Looking at this in trepidation, I have a gt gt grandfather an Alexander MacLeod from Stornoway born around 1820s - the very thought of trying to follow that line gives me the gibbers.  I have other Lewis forebearers from Leurbost, but I knew which croft, so that made it hugely easier.  The problem is that his daughter (my Gr grandmother) showing as Dandina MacLeod (Also recorded elsewhere as Ena and Dina), marrying James Matheson of Ullapool, got married in London, so I currently don't have her mum's name (Alexander's wife). It has dawned on me that I might/should get Dandina's maiden surname on her death cert - but am at a dead end till I next go to Registrar House - since I'm too mean to pay the price on Scotland's People !

Hello,  I am trying to find details of the marriage of James Matheson and Dandina MacLeod on 3 July 1884 at Kensington.  All the rest of the family are in Scotland, and really struggling with the English system !

Inverness / Orphanage In Inverness 1920s - 1930s ?
« on: Tuesday 13 March 18 10:45 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know name of orphanage in Inverness during 1920s and whether and where records might be available ?  I know that my mum and uncle were put in there by family due to family circumstances, but returned to family two years later.

Many thanks.

Family History Beginners Board / Going Digital - How Do I ?
« on: Tuesday 13 March 18 01:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hello All, I am and I am not a beginner.  I have a fair amount of paper based research done in the 1970s and 1980s which I am resurrecting and dragging into the 21st Century.

What is the best way to do this.  My families are mainly Scottish, but with links to Burma, Jamaica, USA and Australia in the days of the British Empire, with branches still in these countries.  Would this impact on my choice of which website to use - Ancestry or another ?  For recording my own tree would I be better to use a stand alone ?  Two people have mentioned Family Tree Maker - is this current, or was it popular a while ago and people still use it ?

Really appreciate some help here !
