Australia / James Greenland on the 'Sir Charles Napier'
« on: Monday 08 January 24 04:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I'm trying to see if I can link a James Greenland that arrived in Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land on 28th Nov 1842 on the 'Sir Charles Napier' to the James Greenland (c. 1825-1895) that married Bridget McNamara in Deniliquin, NSW on 26th Jan 1863 and died there on 5th April 1895 aged 70 years.

James Greenland is mentioned in the Deniliquin Gaol Description and Entrance Books in Dec 1881 (60yo) as having arrived on the 'Sir C Napier' in 1851. But I cannot seem to find a voyage of the 'Sir Charles Napier' arriving in Australia in 1851. I have a feeling the date is wrong in this record.
If these are all the same vessel I'm not sure if there was time for an England to Australia voyage:
- In late Jan 1851 the ship arrived in Mobile from Liverpool
- In Feb 1851 the ship was off Cape Horn
- In Jun 1851 the bark left Liverpool for Quebec
- In Nov 1851 the barque seems to be on a voyage from Santiago de Cuba to Swansea starting in Sep

I could also find arrivals for a 'Sir Charles Napier' in Apr 1855 in Geelong and also Feb 1858 in Port Phillip Bay but I couldn't find a James Greenland on the passenger lists.

So I'm thinking that possibly James arrived in Australia a lot earlier than he said he did.

On the 'Immigrants under the Bounty and General System List' from Feb 1843 it lists the immigrants who arrived in 1842 on the 'Sir Charles Napier'. James Greenland from Bradford, Wiltshire is on there with his wife. A bit more investigating and I believe his wife was Ruth Wilkins. This couple appears to have married on 11th Jul 1842 in Bradford-on-Avon shortly before the ship left London at the end of July for Hobart.

However a few things are making me doubt this could be the correct James Greenland:
- discrepancy in arrival dates 1842 vs. 1851
- The 1842 marriage certificate lists James' father as William Greenland, while the 1895 death certificate lists the father as James Greenland (his wife Bridget was the informant)
- The 1895 death certificate states that he was from Bristol with unknown years in the colony. Bristol and Bradford-on-Avon are fairly close though.
- The 1895 death certificate lists no other children/marriages before Bridget

According to the 1842 marriage certificate to Ruth Wilkins he would have been born around 1822, which does seem to make him roughly the right age.
No age, birthplace or parents are listed on the 1863 marriage certificate to Bridget McNamara.
His parents are listed as James Greenland and Jane Rochard on his 1895 death certificate (his wife Bridget was the informant).
I'm waiting on James and Bridget's children's birth certificates to see if they offer any further clues.

I cannot find what happened to James and Ruth Greenland after the birth of a still born daughter in Aug 1844 in Hobart. I haven't been able to find deaths for either in Tasmania, Victoria or NSW yet.
There is a James Greenland that left for Port Philip in Jul 1846 aboard the 'David' which might be him. Perhaps Ruth died in-between that time and he made his way to Deniliquin, or he might have left her and she might have remarried (James and Bridget were separated for a time in their marriage).

A slight complicating factor in the search is there is another convict James Greenland that arrived in Hobart on the 'Moffatt' in 1842 who seems to have ended up in the Liverpool Asylum for the Infirm and Destitute in in NSW by 1859.

If anyone could please help me find out what happened to James and Ruth Greenland, it would be great to rule them out as an option. But then I need to find another James Greenland on a ship called 'Sir Charles Napier'.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Glamorganshire / Gwenllian Jenkins of Llansannor, Glamorgan
« on: Thursday 21 September 23 15:33 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm seeing if I can break a brick wall I have in Glamorgan, Wales with Gwenllian Jenkins.
I'm wondering if anyone is familiar with the Jenkins family of Llansannor that might be able to link Gwenllian?

~~~~~~~~-------------------------------
She was born around 1801 in Llansannor, Glamorgan.
10 Aug 1822 she married an Irish tinplate worker named Michael Donague in Cowbridge, Wales. No mention of parents on the certificate. She is listed as being 'of this parish'. Witnesses were William Howe and Anne Howe of Cowbridge.
The couple had the follow children: John (1823), James (1824), Catherine (1828), William (1830), Marianne (1832), Jane (1835), Michael (1835), Elizabeth (1837), Ellinor (1839), Charlotte (1840) and Thomas (1844) all around the Cowbridge area.
1841 Wales Census for Cowbridge is missing I believe.
1851 Wales Census she is living with her husband Michael and their children Elizabeth, Ellen, Charlotte and Thomas. Her birthplace is listed as Llansannor, Glamorgan
In Dec 1853 the family travelled to New York City aboard the 'Eagle' with her husband Michael and their children Jane, Ellen, Charlotte & Thomas (not exactly sure how long they were there)
1861 England Census she is living at No. 2 Edwy Parade, Kingsholm, Gloucestershire with her husband Michael and son Thomas. Her birthplace is listed as Llansannor, Glamorganshire
1871 England Census - haven't found her whereabouts yet
8 Dec 1878 she died in Kingsholm Square, Kingsholm, Gloucestershire. No mention of parents on the death certificate.
~~~~~~~~-------------------------------

