record in the HO19 series which I think shows that the petition had "Nil" result. However the date for conviction is given as April 1835 (not 1828). I have looked for other Thomas Walkers convicted 1835 and do not find a match. The "Ov 37" notation appears again in this document as part of the result column.

Thomas Walker was granted a Ticket of Leave in 1836 (then 1839 and 1841) and granted a Certificate of Freedom in 1843 (end of his 14 yr sentence).

- Does the date of sentence mean this is not my Thomas Walker, or could 1835 be referring to something else?
-Does anybody know what the "Ov 37" notation means?
-Am I correct in thinking Nil means nothing was done based on the petition?

I will attach some screenshots of the document that is causing me confusion.

Many thanks for any help on this (RootsChatters in Australia are being a great help in other areas of this research).

Australia / Thomas Walker, Convict freed 1843. What happened next?
« on: Tuesday 08 December 20 11:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I am researching my 4xG-Grandfather, Thomas Walker. Briefly this is what I have found / what I understand the chain of events to be:

1789 Thomas was born near Northallerton, Yorkshire.
1820 he stole some hay but avoided arrest.
1828 he stole some geese (it's a long story, he got on the wrong side of a magistrate and the two offences were put together).

14th April 1828 he was convicted at Northallerton* and transported for 14years.

6th May 1829 Thomas arrived in NSW on the Lord Melville.
1835 back in Yorkshire a petition was raised for his pardon.
1841 he was granted a pardon.
16th Jan 1843 he was granted a certificate of Freedom.

I am trying to trace what happened to Thomas after 1843. I understand that very few freed convicts managed to return to the UK.

On the UK 1851 census his wife is listed as "Widowed" but I know this could also be the notation she used if she knew her husband was not returning home.

If anybody could point me in the right direction of where I might find out more info about Thomas after 1843 it would be much appreciated.

*Northallerton sometimes referred to as York and sometimes wrongly stated as Northampton (eg on Cert of Freedom)

Many thanks,

Caroline

Hello,

with the Woodhorn Archives closed I'm hoping somebody can help me with another source of info for an 1870 marriage.

George Pickard and Jane Rogerson were married 3 May 1870 in Newcastle.

Jane's first marriage (to Andrew Rogerson) was in St John, Newcastle and on the marriage bond to George Pickard she is described as being of that parish (although she was from Northumberland and lived in Alnwick).

Jane's father was Samuel Hume and I'm hoping to find a profession/occupation for him if possible (the Humes are the focus of my current research).

If anybody has access to the St John records and could see if their marriage was in that church it would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

United States of America / North Dakota, Eugene McPherson, adopted, born approx 1911
« on: Tuesday 25 February 20 19:24 GMT (UK)  »
Apologies, just noticed this should have been posted in Look-up Requests!
I'll re-post there and hopefully this post can be removed.

Good evening,

I am looking for some help in tracing Eugene McPherson, born approx 1911.

On the 1920 US Census he is the adopted son of Francis and Edna Cook.
On the 1930 US Census he is Eugene Thomas MacPherson, in the army, stationed in Hawaii.
On the 1940 US Census he is back in North Dakota, married, with his wife and child.

I believe his birthday was 26th April, probably 1911 but possibly 1910. He may have been born in Colgate / Steele, North Dakota.

I am trying to find out who his biological parents were but have not found any resources online to shed more light on this.

Is it correct that North Dakota birth records are sealed for 125 years?

Can anybody recommend any resources to help me find out more about his birth / adoption / biological parents?

I am based in England so cannot physically visit any archives in North Dakota.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance,

Caroline

Hello,

I believe this photo is of my 3x Great Grandfather who died 1888 aged 75 years.

Can anybody help narrow down the date based on dress etc to see if this could be correct? The alternative is his son (same name, died 1939 aged 84 years) but I have many photos of him which don't bare any resemblance to this gentleman as far as I can see.

Many thanks

Hello,

I'm trying to locate two burials:

Ann Duffield died 19 Feb 1873 Kenninghall aged 56 Years.
John Bullen died 10 Aug 1888 Wicklewood Workhouse aged 92 Years (from the Parish of Hingham).

I have checked the Parish registers online for Kenninghall and Hingham / Wicklewood but can't see these burials.

Was there a civil cemetery at this time or a burial ground at the Workhouse?  I'm not local so can only access online resources.

Thanks in advance for any info or suggestions,

Caroline

Hello,

is there anybody who could look at the Kenninghall Vestry Minutes for November 1851 (I live in Northumberland)? According to the online catalogue for Norfolk Records Office they are number PD 108/71.

My ancestor was Henry Duffield and he had recently moved with his family from Kenninghall to Edale, Derbyshire for work but had fallen ill and wished to return to Norfolk. (I can provide lots more background info if anybody is interested).

From the Guiltcross Unions Guardians Minutes Books I have viewed online it seems my ancestors "case" for poor relief was to be passed to the Vestry Meeting for discussion on or around 20th November 1851.

Many thanks

The Common Room / Dead on Census? 2 Months Death to Burial? 1851
« on: Wednesday 09 May 18 15:18 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm hoping somebody can help me unravel a bit of a puzzle. The outline is as follows:

15 March 1851 Hannah Duffield dies (date from death certificate)
30 March 1851 Hannah Duffield is listed with family on Census
14 May 1851 Hannah Duffield death is registered (date from death certificate)
18 May 1851 Hannah Duffield buried (from parish register transcripts, Edale, Derbyshire)

There is a small notation "2" on her death certificate by the date of death (I got the death cert from GRO online). I contacted the local register office but they said there was no more info to be gained from their records.

My gut feeling is 2 months is too long between death and burial. The burial and registration dates seem to "tally" (but could the burial transcript be incorrect?). Why is she listed on the census 15 days after her death (was the census taken that far in advance?). I haven't come across anything in the newspaper archives.

Over to you guys, can anybody throw light on the chronology here? I'm open to all theories or pointers. I'm very puzzled, but that's nothing new!

Many thanks in advance

Caroline
