Armed Forces / 17th Lancers
« on: Wednesday 29 March 06 17:05 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace my great great grandfather who served in the 17th Lancers in the mid 19th century.  We have a photo of him in India - he was a clarinet player.

I am finding it difficult to get hold of any information - the only thing I have found out is that I need to go to London and physically look up the info myself.  This is just not possible for me - does anyone know of any other way of finding out more?

His name was William Shaw-Webberley (or may have just been William Shaw at that time) and he was born in 1838/1939 in Derbyshire.

I am really just looking for confirmation that he served in the regiment and also if he died in service.

Any pointers in the right direction gratefully received.

Derbyshire / Derby Records Office
« on: Tuesday 28 March 06 19:55 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace my family and have discovered that they are from the Derbyshire area (Longford and Doveridge specifically).  I am finding it difficult to find all the info I need on the net so wondered if it is possible/worth going to Derby/Ashbourne record office.

Sorry for sounding a bit stupid but can you go to these places to browse records?  Do you have to pay?  Would I be able to see parish records there too?  ???

I live in Worcester so it is a bit of a trek for me so i want to make sure it has the potential to be useful!

I am trying to trace my great grandfather who we believe was in the 17th Lancers in mid 19th Century.  Can anyone tell me where I can find out whether he was or not?  I have contacted the Lancers who say they are unable to help with individual requests.  Are there any online registers?

Derbyshire / birth details - William Shaw
« on: Thursday 23 March 06 18:28 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to find out a bit more birth registration info without actually sending off for a certificate?  I am not entirely sure I have got the right person and do not want the expense of a certificate to find out it is the wrong one!

The person I am trying to find out more about is William Shaw born Jul-Aug 1838 registered in Ashbourne.  Vol 19 page 317.  Specifically would like to know parents names.

Any help gratefully received.

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Webley/Shaw in Dovedale Lookup Please
« on: Saturday 18 March 06 11:49 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help me trace my great grandfather?  There is a bit of a mystery surrounding him as we know that he married in 1905 and his name was William Webley and his father was also listed as William Webley.

However we believe that he was born 1872/1873 in Dovedale but there is a chance his name at birth was William (or Thomas William) Shaw.  I am therefore trying to track down his date of birth and any details of his parents.

Thanks.

Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / Foode in Middleton
« on: Friday 17 February 06 13:00 GMT (UK)  »
I would be really grateful for any lookups on Foodes in Middleton, Northants.

I have gone back as far as 1851 where my great great great grandmother Elizabeth is listed as Elizabeth Toodle with children Madeline and Bishop - this is a transcription error - it should be Foode.  She is listed as a widow and I have found who I think was her husband listed on the death register as Welby Foode who died in 1848.  I would be really grateful for any further information about this Welby.

Thank you in advance.