I have found one Gwenllian Jenkins baptised in 1833 in Llansannor and her mother also named Gwenllian Jenkins that might be connected somehow...

Father's Name   Richard Thomas
Mother's Name   Gwenllian Jenkins
Event Type   Christening
Event Date   4 Sep 1833

If anyone can help me trace this family further back in Wales would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Lee

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Donague Family on the 'Eagle' 1853
« on: Thursday 21 September 23 06:09 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Looking for some help on where to find out more about the 'Eagle', a 468 tonne barque from the Perrin, Freestone & Co's American line of packets. According to the immigration record on 31st Dec 1853 from the New York, U.S., Arriving Passenger and Crew Lists 1820-1957, the master was a Thomas Quance. I can't seem to find the shipping reports for this vessel leaving Bristol or arriving in New York around this time. I've also checked Glasgow as the potential departure port as I know the port of departure listed on these passenger lists is not always the original port and Ancestry.com lists Glasgow. Bristol makes sense as a port since the Donague family was travelling from Glamorgan, Wales. I have found one small note in the The Bristol Mirror 21 Jan 1854 under Ship News that says "at New York, the Eagle, Quance" arrived.

Where else can I look for information on this voyage and the family's immigration records?
I'm curious about this trip because most of the family ended up back in England shortly after.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm interested in this immigration because it looks like Michael & Gwenllian Donague with their younger children Jane, Ellen, Charlotte & Thomas went to New York in 1853. Michael and Gwenllian as well as at least Ellen and Thomas were back in England for the 1861 Census.

- Jane emigrated to Melbourne, Victoria in 1865 from Liverpool so she must have went back to England at some point.

- Ellen went back to England but eventually ended up marrying George Wentz in New York in 1894. And lived with her sister Charlotte before her death there in 1902.

- Charlotte married to Malachi Byrnes in New Jersey in Oct 1870, but I haven't been able to locate her in the England census or the USA censuses in-between yet so not sure if she stayed in the USA or went back to England. The 1900 US Census lists her immigration year as 1878 but the 1910 US Census lists her immigration year as 1858, so it’s a bit contradictory at the moment, still looking.

I've also lost Gwenllian Donague in the 1871 England Census, she should be in theory in Kingsholm, Gloucestershire on Kingsholm Square/Edwy Parade, the family had houses there in the 1861 Census and she died there in Dec 1878, but the houses are occupied by someone else in 1871. I'm currently working on the theory that she might have went to US with her daughter Charlotte in 1870 and stayed for a little while, I haven't found her yet though.

I haven't found any of their return trips (US->UK or back to UK->US) yet so any help locating those would be much appreciated:
Michael & Gwenllian Donague and their children Jane, Ellen, Charlotte & Thomas

Thanks in advance for any help!

Europe / Divorce in Stettin, Prussia in 1840s (Gamp-Goltz-Krüger)
« on: Thursday 07 September 23 07:33 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I found a record of marriage of Johanne Catharine Maria Krüger to her second husband Johann Daniel Gamp in Nov 1843 in the Schlosskirche records in Stettin. If I'm reading this correctly it looks like she obtained a divorce from her first husband Johann Friedrich Goltz in 1843.

Would there be any records of this divorce available?

