Caernarvonshire / Houses buried under Penrhyn Quarry
« on: Sunday 08 March 20 08:30 GMT (UK)  »
I'm researching 5 houses that were buried under the slate tips of Penrhyn Quarry near the old hospital. I'm particularly interested in photos and information about Traws(Tros) y ffordd, Ty'n y coed, Bryn Llwyd and Mount Pleasant. There was a second Bryn Llwyd - a terrace similar to those at Caeberllan or Grisiau Cochion and it was very near the hospital.
I would also be interested in the area north of Llyn Meurig called Bryn Llys which was near Lon Goch (near Grisiau Cochion). This is near the original St Ann's church built in 1812 and was also buried.

Caernarvonshire / Myers & Herkomer
« on: Saturday 28 December 19 20:34 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know of Joseph Myers/Meirs (b. 1826) - a German immigrant who married Sophia Evans (b. 1839) of Llanllechid? They were married in Toxteth in 1860 and had two daughters who were born in Llanllechid (Bethesda): Sophia (b 1862) and Catherine (b. 1863). Joseph was a picture framer and may have had a connection to Sir Hubert von Herkomer the renowned Victorian portrait painter who painted Lord Penrhyn in 1881. Herkomer was in Bethesda in 1881 as a visitor in Henry Jones' house in Pantglas and Sophia Myers nee Evans was Henry's sister-in-law - the sister of his wife Ann Evans. I'm trying to find why Herkomer was in Pantglas with Henry and Ann Jones in 1881.

Caernarvonshire / New Lane in Bangor High St.
« on: Monday 26 August 19 11:13 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone remember this narrow alley that is today a gated passage between 'Bangor Vapes' and 'Alton Murphy' on the same side as The Castle Hotel (now 'New Look')? Any information and photos would be useful. There's nothing on the Bangor Civic Society website about it.
The only clue I have was that it had a photographic development building there in the '60s. From the Historic Town Plan of 1889 and from the 1881 to 1901 censuses New Lane had 6 properties.
Many thanks.

Does anyone know where a WWII mortar training ground was in Aber? I know where the rifle range is by the sea shore but this range was up the valley somewhere.

Caernarvonshire / Bangor explosion accident kills 3 boys March 1945
« on: Saturday 06 April 19 13:34 BST (UK)  »
Three boys were killed in Treflan, near Kyffin Square, Bangor when one of them was tampering with a 2" HE mortar found on a training range in Aber. I'd like to trace Major C L W Jones who was a witness at the coroner's inquiry and Col. Gordon Carter who represented the War Dep.
The Chronicle of March 1945 reported the sad case.
Thanks.

Does anyone have any pictures or information about the Druid in Bangor? All I know is that it's under the present car park now. My 2nd g uncle, Thomas David Edwards was the publican in 1901 with his wife Laura Templeton. Her mother, Sefralah Hughes (nee Templeton-Morris) ran the Old England in Lon Pobdy in 1891. I've no idea where this pub was situated but I know where the road is.

Thanks,
Dee

Warwickshire / John Edwards, Rugby
« on: Tuesday 24 April 18 12:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm trying to find any information about John Edwards who lived in Carlton Rd., and died possibly in the 1980' or 90s. He was from Bethesda (Rachub, Llanllechid) in Gwynedd and might have been born about 1925. He married Megan and she was from Penmaenmawr, Gwynedd. He worked as a draughtsman in Rugby.
I'd like to know when he died and where was he buried.
Many thanks,
Dee

Caernarvonshire / Meaning of tripe dealer
« on: Saturday 14 April 18 11:15 BST (UK)  »
My 3x great grandmother was recorded in the 1861 census of Glanrafon, Bangor as a 'tripe dealer'. Can anyone throw more light into this occupation? Additional information is that she was a widow, aged 79 and her husband was a shoemaker - as was her son. Another son, Evan Edwards became a butcher in the High Street. There's an obvious link with tanning and butchering but I have seen the term 'tripe dealer' before and without these links.

Caernarvonshire / Cae Gwigin - Tal-y-bont
« on: Monday 12 March 18 14:04 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know where I can get information where exactly Cae Gwigin (Caewigin) was? I know from the 1841 Census of Llanllechid it was close to Glan Bethlehem but I can't find it in the early OS maps.
Diolch,
Dee
