United States of America / What happened to William Baxter?
« on: Sunday 02 December 18 11:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

Yesterday I visited my great-aunt who told me her dad had a younger brother who 'went to America and no one knows what happened to him'. So I thought I would see if I can find something. Here's what I do know:

William Baxter was born in Dundee, Scotland in 1903 to David Baxter and Margaret McLeod (m.s. Thomson). He emigrated to New York in 1926, sailing from Glasgow on 6th November.

He married Mary Collins (m.s. Low, born 1905 in Dundee, Scotland) in 1928. Mary had a son, Douglas Archibald Collins b.1927 from her first marriage to Harry Collins. Mary arrived in New York in 1923, along with her mother, step-father and siblings.

On the 1930 Census, William, Mary and Douglas are living in Bloomfield, Essex, New Jersey. Next door were her mother, step-father and family.

On the 1940 Census, Mary is living with her mother and step-father, along with her son Douglas and daughter, Betty Baxter (aged 7). Her marital status is 'Divorced'.

She applied for naturalization in 1941. Her application states that her husband's name is William, he is not naturalized, and his residence is unknown. It also says she has another daughter, Wilma Baxter, born in 1933.

So William and Mary would have separated at some point between 1933 and 1940. I cannot find William on the 1940 Census and I cannot find a record of his death. I also cannot find any military records or outgoing passenger lists that might match William. He doesn't seem to have applied for naturalization.

So can anyone help me find out what happened to William? I would like to be able to tell my aunt who is the last surviving member of the family.

Thanks in advance.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Date of this Army photo? (Scotland)
« on: Monday 22 October 18 21:43 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Can anyone estimate the date of this old army photo please? I think it is of either my great-grandfather (1897-1968) or his father (1871-1898) -bottom row, second from the left. They looked really alike so I cannot tell and a date would help a lot. I thought someone might be able to tell the date from the uniforms or the guns?

Thanks for looking!

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / James Casey - Date & Restoration
« on: Saturday 20 October 18 23:26 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am fairly sure this is a picture of my Great-Grandfather James Casey, but would be grateful if someone might be able to give an approximate date? James Casey was born in 1883 and died in 1938.

I know it is terrible quality, and I am not expecting much but would be grateful if someone could have a go at cleaning up the picture a bit.

Many thanks in advance.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Helen McLeod? Help with date
« on: Saturday 20 October 18 23:16 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me with a possible date for this photo please?

I think it could be a picture of my grandfather's sisters. The younger sister was born in January 1936 and I am guessing the girl in the picture is around 3 so I am thinking (hoping) the picture is from 1939 but I wonder if someone could confirm?

I hope it is her as I have no other pictures of her. She died in November 1940 from Diphtheria. She has a ball in her hands which has a picture of a man and a woman on it but I am not sure who they are. Royals maybe?

Thanks for looking.

Offaly (Kings) / Margaret McGlynn (c1870s-1890s?)
« on: Saturday 18 August 18 14:16 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I was hoping someone can help me find some records for a Margaret McGlynn. She was the first wife of Andrew Gonoude who was born 15/03/1870 in Tullamore to William and Catherine Gonoude (ms Ryan).

Margaret and Andrew had at least three children:

Mary Kate Gonoude b. 17/05/1891 d. 05/07/1892
William Gonoude b. 19/10/1892 d. unknown
Mary Ellen Gonoude b. 14/05/1895 d. 13/09/1983

Andrew remarried in Scotland in 1902 and his marital status is recorded as a widower. So Margaret must have died some time between 1895-1902. I actually think it was 1901 or earlier though, as Mary Ellen is on the 1901 Scotland Census living with Andrew's two sisters. However I cannot find a record of her death. Nor can I find the record of her and Andrew's marriage, or her birth.

Can anyone help please?

Scotland / Andrew Gonoude 1901 and 1911 Census
« on: Monday 23 July 18 19:58 BST (UK)  »
Good evening,

I am wondering if anyone can help me find someone on the 1901 and 1911 Census.