The image has a watermark/copyright on it so I've transcribed the relevant parts to the best of ability:

"Johanne Catharine Maria Goltz geborn. Krüger rechtskräftig geschieden von dem Arbeitsmann Johann Friedrich Goltz"

"geschieden board Erkenntniß vom. 5 Juli 1842 Attest der Rechts traft vom. 21 März 1843 zwar unbedingt"

Thanks
Lee

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to trace a William Collins’ movement once he arrived in Sydney, NSW in Jan 1842 on the ‘William Sharples’ as a Bounty Immigrant from Galway. On the passenger list it states he was a farm servant/agricultural labourer sent to Canterbury by his employer. Unfortunately, there is ink bleeding that obscures most of the name of his employer. I’m wondering if someone has any insight into any way to find this Mr Charles ___?___ from Sydney with a connection to Canterbury.
“Plan of 95 allotments at Canterbury” has names that might work like Miller, McNeil and Neal but haven’t been able to make the match. The village of Canterbury was subdivided in 1841 so his employer could have had an early allotment or maybe some connection to the Australian Sugar Company in the area.
William was brought out to Australia by the Aspinall, Browne & Company, maybe they have records somewhere?
William made his way to Mount Barker in South Australia where he married in April 1849 to Harriet Holmes. Their marriage certificate does not list any occupation or link to NSW.
And because he died separated from his family at the Immigrant House in Melbourne, there is no information listed about his time in the colonies on his death certificate.
I’ve played around with contrast but can’t get it much clearer. But maybe someone has a better way to clear up the image?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Angus (Forfarshire) / Handwriting Help - Monikie Marriage - James Dick & Jean Lovell
« on: Saturday 25 September 21 13:39 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm hoping someone can help me read the parish/location written after James Dick's name on his 1695 marriage record to Jean Lovell?

Jean Lovell appears to be from Monikie and possibly the daughter of James Lovell.

After their marriage the couple seems to have stayed in the Parish of Monikie and ended up living at Fairniefaulds according to the baptism records of their last two children Barbara 1709 and Andrew 1711.

Possible children:

Elizabeth 1698
James 1699
Jean 1701
John 1702
Robert 1703
John 1707
Barbara 1709
Andrew 1711

Thanks so much in advance for any help!

Cheers

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Peter Spence - Aberdeenshire, Scotland
« on: Tuesday 20 October 20 15:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some help reading some place names in Aberdeenshire, Scotland associated with the Spence family around the 1690s.

Firstly, I have a marriage record of John Spence and Janet Wilson that I have transcribed as:
John Spence in Kin___ mount & Janet Wilsone in Kinore gave up their bands to be proclaimed and consigned their pledges.

Secondly, I have baptism record for their son Peter that I have transcribed as:
John Spence in _____ and Janet Wilsone his spouse had a kid baptised his name Petter.
Witness: Patt Robertson + Patt Wilson

Both of these records are from the the parish of Huntly on ScotlandsPeople but this didn't exist until Dumbennan and Kinnoir parishes were united in 1727 - so I'm guessing these locations can be narrowed down to the vicinity of the parish of Kinnoir. I can't seen to find anything that fits so far on the ScotlandsPlaces, OS Maps or in the List Of Pollable Persons Within The Shire Of Aberdeen. Any other suggestions of places to try?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Banffshire / Banffshire (Rathven Parish) Baptism - Anna Bennet
« on: Sunday 03 November 19 06:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

Hoping I can please get some help decipher the placename on the attached baptism record for Anna Bennet on 11th Aug 1746 in Rathven.

My transcription:

Anna, daur to John Bennet & Anna Clark in ?Bleocockmuir? was baptised, witness James Cuy in Wakerdales (Walkerdales) &c

I have a marriage record of John Bennet and Anna Clark in 1735 Wakerdales (Walkerdales) so I'm guess the place is somewhere close to there near Rathven, Banffshire. I however can't find the baptism records of Anna's known siblings James Bennet (1741-1824 - father of James Gordon Bennett, publisher of the New York Herald) and Margaret Bennett (1754-1856, married John Chapman of Ryeriggs) in the either OPR or the Catholic records, the Bennetts were a Roman Catholic family.

I'm also curious about the cross symbol on the right hand side - is it a symbol of a Catholic baptism? Or that she died shortly after the baptism?

Any help would be appreciated!