Andrew "Gunoode" was born 15/03/1870 in Tullamore, King's Co, Ireland to William "Gunoode" and Catherine Ryan.
He had at least one brother and two sisters (John b. 1876, Mary b. 1872 and Catherine b. 1878)

He married Margaret McGlynn sometime before 1891 (cannot find the marriage on Roots Ireland). They had at least two children: Mary Kate (b. 1891 and d. 1892) and Mary Ellen (b. 1895). Margaret then died. I am not sure when but it would have been before 1902 because in 1902 Andrew Gonoude (widower) married Ann Kelly in Dundee, Scotland.

Ann Kelly died in 1905 and Andrew married Elizabeth Russell McNamara (widow) in Buckhaven, Fife in 1906. Andrew died in Dunfermline in 1924.

So I am fairly certain he was in Scotland in 1911 and yet I cannot find him on the Census for that year. I know he was in Scotland in June 1901 because he was a witness at his brother John's wedding. However I cannot find John on the 1901 Census either, so maybe they arrived in Scotland after it was taken.I cannot find either of them on the 1901 Ireland Census though.

The two sisters Mary and Catherine and Andrew's daughter Mary Ellen are on the 1901 Census in Dundee, Scotland.

I have found John on the 1911 Census, in Inverkeithing with his wife Bridget and daughter Nora/Dora. Mary married Michael McCarthy in Dundee in 1902 and they were living in Buckhaven in 1911. Andrew's daughter Mary Ellen was still living with them. Catherine married John Kelly in Dundee in 1902 and they were still living in Dundee in 1911.

So can anyone help me find Andrew and his wife Elizabeth in 1911? And maybe Andrew and John in 1901? At first I thought I was just struggling to find them because I was mis-spelling the surname (I have seen lots of different verisons: Gonoud, Gonood, Gonoude, Gonoode, Gunoode, Genood etc) but I have tried every spelling I can think of and cannot find what I am looking for.

Thanks in advance.

Lanarkshire / Who was Mrs McKenna of 63 Neptune Street, Govan?
« on: Monday 12 March 18 22:52 GMT (UK)  »
Evening all,

In September 1938 my great-grandfather James Casey was struck by a train at Ibrox station and died. He had apparently been visiting a sick relative. I have found a newspaper article about his death and it says "A married daughter, Mrs McKenna of 63 Neptune Street, Govan, accompanied him to the station".

As far as I know, James Casey only had two daughters of  marrying age at that time. Susannah, born 1904, married a man called William Keenan and Catherine, born 1907, married a man called Archibald Shanks. No McKennas that I have come across. So I am wondering, how can I find out who Mrs McKenna was? I was hoping to find a first name and or maybe her husband's name.  I first thought of the valuation rolls but the most recent year available seems to be 1935. Is there anywhere else I can look?

Many thanks.

P.S. Articled attached for anyone interested.

Angus (Forfarshire) / Alexander McLeod b.10/05/1871 Dundee - Death?
« on: Saturday 10 March 18 17:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am trying to find the death record for my ancestor Alexander McLeod:

Born in Dundee on 10th May 1871 to Daniel McLeod and Alison Grubb.
Married Margaret Thomson on 12th February 1892 in Dundee.
His son Daniel McLeod was born in Dundee on 7th May 1897. Alexander registered the birth on 19th May 1897.
On 6th October 1899 Margaret Thomson McLeod, his widow, remarried in Dundee.

So Alexander died sometime between 19th May 1897 and 6th October 1899, but I cannot find the record of his death. I have searched Scotland's People. Definitely nothing in Dundee but cannot find any records that match anywhere else in Scotland either. I have searched Ancestry in case he moved away before he died but haven't found anything.

I was wondering if anyone might have any ideas or be able to help?

Also, I was wondering if widows had to prove their marital status before remarrying? Would Margaret have been able to lie? Maybe Alexander left the family and I am making my search criteria too narrow?

Thanks.
